Sparkle Plenty
This delicious fragrance radiates far and wide, thanks to a glittery, fruity-aldehydic top. Its drydown is warm and feminine, however. A bit like Mackie, but more sedate. Nice for daytime.

Tennis, anyone?
This was the first fragrance of the Argentine Olympic gold-medalist in tennis, Gabiel Sabatini. She's 44 now and this scent is 25 years old, but it still feels young to me. I picked it out by the notes because I've learned chances are I'll love any scent built on orange blossom, jasmine, amber, musk and vanilla, the classic floriental skeleton. Throw in bergamot and my favorite woods, patchouli and sandalwood, and the only way I'm not going to love it is if the mixing machines malfunctioned at the perfume factory. They didn't for Sabatini. This is a potent oriental, long on exotic and sultry. It projects strongly at first then dries down to beauty, but I'm wondering if something isn't wrong with my skin today since nothing seems to last very long. Will try again tomorrow. Meanwhile, I'm now seeing it's possible to build a fabulous scent wardrobe from inexpensive perfumes on sale at Amazon or the discount sites. Simply look up the notes in a loved perf, then browse for a cheaper version. It won't always work, of course, but enough to make the effort worthwhile, like my recent browses. Would I have plunked down dollars for pricier orientals if I'd found this first? Maybe. Maybe not.

The Past Strikes Again
How I loved this concoction. Gabriela Sabatini was my first perfume that left a lasting impression on me - and my surroundings. It was practically an important part of my olfactory socialization. I owned the Eau de Parfum in the early 90s and bought it once again. The scent was very popular back then. My girlfriend loved it, and later my father gifted it to my mother. Some time ago, I clumsily spilled the fragrance in my mother's bathroom when the bottle slipped from my hand during a scent test - well, we all have our moments of weakness. In any case, it smelled immensely good then. I recently picked up a 20-ml Eau de Toilette bottle on sale at Rossmann. I wanted to take my time and thought, with 20 ml, you can't go wrong.

And so far, I haven't made a mistake. I feel transported back to old times. The bottle somehow reminds me of a tennis ball in line with the tennis icon Gabriela Sabatini, and the content is a typical brew of its time. It comes from a distant era when we carefree indulged in scents, following the motto: "I smell, therefore I am!" An era in which we felt a fragrance belonged to us and used it generously. A sort of olfactory statement! It reminds me of Joop Femme, with the difference that the latter doesn't work as well on me.

Gabriela Sabatini is soft, warm, spicy, floral, green-woody, citrusy, feminine, profound, and does not drift into olfactory triviality. It has a slightly artificial note. That's why I parted ways with the scent many years ago; I also felt I had somewhat outgrown it. But the real reason for our separation was that my obsession with Gabriela Sabatini simply lost its rank. But so what. Now I own both fragrances again.

Gabriela Sabatini has an acceptable sillage and very good longevity. If you don't overapply, the scent is present but not overpowering. It starts fruity-sweet, becomes more citrusy over time, a bit more robust, and slightly vanillic. Gabriela Sabatini is wearable year-round, day and night. I associate its richness with curves and not anorexia, enjoyment and not asceticism, letting go and not iron discipline. To me, it feels sporty, dynamic, cheerful, and approachable, balanced and well-composed. It is an adult fragrance, neither playful nor sweet. A beautiful all-rounder that outshines many high-priced scents. Apparently, it has never been altered and is thus a piece of fragrance history.

A few days ago, a long-time friend complimented me on the scent. That seems like a good start for the rekindled romance between Gabriela Sabatini and me.

Beautiful Classic
GS is a fragrance that can undoubtedly be classified as a classic. Launched in 1989 and alongside 4711, Tosca, Nonchalance, Maroussia, and the Swan by Vanderbilt, it is one of the few scents that has been continuously available on the shelves of drugstores and perfumeries for years - otherwise, it's a constant coming and going. After a few years, most of them disappear, and only a few fragrances actually make it to classic status.

