Dead Old Lady

That's what my husband called it when he smelled it. To be precise he said, "Phew! Old lady, almost dead--inches from the grave!" Impolite, if you ask me, but accurate nonetheless. Naturally, I forgive the designer who made Haute Luxe (aka Roja), unsurpassed to date in my personal experience of perfume.

Bit disappointed

I am not keen on this version of gardenia. Its nothing spectacular, just like any other white floral scent. It is extremely difficult to imitate the real gardenia scent from nature. Sadly Roja has failed in this version. To me, personally i don't think any gardenia perfume out there can beat vintage Tuvache Jungle Gardenia. Second best would be vintage quadruple gardenia by Richard Hudnut, followed by vintage gardenia by Lucien Lelong, then again vintage gardenia by Houbigant and lastly velvet gardenia by Tom Ford. I am a big fan of Roja Dove but this one definitely failed to impress my senses. Sorry Roja!

This one seems to suffer on my skin from the same problem of another in this extrait line, lilac. Both start with intense aromas and go to discreet scents very soon. This is more a jasmine and tuberose composition, it lacks the odd notes in gardenia reproductions. It smells fruity, sirupy and rich at first, then it gets a little bit tart with a rose apparation that last some minutes. Then it ends in a very close to skin musky and woody base, which is a disappointment in such an expensive and exquisite fragrance. Honestly, it's the roja dove that i liked the least so far.

I wish it were different…

…… and I could say: Phew, the scent leaves me completely indifferent and awakens no desires. But no, my madness of purchasing a sample for 24 euros (!) will not be forgiven so easily.
The opening is overwhelming: It smells floral, spicy, citrusy, bitter, and sweet all at once. WOW!! It clears my nose all the way to the farthest corner of my sense organ. After a short time, “Gardenia” becomes increasingly floral and lush. How does the fragrance manage to be lush but not cloying, overwhelming but not intrusive, filling the room but not suffocating? I can’t identify any individual components apart from something resinous-herbaceous and something spicy (clove? cinnamon? star anise?). It is a perfect floral wonder! It may sound silly, but “Gardenia” is not white for me; it is orange-amber and radiant. And yes, it is a perfectly formed, fully bloomed gardenia at the peak of its beauty and fragrance!
So, what do I do now? Unfortunately, I didn’t know that Rojas are so incredibly expensive! This morning, I already scrutinized my collection with a stern look and mentally calculated the financing of various perfumes for the distant future. Let’s see, maybe I’ll get lucky and by then my taste in fragrances will completely change. In the meantime, I have decided to save the sample until my husband’s upcoming milestone birthday, where “Gardenia” will get the grand appearance it deserves!

My Meadow

The lake lies still as I stroll through the still morning-wet grass with bare feet. The dew clings to my skin and makes me smile briefly again and again. The slowly rising sun finds its strength, yet it is still cool. Distantly, birds sing. They greet the new day. The scent of bright flowers rises to my nose and mingles with the feeling of untouched beauty. I sit down in the grass and become one with the awakening world.

Gardenia Extrait starts, like almost every Roja, with a roar of accords. However, these calm down very quickly and open up a citrus-green soundscape that increasingly merges with the skin over time. The underlying green bitterness of the opening quickly makes way and gives space to white, calm floral accords. It is simultaneously a feeling of tranquility and skillfully staged clarity. Almost purity. The green remains in the background as the fragrance develops, and Gardenia creates the impression of sitting in a meadow full of blooming scented flowers. It never overwhelms. It is not a Flowerbomb. It feels extremely natural and allows me to experience a sunrise over the meadow with every wear. My happy place. Where the sun gently kisses the blossoms and, with its warmth, sends the world into a beautiful day.
