Chopped greens and a lovely lime
With this, we have my introduction to Ormonde Jayne's fragrances. I've smelled a few of her Montabacos on test strips but ended up attracted most to the scent of Vetiveria. The eye-catching bright green bottle certainly helped. This review is based off of a 2ml sample.

I'm still unaware of what vetiver itself smells like, so I can't comment on how appropriately this fragrance is named. From the start, a vegetal blast of chopped zucchini greets me. Lime initially teases me and I want more of it. This green scent lasts the entirety of our journey but subsides with a growing grassy note, which I assume is the vetiver. Then the lime kicks it up a notch and is more present hereafter. This is an extremely pleasant and mature combination.

My biggest complaint here is the overall performance. I would have loved more time but have caught myself needing to sniff closely and, ultimately, respraying, after just four hours.

I enjoyed the experience very much but unfortunately a full bottle is not for me. Very relaxing but too pricey for its performance. This does, however, have me anticipating trying more from this house.

A cooling vetiver
Initial spray of Vetiveria immediately reminded me of a less fruity version of Elysium Eau Intense (which I'm not impressed by). I was wrong. It does have that slightly cooling effect that the juniper gives Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée and a similar spiciness as you would find in London Spice. Also green and fresh. The vetiver is a green grassy and woody smell but not overly vetivery like one would find in Sultan Vetiver ...... somewhere in the middle of that and Vetiver Sensuel. This dries down to a very reminiscent Voyage d'Hermès Parfum . Perfect for spring! Glad to see this from Ormonde Jayne!

Bright and uplifting composition
I have been looking for a mild vetiver scent - I have Guerlain's Vetiver Parfum but it can be quite harsh, although the performance is outstanding. Someone recommended that I try Vetiveria - I ordered a 2 ml decant and the composition had me at first sniff.

Initially you are hit with citrusy/flowery scent which is quite effervescent there is no vetiver. The lack of vetiver is the opening notes is not a deterrent but on the contrary - the opening resembles youthfulness and freshness. As the scent starts to settle down and "mature" as it transitions and gentle slightly mossy vetiver bubbles up to the top. It is a beautiful transition and has a calming uplifting overall effect.

The longevity is good, projections is good but nothing spectacular, quickly after 2 hours it becomes 1-2 inch scent. Vetiveria is (while I hate this word) a true dumb reach summer daily scent.

Fizzy limeade atop vetiver based fougere
The opening of Vetiveria is nice but also a bit bothersome, with the juniper berry and lime providing a kind of fizzy limeade sort of reminiscent of Sedley, but also a hint of citrus-based cleaning product is there, perhaps due to the orange blossom note. The namesake vetiver is not very punchy, but kind of hides in the base of a fougere-y accord that dominates the rest of this fragrance. I actually find the drydown quite similar to Dior Homme (2020) Eau de Toilette. Not a huge performer but is a unique combination of accords that someone might find suits them.

A classic theme rethought only to a limited extent
Vetiveria is once again a perfume that piqued my curiosity with its scent notes, and with the brand Ormonde Jayne, I expected above all a modern, airy-transparent creation of the already so diversely interpreted theme of vetiver. The brand has succeeded to some extent, but it also relied on very classic accords, as both light chypre and fougère elements can be filtered out.

I really like the opening, as it comes across as very diverse, aromatic-green-spicy, and is also characterized by a rather mild, fruity lime, accompanied by a very subtle sweetness of coumarin. I can't say from personal experience how Nepali Szechuan pepper (Timut Pepper) smells exactly, but I find Linda Jayne Pilkington's description of it as fruity, airy, and zesty to be understandable. In this respect, the fragrance does have a certain freshness - I would have expected even more citrusy acidity here. The floral heart notes serve more to give the fragrance fullness and yet a bright lightness, rather than being truly accentuated.

When perfumes come across as too smooth, I am less drawn to them, which is why I also appreciate that Vetiveria has a bit of roughness from the very beginning. The reason for this is that not only grassy, slightly woody vetiver is the center of attention, but - in my perception - equally (oak) moss. This gives the fragrance a very classic-masculine facet and reminds me somewhat of men's fragrances from the 80s or early 90s. However, Vetiveria is overall slimmer and becomes softer and gentler over time.

The projection is initially slightly above average, but it noticeably loses intensity after one to two hours, and over time the fragrance is rather close to the skin, yet still relatively long-lasting. For a workday, it should certainly suffice (I tested it on three occasions), and overall I find Vetiveria to be best suited for daytime, work, and leisure, and for more mature men or younger ones who prefer more classic scents. Unfortunately, this Ormonde Jayne loses too much tension for me personally when the top notes fade and becomes a bit too mossy.

Freshly cut grass, cooling juniper, a tangy lime.
Metallic spiciness on a herbal, soapy backdrop.
Earthy, woody base and hay-like sweetness.

Vintage cola-chypre opening transitions into smooth, creamy, masculine white florals and vetiver in lime marinade. Lightly sweet and zingy.

Dirty green, almost resinous, evergreen opening. Dry down becomes peppery bright and almost effervescent. Great scent, awesome drydown.

Fougere-like with zesty lime and pepper + herbs. A bit metallic. The vetiver’s medicinal instead of rooty. Not for me.

Opens up citrusy, flowery uplifting. As it dries down it transitions to beautiful mild vetiver smell

Elegant vetiver with citrus-aromatic opening, but lacks novelty. A refined yet ordinary take, overpriced for its performance.

It's amazing that so many notes are needed to create a relatively simple-looking fresh vetiver scent.

A beautiful combination of lime and juniper berry, very refreshing in the opening. As it develops, it's very green with earthy notes.
