Inoffensive unisex sweet citrus
Contralto is a nice pleasant inoffensive fragrance. Definitely unisex, possibly a little femme leaning but a lot more traditionally masculine than a lot of "unisex" fragrances these days (looking at you, Ave María). Sweet citrus, creamy orange blossom, drying down to soft cashmeran. I don't really get any spicy or nutty notes. I think the new hype surrounding it is simply due to it being available at a lower price point than the new Bal d'Afrique Absolu de Parfum. Haven't gotten a chance to try that one or Bal d'Afrique Eau de Parfum on skin, though I've tried them on strip. I think the absolu is the best of the three from what I smelled, but I have to confirm on skin.

Back to Contralto, it's not a bad fragrance; lasts decently long for a citrus freshie, probably worth the price if you're into this DNA. Nothing exciting here but nothing bad/wrong either.

Soft floral vibes
This is a beautiful feminine fragrance. It does have floral vibes without being a floral fragrance. And I've never smelled clove done so well. If I didn't see the clove in the notes, I'd never know it was there. I'm usually quite sensitive to it, and don't much care for it if I'm being honest. The chestnut is definitely present. It's blended perfectly. I'm really quite smitten with this one.

Brightness
The contralto is one of the rarest voices in opera music, the most powerful of the female voices, a unique gift.
And this is a fragrance that, with its brightness, gives a feeling of well-being and joy.
The orange blossoms are very gentle, overlaid by the green tones of juniper berries and a very composite sweetness, that of chestnut.
This creates something open, fresh, extremely attractive and with a unique elegance, in an interplay of notes that had me imagining this creation to be completely different from what I then smelled.
Beautiful, especially suitable when you want to bring a little extra brightness to the day.
The same effect that Van Gogh's ‘Sunflowers’ do to me.

Similar to BDA Absolu, but different
A disclaimer: Bal D’Afrique Absolu and the original Bal D’Afrique are my two favorite fragrances, which I wear layered most days. After sampling and loving (but before committing to buying) the Absolu, I found a good price on a partial bottle of Contralto and decided to see if that would scratch the itch.

Contralto’s opening is very similar to the Absolu, which has a stronger citrus opening than the original. The heart is very similar, though with a slightly more pronounced woodiness. The drydown of Contralto is sweeter than the original BDA, but holds on to a sharp-ish woodiness that is missing in the (sublime) drydown of the Absolu.

Had I tried Contralto before the Absolu, I might’ve been content with it. It’s certainly close enough that I would recommend it as a less expensive alternative. But unfortunately for me, I couldn’t settle for simply great when I had experienced perfection. (Obviously opinions will differ, and I can easily see how some people may prefer Contralto. It’s very good!)

Cool hand lotion smell
Smells like hand lotion. A very luxurious hand lotion. Toasty chestnut smell, surprisingly refreshing combo. Nothing groundbreaking considering Bal D'Afrique can be smelled in almost every major beauty or room smell product everywhere, but if clean and inoffensive is your vibe, this will definitely be up your alley.
