Not as bad as the ratings suggest, but still very very boring
People are reacting to this as if it's a huge departure from Elysium pour Homme Eau de Parfum or Elysium pour Homme Parfum, as if those were revolutionary fragrances and Noir is strictly derivative. All of the Elysiums are basic blue fragrances chock full of ambroxan (just because it's called "ambergris" in the notes doesn't make it any more natural). Elysium Parfum is an improvement upon the blue genre but I wouldn't say it's worth the money. Elysium PC and Elysium Eau Intense are both on par with the higher end blue designer frags, i.e. 7 Cobalt or Bleu de Chanel Eau de Parfum. With all this I'm trying to say that if you rated Elysium PC a 9 and you're rating this a 2, you might have on your rose-tinted glasses.

I get that people are tired of this genre, and believe me, I am too, but it still annoys me that this is rated lower than Isola Verde. Elysium Noir may be basic, but it's at least well-composed. It is not the worst Roja release of this year. I guess my rating is only going to further lower it.

Anyways, let me describe the actual fragrance. It's a slightly ambery shower gel in the vein of Y Eau de Parfum but there is some depth here unlike some other releases in this genre this year (*cough* Valero *cough*). I get a kind of Megamare-ish dry spiciness somewhere in there, almost hinting at cumin, but there is no blackberry note which would have been a welcome addition. So, a very boring idea but not executed horribly.

Longevity is acceptable while sillage is quiet. I'd say it's a good office/gym scent but there are probably better options for 1/3 the price.

The lies we tell ourselves
Occasionally, bad fragrances are just that: bad. More often than not, there's a bit more to the story. You see, perfumery is a credentials business, yet in most cases, it doesn't even matter if you actually have them, you just need the public to be under the impression that you do. This is the story that followed Roja Dove for years (if not decades): the idea that he was just a marketing pleb from Guerlain, yet ultimately, it doesn't even matter if Dove himself is the perfumer or not since Roja Parfums as a brand boasts an elite catalogue of market-leading products within various different genres. The product spoke (and still does) for itself with Dove receiving positive reputational windfalls.

With Dove looking to sail off into the sunset, the brand was given a difficult task: to find someone who can tell the story just as well as Dove, regardless of whether they had a helping hand or not. And so they turned to French flavors house Argeville where we find waterboy Antoine Cotton. After releasing a couple flops earlier in 2025, Elysium Noir will likely end up being the final creation for Cotton with the brand looking to pivot to a different creative nose in 2026. And on behalf of the fans of British luxury niche house Roja Parfums, I say good riddance.

You see, Cotton didn't have any verifiable credentials as a perfumer to begin with. When Omani brand Amouage opted to bring in Alexis Grugeon back in 2023, he already had more than a dozen designer products under his name, some more generic than others. Maybe that lack of experience is in-part to blame for Cotton's complete ineptitude. The original Elysium pour Homme Parfum is certainly among the top 5 well-regarded citrus-aromatic fragrance in the niche market today (I'd argue it's number 1, but that's a different story for a different day). This 50ml PPH version already had 2 flankers prior to the release of Elysium Noir and both of those fragrances stayed sufficiently close to original, yet for some reason, Cotton thought that was not the right lane.

Execution wise, Elysium Noir is the Roja that smells the least like Roja and that's largely because the scent basically smells like a designer fragrance. Elysium Noir opens in the fresh, macho masculine shower gel genre. There's essentially *zero* of Elysium's citrusy DNA shown with Noir's scent profile being dominated by ambroxan and lavender/geranium in the top. On-skin there is a prominent smell of musk and there are some touches of soapy white florals. As the scent develops, that same musk is opposed by what I assume are juniper berry and cypress in the heart/base. Performance is objectively light, I'm rating sillage 3/10 with implied longevity around 5 hours, likely biased downwards.

Some might think the heart of this review is the build-up to the product coverage, but alas, it is not. You see, on the German version of Parfumo there is the aptly titled review (and I'm quoting verbatim): "5.1 is bullshit". The reviewer is referring to the average rating this fragrance held at the time of review which has since trended upwards to 5.4/10 (n=148) as of the 3rd of November 2025. As a niche hobbyist, I find that take amusing, because 5.4 is effectively a compliment for the generic product launched by the brand with Cotton at the helm. With review after review comparing Elysium Noir to generic designer products like Y Eau de Parfum, Versace pour Homme Dylan Blue Eau de Toilette and Invictus Eau de Toilette, it shouldn't be a surprise why fans of Roja don't want to be quoted €350/100ml to smell like the basic bro who thinks the aforementioned designers are worthy of their inflated ratings & coverage. There's a reason why they say the best ability is availability: a reduction in choice leads people to feel more fulfilled with their decisions. And given the type of choice I both have myself and have explored, it goes without saying that Elysium Noir is a slap in the face of Roja's fans.

Antoine Cotton, you are FIRED effective immediately.

Save your money
Synthetic and designer have never been a pair of words in my mind while smelling a Roja scent but they’re the only two that come to mind when I smell Elysium Noir. Smells like Y edp, green and dark body wash. Simple, linear, synthetically fresh; it’s unexciting as a whole. This bottle doesn’t deserve to wear the Elysium name.

