smoke softened by steam
I've spent countless YouTube hours watching travelers wind their way through Japan's remote mountains in search of hidden onsen. Macaque conjures what I imagine in those moments before slipping into these natural hot springs: that sharp intake of breath as mountain air fills the lungs, a bracing brightness that stings like citrus without any trace of sweetness. Then comes the dry herbal/woody medicinal presence of cypress wood warming in the sun, and finally, the contemplative drift of incense carried on thermal currents. Its smoke is different here - softened and diffused by rising steam until it becomes almost tactile, like silk suspended in air. There's something sacred in this solitude of smoke and steam, something that recalls the aftermath of a hot shower but earthier, more ancient - less about soap than the quiet ritual of purification, with just a whisper of mineral-rich air. The lasting impression is of warmth remembered rather than felt, like late afternoon sun lingering after the day has begun to cool.

yuzu, Hinoki, incense
Smells identical to the Fuji apple after the full dry down which is to be expected, but I prefer this one’s opening much much more. The yuzu is bright, crisp, juicy and perfectly citrusy with a bitter tang it that compliments the general aromatic & woody scent profile. I do find the incense nuances here are a bit more toned down than in the Fuji version but they’re both essentially Hinoki forward scents with crisp aromatics and grounding incense, this is a bright citrus opening while the other is a mellowed crisp apple.

Unexpected friend
I have to admit that I got my Macaque Yuzu sample when it was back in stock, mainly to complete my Zoologist sample collection, not because I was particularly interested in the theme/narrative of the Macaque or in the scent profile. But I actually really enjoy it.

The citrus in the opening reminds me a bit of the citrus in Northern Cardinal (one of my favourites), although that obviously doesn’t have any Yuzu in it. But it’s the same soft, sweet and almost floral leaning mandarin that’s just very up lifting. It is said that frankincense has an uplifting and warming effect on the mind and emotions too. Do these notes explain why smelling Macaque Yuzu instantly puts me in a good mood? I’m not a huge fan of incense and myrrh and if they’re combined with sweet, resinous amber-y notes, they tend to smell a bit off on my skin - but in Macaque Yuzu, the citrus seems to keep them nice and bright.

I would say the projection is just right. Not too ‘big’ at all, but it lingers for hours like a good memory. It doesn’t try too hard and doesn’t have to. All the notes are very well blended into one scent, nothing stands out and it feels very balanced.

I didn’t expect to be friends with this monkey, but he turns out to be that one friend you might overlook at first, but who always shows up when you need them. They're not loud or flashy, but there's a quiet strength in their presence. They're warm, calm, and grounding. Not too complicated, never demanding, just.. steady. The kind of person who hands you a cup of tea, listens without interrupting, and reminds you to breathe.

Youthful, energizing, overall good scent
Yuzu with Hinoki and Incense, a perfect combination, but since it seems that not many people can smell it, and it doesn't last that long/average longevity, I would say this is a 7, although it is very much to my liking. This is a youthful summer scent for people who want to appear more unisex/masc leaning

The Cute Monkey Wedding
On my Zoologist trip was now allowed to prove the enclosed exclusive sample (in my case the Yuzu Edition) before my nose.
At the start predominate rather citrusy tart notes with the typical Zoologist horse stable aroma, but I immediately notice the generally rather sweet character. Unlike all the Zoologist tested by me so far (and there are already a few by now), this is the first, which of intensity and sillage does not strike like an asteroid in your environment, but makes itself rather tenderly noticeable. Here is not the big monkey party, but a cozy get-together.
The horse stable aroma evaporates quite quickly and the fragrance develops with me to the tenderly sweet smoker with almost sacral character, the tart aromas then also step somewhat into the background, the sweetness remains and hovers as a fruity note behind the (bright) incense.
Unfortunately, the monkey wedding ends faster than the rest of the animal celebrations in Zoologist Park.
In conclusion, this already shows the dilemma. If I'm a fan of Zoologist, then I want a Zoologist, and then I kind of expect the intensity atom bomb, always something more, something more mature, something more putrid, something more animal.
If I'm a fan of incense scents (and I definitely am), then it's allowed to be more of this and more sophisticated, and others do that better.
Now the monkey stands on his wedding and must ask himself, what am I now?
In any case, I am not a zoologist, even if I can certainly go in everyday life times among people (because that can not really many in the zoologist park), but I am also not bad. I smell pleasant, without question, but there's still something missing.
What is unfortunately not missing is the decent price for this monkey wedding.

In the end, I have to get rid of one last impression. With many (not all) Zoologist one can already assign the fragrance well to the eponymous animal, with me most strongly with Elephant, but I can not understand with the best will in the world, what the Macaque here should have to do with the monkey...

Fresh green aromatics with a spritz of citrus and a sort of watery, kinda waxiness to it with incense. Like a snuffed forest-scented candle.

this has absolutely nothing to do with yuzu but develops into a pretty nice myrrh/frankincense

It's astringent at first, and something between the yuzu and juniper gives a house cleaning detergent scent.

Immensely fun! My eyes lit up when I sprayed it. I just wish the intensity of that first spray would last a bit longer...

Exquisite and dry Japanese incense, tiny hint of yuzu brightness. If you're into incense, it's excellent. My wife isn't, so I had to pass.