I received my first bottle as a gift back then, it must have been around 1990. Whether I actually finished the bottle or if it ended up in the trash at some point, I can't say for the life of me. At that time, I preferred Joop Femme, which smells very similar but was significantly stronger even back then. Both have probably been reformulated since, and I haven't sniffed Joop in years, but GS seems much lighter to me than it did back then. However, that doesn't bother me... ;-)

Last autumn, I was looking for a fragrance that fits the season. I have so little choice. *gg* At Müller, my eye fell on the good old GS. 20ml for €6.95. It was a spontaneous purchase; I hadn't really thought about the fragrance, but I had fond memories of it and a bit of sentimentality attached. I had received it during a very beautiful time in my life, so why not give the fragrance another chance? I sprayed it on at home in peace and immediately traveled back to the early 90s, to the vacation at Lake Wörthersee with my then intense, but unfortunately far too short love. Ah....

It seems more aldehydic to me than in the 90s, but maybe I remember it differently. Otherwise, it smells pretty much the same to me, although significantly lighter, which I actually appreciate. At the beginning, it is downright soap-clean, but still not dusty. It is very complex for me, floral, warm, cozy, classic. An everyday scent, perhaps for the cold season and not exactly for very warm days, and with 1-2 sprays - distributed - it is not too much, but rather close to the body. It is very rounded and soft, nothing pokes, pricks, or gives me a headache. Besides the aldehydes, I can clearly detect neroli, jasmine, and tuberose. In the base, I can't smell patchouli, which I am quite glad about. Instead, there is a lot of sandalwood; the scent is wonderfully soft and cuddly. A bit of musk as well, but just a little, so it doesn't bother me. Even my husband, who hates musk, doesn't complain about it; on the contrary, he likes the scent. A touch of vanilla rounds off the fragrance nicely. I'm not so sure about the amber; at least the scent doesn't take on an animalistic, tacky touch on me, which unfortunately often happens with fragrances that have a lot of amber.

For me, a truly beautiful classic that has been around for 27 years now - I wouldn't mind another 27 years.

Summer '92 at the Luisenburg Festival
This fragrance played a role in my life exactly once: namely when I was engaged at the Luisenburg Festival in the summer of '92.
A full bottle of this perfume was always in the makeup room throughout the festival and was extensively used by everyone coming in and out - even the men.

The reason for this was:
the Luisenburg is an open-air stage in the middle of the forest, and during evening performances in the height of summer, myriads of (tiny) mosquitoes gathered on the brightly lit stage, which, according to the sweating actors, preferred to crawl under their glued-on hairpieces. Someone had discovered that those who generously doused themselves with Gabriela Sabatini before going on stage no longer had this problem.

I suspect the first bottle of this EdT was not very well received as a gift from an admirer and ended up in the makeup room - until someone realized it kept the ever-present mosquitoes at bay.
And over the weeks, it became a ritual that everyone who entered the makeup room treated themselves to a spritz. And a few mocking remarks were made. Probably because the scent was too mainstream for the majority of us.
Personally, I found it too strong and too sweet, even though I thought it was solid. Still, I will forever associate beautiful memories of that festival summer with this fragrance, and for that alone, I appreciate it.

At first very floral and sweet, a little bit freshness and then a warm vanilla. It is very beautiful, intense and can cause a headache :(

KN: "Soap alert!", the aldehydes threaten,
HN: while Tubi, Jasmine & Heli roll in an oriental fruit salad.
B: Come on, just throw a musk blanket over it & it's all good.

Joop! Femme was released in 1987. Then Gabriela Sabatini in 1989. I found them similar. Available for thirty(!) years. Respect. Lasts for hours.

Honeysuckle, heliotrope, and aldehydes from another dimension. Blinding bright light, cold and warmth. Nose-blending. The primal alien.

Reminds me of Casmir, but I find C. rounder and more successful. With Sabatini, there's also a note that I don't like.

World trip in the 80s with flared pants. Tropical white flowers with oriental spice. Soapy-clean with aldehyde freshness + retro touch. Great value for money.
