Hard Shell with an Even Harder Core
Like a tank, the crystal glass bottle protects its contents. Should one really dare to remove the heavy lid, should one let the beast escape?
I dared and am torn. "Dhan oudh al Combodi" reminds me primarily of a slightly better Dhan Oud al Shams. The composition is perhaps a touch more elegant, but fundamentally at least for now, it is similar. I also wonder what notes are really hidden here and in Dhan Oud al Shams. There are definitely nuances that only amplify the "fecal" aspect of the oud. Perhaps something floral? Or animalistic musk? I can't say for sure.
The more the scent settles, the less resemblance it has to Dhan Oud al Shams. Now memories of fragrances from "Hind al Oud" come to mind, which carry a very special, animalistic note. Strangely, this seems to bother fewer people than the supposedly fecal aspect of oud. I, on the other hand, couldn't warm up to it as well. The Hind al Oud fragrances were presented to me as scents with animalistic musk. But that can't be responsible for this. I have smelled real musk. It smells somewhat of "life," but quite soft, rather sweet; not so dominantly animalistic.
The biggest shame is that the bottle does not seem to be refillable. Such a magnificent, heavy, solid vessel. And then just throw it away when the scent is gone?
For me, the "Mukhallat Oudh Siufi" remains the most beautiful Rasasi I have tested so far.
However, I can certainly attribute a unique feature to "Dhan oudh al Combodi." It is not a scent that simply tries to smell like oud. And yes, it is an animalistic scent. But in various facets, with different nuances that come and go.
For me, that's 70%. Simply because it is not an oud that makes me feel cuddled and protected. Objectively, however, it is interestingly executed.
If an oud ever feels like too much for me, by the way, I tend to layer. And I can only recommend that. Just layer it with a nice amber or a matching, noble rose scent, and voilà, wonderful. I like to use Ambre Dore. Now it’s a beautiful harmony.
