Rotting Fruit
I was sooo excited when I first heard about Bat. I have many childhood memories of touring and exploring caves, tunnels, mines...and there is some common element of those environments that I just can't get enough of. I've been trying to figure out what that smell is for more than 20 years. Anyway, as soon as I read "cave", I knew I needed to try Bat. Unfortunately, my Canadian idea of a cave is evidently very different from a tropical cave (which I should have expected, in hindsight).
Even putting aside my disappointment over what I *wanted* it to be, I just don't like it. This is overripe tropical fruit and dirt. It smells like a butterfly conservatory - it's damp and earthy and there are rotting platters of fruit sitting out for the butterflies to feed on. It smells a little too similar to my compost bin for my liking. It's like a hot, humid, shallow, tropical cave in the jungle. I want a cold, dusty, underground cave with dripping stalactites. I want to feel like I am alone in the darkness under dozens of feet of rock. This is so far removed from the dark, moody, atmospheric fragrance that I would expect from something named "Bat". It should really be named "Fruit Bat".
In case anyone else is invested in my search, I did eventually find my perfect cave scent. It’s Bune by Fantome. *That* is what I wanted from Bat. I'm also excited to try Olm from Zoologist (which didn't exist back when I first sampled Bat) - this sounds a lot closer to what I'm looking for.
