In my experience in the fragrance community, I've found that there are (at least) two types of fragrance enthusiast: the adventuresome ones who want to smell utterly unique, and the people searching for "the one." "The one" doesn't have to be especially unique, artsy, weird, or challenging in any way, just be the best version of that person's favorite DNA or fragrance family. It took me a while, since I am mostly in the first camp, to realize that is why people go head over heels for scents like
Imagination or
Aventus when to me they are not really innovative or that creative. But I think I'm coming around to the views of the second camp. Not everything needs to be artsy and challenging. Sometimes the best version of a "common" scent profile is simply a great fragrance.
And so we come to Oceania Parfum. Unfortunately I only tried the EDP once long ago, and only on strip, so I'm not going to do a compare/contrast. It could be that
Oceania Eau de Parfum is completely identical and this is a redundant release, I wouldn't be able to tell you. But what a great scent this is. It starts a little rough, with a green sort of soapy accord dominating, the "old-school" lavender/bergamot combo, but this is definitely not just a "gentleman" scent that smells like grandpa's soap. More like a modern wet-shaving experience. The aquatic/ozonic notes then come in, which are not really listed in the note pyramid, and are grounded by masculine florals (I get mostly the geranium). At this stage it smells like a more natural version of a blue shower-gel type fragrance, but the best is yet to come.
The drydown is absolutely gorgeous. A slightly smoked vetiver/oakmoss base with amber and musk, and I can swear I get some tobacco even though it is not listed. It's just effortlessly masculine and ultra high class. This is not your average "blue" scent.
And yet, it's still a blue scent. A couple of years ago, I would have dismissed this as "just another." It might not be "the one" for me since I'm more of a collector than a seeker; but for someone searching for "the one," who's signature scent is currently
Sedley or
Silver Mountain Water, Oceania Parfum could very well be it.
