(K)no Fool
When you ask a deck of cards - for whatever (oracle or just entertainment) purpose - a so-called tarot deck is usually used, consisting of 78 cards. Of these 78 cards, 56 are the Minor Arcana and 22 are the Major Arcana - 'Arcanum' is Latin and simply means: 'secret'. The Minor Arcana corresponds to a 'normal' deck of cards, i.e. consists of the four 'suits' of Wands, Swords, Coins, and Cups (which symbolize the four elements), each ascending from Ace to King. The Major Arcana, on the other hand - also referred to as trump cards - tells the journey of a hero. (Dolce & Gabbana have dedicated several fragrances to the Major Arcana, all of which I know to be rather uninspiring.)
This hero - and at the same time the first card of the Major Arcana - is the Fool. In the most popular tarot deck today, the so-called 'Rider Waite Tarot' - created at the beginning of the 20th century in Great Britain - the card shows the Fool as a young man in a floral jacket standing on a rock, the rising sun behind him and a jumping puppy beside him. The Fool symbolizes the archetype of the child - untainted innocence and the beginning of everything. Over the course of the following 21 cards, he will embark on a journey, meet companions and dangers, and face trials, ultimately finding completion in card number 21 (the Fool himself carries the value of 0, and only the second card - the Magician - carries 1, hence the 21) for what he begins here.
A child, untainted innocence, and the beginning of everything - yes, that fits Les Couvent des Minimes' Eau des Mâtines. It is herb-fresh, carefree, and lighthearted - and makes no demands on its wearer - it only offers itself and its deliciously sweet morning freshness. Whether one can discern pear or apple, one might or might not - its notes fade away quite soon anyway - but in the short time until that moment, it entertains lightly and kindly. And after all, we know that the Fool always marks just the beginning of a long journey - and serves as a reminder to be wise and cautious on his path from the Magician and the High Priestess to the Wheel of Fortune, to the Sun and Star - out into the world.
Conclusion: not a huge fragrance, perhaps not even a medium-sized one. However, a friendly companion for a morning when one seeks only a brief refreshment - and not a complex scent that wants to bloom all day long and becomes bothersome if you don't let it. A Fool, it may be - but certainly not an idiot.