Somewhat underwhelmed. It performs better than the OG but lacks the character.
I tried a sample of Elysium Noir and had hopes that it would right an injustice for me. I used to own Elysium EDP, the original, and maintain to this day that it is one of the greatest masculine fresh/blue scents on the market. The problem is, as many have said before, the performance is a real problem. When it dries down, it disappears. I needed to spray a LOT, like unhealthy amounts just to get it to four hours and the projection is still non-existent really. I love it, but it is not something I can wear because I don't want to keep carrying round a $300 bottle to top up every 90 minutes. It wouldn't bother me so much but the scent is gorgeous and I love it. It all seemed a bit unfair to me. I have other quite fleeting and short-lived fragrances but none that disappear that fast and although I've always championed the view that if you like something, wear it and don't worry about the performance as not everything needs to be "beast mode", in the OG Elysium's case it is a deal breaker even for me.

So when I went to Harrods in February with a mate of mine and he picked up a FB of the Noir version, I expressly asked the assistant if it has better performance than the original. She said it does, and in fairness it does. My mate gave me a sample they gave him and I've worn it today. Right from the off I like the scent. It is nice. Masculine, bit very heavy or dark. I get two and a half hours off it but like the original it really doesnt sit in as a skin scent after that, it just goes. The scent itself is refined and quite attractive but not as good as the original and lacks a bit off the character of the original too. I enjoy the juniper in it and the way it works with a very soft, barely-there leather.

But I just think it misses the mark a bit. If you are going to pick something for a night out (and that is very much what this is aimed at) then it has to have a bit of character and a bit of presence. On my skin it doesnt have that. On my mate's skin it does and smells great on him, and he reports he gets a good five hours off it. So unless he's spraying half a bottle before he goes out, it may well be a skin chemistry thing for me and in that case I apologise to Rosa Dove London.

Even so, the scent gives me Bleu de Chanel EDT vibes, only not as strong or powerful. I like it. I actually think it is a nice day wearer (and that is exactly what I'm doing today, chilling round a pool in sunny and very peaceful and chilled out Dubai) in the way that BDC EDT is. I like both of these. They are refined and do what you want a relaxed day wearer to do, if you arent in the mood for a citrus overload. But I do question whether Elysium Noir breaks any new ground, or indeed is simply a safe bet. They'll sell thousands of these. It is a fragrance for guys who have two or three bottles on rotation but want something a couple of levels up from Dylan Blue or Acqua di Gio, or indeed, the aforementioned Bleu de Chanel. It isnt especially dark, or if I'm being brutally honest here, especially interesting to my nose. It nice, nothing more.

Knowing what Roja Dove London are capable of, I wish they'd been a bit more adventurous here and pushed the boat out a bit. I want real punch, real substance and genuine darkness and intrigue if they are marketing it as Elysium Noir and charging $300+ a bottle. It isnt hard to do. Look at Encre Noir. That is 10% the price, performs considerably better, is much more interesting and has genuine character for a night out. I would go as far as to say that Elysium Noir layered on top of Encre Noir would be a really nice combo, which I think tells you what I think is missing here.

Three Word Summary - A Bit Underwhelming

Scent - 6/10
Sillage - 5/10
Drydown - 5/10
Bottle/packaging - 9/10
Performance - 4/10

5.1 is Bullshit…
I am not a big fragrance connoisseur nor am I good at smelling and describing scents and their individual ingredients. But I find the rating does not correspond to the fragrance. I understand why people are pissed off,

“Oh, a new Roja” “Oh, another Elysium” expectations might be high and yes, the scent is not new and it wasn't really needed, and yes, the price is also ridiculous for the fragrance, but all of that does not make it a bad scent.

I would actually describe it as a spicier version of Y by YSL and Invictus. For me, this one, in contrast to most reviews, is less synthetic and more wearable than Y and Invictus. That is the point that makes the fragrance good for me, I like both of the aforementioned scents, but personally find them so penetrating and unbearable due to the synthetics that this one unites the actually not so bad scent of the two into a wearable fragrance. Furthermore, the Roja has a smoky/leathery touch. If I were to receive it as a gift, I would be happy and would wear the fragrance. It is a scent that can be worn anytime and anywhere.

Yes, it is not an innovation and it is also not what I expected, but a 5.1 is just bullshit in my opinion.

Addendum: it has absolutely nothing to do with the “Elysium” line. No citrus, no freshness that one knows from the predecessors.

Roja is reliably disappointing. Stale lavender mandarin start + generic blue dry down w/ soft performance. Temu offers better quality.

Obnoxiously synthetic, which is weird coming from Roja. Smells like cheap after-shave. Soapy, screechy ambrox nuke. Performance sucks.

Not much to say, it's nothing like Elysium. Mainly a macho masculine fresh shower gel designer DNA (ambroxan/lavender) built on soapy musk.

First Roja that I find extremely synthetic, specially in the opening. Its a light fougere. Noir? It should go by the name Blanc or Vert.

A fresh, generic scent that increasingly distances itself from the original masterpieces. Fresh with leathery and fruity nuances. Easy

If youre looking for a fresh, blue, aromatic men's fragrance that doesnt wreck your nose with aromachemicals in 10 seconds, this is great.

ROJA ???
Not what I know from ROJA so far, more like a designer with weak longevity and sillage.
