Rotting Fruit
I was sooo excited when I first heard about Bat. I have many childhood memories of touring and exploring caves, tunnels, mines...and there is some common element of those environments that I just can't get enough of. I've been trying to figure out what that smell is for more than 20 years. Anyway, as soon as I read "cave", I knew I needed to try Bat. Unfortunately, my Canadian idea of a cave is evidently very different from a tropical cave (which I should have expected, in hindsight).

Even putting aside my disappointment over what I *wanted* it to be, I just don't like it. This is overripe tropical fruit and dirt. It smells like a butterfly conservatory - it's damp and earthy and there are rotting platters of fruit sitting out for the butterflies to feed on. It smells a little too similar to my compost bin for my liking. It's like a hot, humid, shallow, tropical cave in the jungle. I want a cold, dusty, underground cave with dripping stalactites. I want to feel like I am alone in the darkness under dozens of feet of rock. This is so far removed from the dark, moody, atmospheric fragrance that I would expect from something named "Bat". It should really be named "Fruit Bat".

In case anyone else is invested in my search, I did eventually find my perfect cave scent. It’s Bune by Fantome. *That* is what I wanted from Bat. I'm also excited to try Olm from Zoologist (which didn't exist back when I first sampled Bat) - this sounds a lot closer to what I'm looking for.

rotten fruits in a cave
At first this was a beautiful floral fruity scent that was enveloped in a smooth smoky cloud in a wet cave somewhere in the mountains, but then this became a sickly sweet mess with heavy incense notes and none of that refreshing wetness that initially made this stand out. The drydown essentially lost me and I wish the initial smell is what stayed. The fruits here read rotten and mushy as well.

Earthy, Soapy Mop Water
This one was so confusing! The initial scent was incense and vetiver but was soon replaced by an animal living in a dank, dirty cave with soapy mop water. It just kept morphing, and not necessarily for the best.

Luckily, it didn't last long, but it lasted long enough for me to keep questioning it's existence of this fragrance. I appreciate the artistry of it, but I really don't know what occasion anyone would wear this for. Maybe it would work better on other people's chemistry but on me, it just wasn't good. This one is just so odd, but I can guarantee there is nothing else like it!

Bat(man)
I think if this wasn't a part of Zoologist it wouldn't have such mixed reviews, it's a masculine leaning earthy scent first and foremost. If you have the image of a Bat in mind, it's incredibly realistic: a cool cave, wet soil, some faint fruitiness. It's so interesting, but it's also very wearable in my opinion. It shines in cool rainy days, it's more interesting than your average men's fragrance, and it gives such a cool edge. One of the best I've tried from Zoologist!

petting zoo in a bottle
opens with dirt and hay, with animalic notes that are much like a stable or petting zoo. there's a slight spice in all the hay, and fairly faint floral notes. it smells like damp hay, damp rotting plant matter, or a rather wet cave. it's earthy and dank and wet, reeking of animals.

as it's sat, it's become progressively more fruity and clean, greatly lightening that petting zoo smell, and bringing about a brightness that pushes back those unwashed animal notes. i would almost describe the fruit as "soapy".
in the dim lantern light, you can spot the silhouette of a bat, hanging from the rafters of a barn. then another, and then another. small flying mouse like creatures making an impromptu home in the home of your beloved animals.

Mineral soil with an overlay of rotting fruit and vegetation, but somehow very darkly pretty.

Three words: eccentric fruity cave

Huh?! This is just a slightly dirty aromatic fougere. Chamomile+lavender dominant, mildly sweet earthy backdrop. Damp stable, not batcave!

Much more wearable than I thought. Soil and mineral/rocky notes with a sharp fruity and woody undertone. Strange damp greenness as well.

Wearable dirt and cedar! A masculine, odd fougere that smells a good bit leathery & musky. It's a shame it's so soft.

Sweetened soil in a damp cave. Has a very slight hint of guano. Smells like the Congress bridge in Austin, truly an experience.

Slightly overripe tropical fruits eaten while sitting on wet dirt. It's not super wearable but a beautiful fragrance nonetheless.

Earthy moist soil rich in tropical fruits. It could be a cave with bats or the coffin of an elegant vampire. Hypnotic
