Apex Eau Intense is Roja's second Eau Intense flanker, following Elysium Eau Intense in 2023. With Elysium Eau Intense, the scent came after the Parfum Cologne and Parfum concentrations with the scent ultimately smelling like a twist on "Elysium Parfum Cologne (Eau de Parfum) | Roja Parfums" as it introduced a prominent rhubarb note. However, with this Apex flanker, it was always going to be a hard sell as the two products inspiring the flanker are fougère fragrances and a fresh fougère would still be a fougère... or would it?
After putting on Apex Eau Intense, the very first thing that I wrote down is that it doesn't smell like the original Apex Eau de Parfum. The flanker opens citrus-aromatic with light tea feel which made me think it was closer to scents like Aqua Media Cologne Forte and Wūlóng Chá Extrait de Parfum. The performance felt pretty poor off the rip and the scent doesn't have much special about it up-close either where it initially smells like a pretty standard citrus-aromatic with a prominent lemon note. Some nuances of barbershop are featured due to the woody-musky base, making me think of scents like "Casamorati - Mefisto | XerJoff".
I feel like once we get out of the initial moments, we get to see some nuances that can be associated with Apex, but in a completely different way. In the base, the two notes that I can pick up on the most are the grass and the driftwood, with the driftwood specifically reminding me of the composition of Clive Christian's Crab Apple Blossom. Ultimately, the scent is very much a woody citrus-aromatic, but the green touches are noteworthy in the base.
The overall package being proposed here is underwhelming. Performance does indeed end up at poor and it never really had much lift to begin with. I would place the longevity at around 4 hours with the sillage being intimate. The scent retails at €335/100ml, but the product itself shouldn't be anywhere near that price point. To summarize, there's nothing here that's even mildly reminiscent of the Apex Eau de Parfum DNA outside of the name. Apex Eau Intense slots in next to Roja's Parfum Cologne line where they sell various watered-down (and generic) products for nearly the same price.
