Duplicity
Basso wants to describe a situation.
Suddenly silence falls in the theatre, the melody announces the voice of the basso, which captures and transports everyone with its vibrations. The basso usually does not play the leading role in opera, but often represents divine, supreme characters (just think of Arrigo Boito's Mefistofele), a voice that leaves everyone mesmerised.
Basso is a fragrance that opens with very clear grapefruit notes, softened and made slightly sharp by the spices and ‘tamed’ by the very light floral side.
I see it initially very bright, sunny, and then in the evolution taking on deeper and more important traits.
This is why in my opinion it has no seasonality, being wonderfully multifaceted.
Excellent performance.

More tenor than bass
I speak as a studied musician and bass player of 30 years. This is more tenor than bass. From the name, I’d think this would be more about thick, deep, resinous notes. Clearly it’s not.

Bright, green, grassy, floral, sour grapefruit citrusy, spicy, peppery. On the color spectrum, I visualize orange, green, earthy tones.

Comparatively, sits between TdH Parfum and Roja’s Isola Blu. Isola Blu is more colorful, like light refracted through a prism, fruitier, juicier, brighter, sweeter in the base, more cheerful particularly in the opening hour. They become more similar in the dry down. Bear in mind these are subtle differences I’m speaking of. These two are very, very close and the differences come out only on close inspection.

I do have to say that the dry down does become a bit muddled here after an hour or so while Isola Blu retains the note separation and distinctness. The latter is somewhat higher quality but you will pay dearly for that very small difference.

Performance is comparative to the two aforementioned. Ultimately about average for a fresh citrusy perfume, or what I like to refer to as classy sillage, for yourself and those close to you. For all day enjoyment, you’ll want to take a travel sprayer. Eg. if you spray before going to work you’ll probably want to spray again on your lunch break.

I would not call Basso a great fragrance, but I do really enjoy it as I don’t demand too much from fresh citrusy summer fragrances. It’s an easy, likable wear with enough depth and complexity to keep me interested.

For those with small collections, this would be redundant if you had TdH Parfum or Isola Blu. For those like me with larger collections, you may find enough nuanced differences to have any or all of these. I am biased towards this one because of the name and my love for bass playing. And the quality and price ratio sits nicely in the attainable luxury spectrum: better than a standard designer and not outrageously priced where I’d need to worry about my bank account with every spray. But once my travel atomizer of Isola Blu is gone I’ll likely be purchasing a bottle of that too to wear on more rare occasions.

Edit: I keep coming back to this thought. This is the smell of Sprite as a perfume.

Beautiful sillage
Looking at these notes, they scream feminine mediocrity to me. I fully expected this to lean feminine and not really be anything special, but I was completely wrong about that.

This is a beautiful, perfectly unisex composition. It's so seamlessly blended that it's hard to discern any one note other than the bright burst of citrus right off the top.

It has a robust sillage and offers great performance, even in cold weather. It completely took me by surprise on this 35* windy winter day. I can only imagine what it will do with a little warmth.

Basso by Sospiro - The Better Terre d’Hermès? Signature-Worthy!
It is here - the Basso, the flagship of Sospiro. Some whisper that it is a shameless copy of Terre d’Hermès and that Sospiro is merely a "dupe house." But are these statements justified? Or is there an underestimated treasure behind Basso that deserves more recognition? You will find the answer in this review.

From the very first spray, a déjà vu sets in - Terre d'Hermès Eau de Toilette! The fragrance starts off dry, slightly sour and sparkling, yet still lightly fruity - very characteristic of grapefruit. In my opinion, grapefruit is the greatest citrus note for men: natural, masculine, but by no means outdated. Rather, it gives the fragrance a youthful freshness. The opening is underscored by the distinctly noticeable vetiver. To enjoy Basso, one should definitely be a fan of this prominent scent note. Often, vetiver fragrances can seem a bit old-fashioned, but Basso is aimed at all men of any age from 20 onwards. The scent radiates confidence and possesses a masculine weight that is both seductive and noble. In summary, Basso is citrusy, woody, and vetiver-heavy, while also being fresh with remarkable depth and complexity, making it an absolute all-rounder for the year and very versatile in use. In the drydown, the fragrance increasingly develops into a soothing woody and slightly spicy direction, without losing its sparkle - likely due to the pepper.

In direct comparison to "Terre d'Hermès (Eau de Toilette) | Hermès," Basso excels in the following points:

1) Basso feels more authentic, organic, and natural in the olfactory experience. One has the feeling of smelling something truly high-quality and niche.

2) The fragrance possesses a subtle, masculine floral quality that Terre d’Hermès lacks. While Basso is not an explicit floral scent, this fine floral note adds additional elegance and finesse.

3) Basso conveys more maturity, is deeper and more complex. This makes it feel more masculine, but also somewhat more grown-up.

4) The longevity and sillage are significantly better: 9-10 hours for Basso compared to 5 hours for Terre d’Hermès.

Of course, Provenzano hasn’t reinvented the wheel here - but does he even have to? Rather, it seems that he has realized his own interpretation of Terre d’Hermès - a version as he has always envisioned this scent. At Sospiro, he was evidently able to fully unfold and show how to perfect flagship fragrances of other brands. With creations like "Erba Pura Magica | Sospiro," "Accento Viola | Sospiro," "Vibrato | Sospiro," and "Basso | Sospiro," he has surpassed himself.

The packaging is simple and reminiscent of the velvet bottles from the Xerjoff Vibe series. The craftsmanship of the bottle and sprayer is comparable to other niche fragrances in this price range.

In conclusion, I can say that Basso is not a "dupe" for me, but rather a 2.0 version of Terre d’Hermès with slight Isola Blu Parfum nuances. I hope my review helps you in your purchasing decision.

Enjoy testing!

WOW! What a remarkable fragrance.
First of all: It is a special pleasure for me to write the very first review of a fragrance. :)

Basso - you are definitely something else. It may be that others associate different scents with you, but that will neither bother you nor me. Because no one can match your sophistication and quality. With your character, you immediately captivated me. If I were to describe you in three keywords, it would be: Citrusy, spicy, and woody.

You are finely tuned and truly well-rounded. Man, you are good! You don’t shout but make your presence felt. It’s no wonder I’ve often been approached because of you. Your longevity on my skin lasts for a workday. I don’t know how Maestro Provenzano has managed it, but your citrus note is really perceptible for a very long time.

I’m glad you exist!

Citrus-floral wet vibe w/ woody vetiverian base. Slightly more constructed than Roja's blandness but still in the designer's league.

Fresh-citrusy-green, clearly imitates Isola Blu/Oligarch (90-95% of the blending). Less sillage, mildly better longevity, far better value.

As one of THE office perfumes of all time, bAsso's daringly focused on absolutely nothing; a eunuch's favorite woody-citrusy-green perfume.

The Vetiver-Grapefruit DNA driven to perfection. Sits somewhere between TdH and Isola Blu, perfectly blended, elegant, masculine

Reminds Terre d’Hermes but waay better than it

Isola Blu copy? No. Close at less than 1/3rd the cost. Less fruity, more green, like Sprite. Messy dry down. Largely synthetic. Not great.

Less earthy, lighter, higher quality TdH you can dress up or down. Great for work, leisure, daily, or evening wear. Signature scent worthy.

Terre de Hermes and Isola Blu had a child. Simple. Period. But also very very solid warm weather fragrance.

A youthful, green, fresh scent, it could be one of the defining scents of summer.
