You just won the lottery and want to treat yourself to a high-end luxurious leather handbag. So there you go, walking into this stylish designer boutique as you are enveloped by the smooth and creamy scent of suede, that mingles with the expensive niche fragrances of the sophisticated and beautiful people in this store. Immediately you feel the need to buy the whole store, because you want to immerse yourself in this heavenly cloud, never to emerge again.

Crème de Cuir Eau de Parfum starts off as a woody, peppery pineapple scent but then immediately starts to develop into the smoothest and creamiest suede fragrance you can imagine. While many might be a bit cautious when it comes to leathery scents, let me just tell you that it is not pungent, sharp or overwhelming at all, but rather a velvety suede-on-the-skin kind of scent. The fruity aspects quickly hide far in the back and the base notes start to create a beautiful depth and warmth, leaving you with a soft suede blanket that hugs you like a glove.

My oh my, this scent really is a beautiful piece of art. It is perfectly unisex and smells like luxury, success and little bit of mystery paired with the cozy warmth only a loved one can provide.

For me this might not be an everyday scent but rather this one fragrance that you save for special occasions even though I assume that a bolder person than myself could easily pull this off as a daily dose of CEO vibe. Also with this scent profile I would lean towards wearing it in the colder season but I am also looking forward to seeing what this scent will do to the sun-kissed skin in summer.

While my other musky, creamy go-to scents give me a sense of peace, calm and instant relaxation, this one has me dreaming of everything life can offer.

Made me love suede notes in fragrances!

I used to absolutely detest suede and leather in fragrances because often times, they come off smelling like plastic to me and on me in fragrances. However, as my taste continues to change, I’m finding that I enjoy a good suede note and don’t care for actual leather as much. Suede is like a softened, velvety version of the harsher and denser leather.

In Crème de Cuir, the suede is soft and brightened by the citruses and spicy notes. The opening is a bit disorienting, but once all the notes settle, it’s becomes remarkably smooth, soft and silky. I love the juxtaposition of the citruses on top and woods + musks in the bottom, and I feel like it has a multifaceted vibe of uplifting, calming, but still very sexy and sensual. My mom has a bottle and every time I’d put some on, I found myself becoming more and more infatuated with the scent.

Performance is good on my skin, lasts over 8+ hours with good application and leave a beautiful scent trail that is sort of addictive. Versatile and perfectly unisex imo, but could see it leaning slightly feminine. I never thought I’d take an affinity to this scent, but I’m happy to have a full bottle coming to wear for the fall. Definitely an underrated one from BDK.

A different take on pineapple

This is a nice scent, and I do like it, but I'm a bit disappointed that it doesn't smell like the name suggests at all. I wanted creamy leather and got smokey pineapple instead.

The opening is quite tart and fruity. Pineapple and citrus notes are blended with dry woods and pink pepper and a smokey backdrop that I can't link to any of the listed notes. At first I thought the scent would go into a more masculine leaning direction, but as it dries down, it becomes sweeter and turns into a true unisex scent.
Vanilla and a milky sandalwood warm it up considerably. It even becomes a bit creamy, but still not as much as I would like it to be. The soft white suede starts to get noticeable, too, but it's blended into the smokey and woodsy notes and doesn't stand out as much. Hints of citrus and pineapple cling to the base, so Crème de Cuir retains a certain freshness all through the drydown, even in the final skinscent when vanilla has taken over.

For me this could have been improved with a little more oomph, more creaminess and maybe an amped up vanilla. The notes sound so great on paper, I just wish they popped a little more. It's a matter of personal taste in the end. I still think this is absolutely worth a try, just expect a cooler, more subtle interpretation of the notes, not some kind of leathery gourmand.

An uninteresting leather perfume with a fruity start.

This review is based on a sample vial purchased directly from BDK. I bought this as part of the 4 for $24 deal from BDK.

The opening notes are a fruity mix, of which pineapple is the most discernible to me. For a fleeting moment, you also get orange and bergamot. Almost immediately, the fruity notes are overcome by a leathery note (white suede according to the perfumer) along with a sandalwood-like woody note. I don’t really get much of the pink pepper in the heart notes. This perfume is essentially what the heart notes are, a pleasant albeit uninteresting woody leather with powdery nuances. The powder must be the creme suggested in the name. Once the heart notes settle in 4-6 hours, a mild woody vanilla and musk appear as the base notes. I was surprised how the leather is completely gone in the base notes, changing the personality of the perfume. Contrast this with one of the best leather perfumes out there - Fahrenheit from Dior. Fahrenheit maintains the leather note until the perfumes fade away completely. But this transition from the powdery sandalwood leather to woody vanilla and musk in Creme de Cuir is not jarring as the all notes have subsided by then.

Creme de Cuir lasts on my skin for 4-6 hours, with the pleasant musky vanilla notes lingering for a few extra hours. Sillage is reasonable, about a few feet for the first few hours. It is perfectly reasonable to wear this in an office setting, though it lacks any particular personality.

Creme de Cuir is supposed to evoke the authentic charm of Italian cities. For me, it feels like a poorly written high school play where various characters appears at regular intervals to deliver their lines and exit. I can’t sense an overarching theme that connects all the notes. There are so many other excellent leather perfumes in the market, so there is really no reason to go after Creme de Cuir.

Scent you won't forget

This is a very sophisticated and well-blended unisex scent. I don’t detect any of the top notes, and for me, the scent profile doesn’t change much, which I like a lot. Although I don’t usually like leather scents, there’s something addictive about this one. I think this is the best BDK perfume. It’s suitable for formal occasions. I don’t know why, but I always reach for this scent on cloudy, grey days.
