Durra is a big surprise for me within the 2nd generation. Practically nobody knows it, nobody talks about it, but it has such a unique character that it deserves much more attention.
The
Durra takes you on a precious journey along a maritime coastline where the ocean meets dense forests and exotic markets. A symphony of aquatic accords and intense spices.
Let's get into it:
- The fragrance opens with a fresh burst of almost iodine sea notes, airy ozone and salty accords give the opening this maritime soul at the beginning. This aquatic feeling is accompanied by subtle pepper and warm nutmeg. The fruity accords are embedded, but cannot be smelled individually. However, they give the fragrance a certain sweet fruitiness.
- After a few minutes, the fragrance takes you deep into a forest, the oud comes into play with a beautiful animalic quality, together with the cedar wood there is a beautiful woodiness and the olibanum with its smoky character also creates a luxurious touch. This is where the fragrance can become a little challenging for many.... but only briefly, as it is followed by a beautiful, subtle honey note that blends with the incense and contrasts this dark woodiness. But then, step by step, a certain balsamic vein emerges, before the light floral aspects slowly appear.
- In the drydown, the civet and oud temporarily take the animalic notes up a notch, whereby the amber and praline, despite their resinousness and sweetness, have little effect, as the animalic notes continue to dominate for a very long time. It is only later that a gentle tobacco and a little tonka bean and vanilla are added, which tame these animalic notes.
A really complex fragrance, and the individual fragrance notes are really hard to smell, I had to concentrate very hard for a long time. Nevertheless, the fragrance is harmonious if you understand the idea behind it. Yes, it is an interplay of oceanic/maritime and woody-animalic-sweet accords and sometimes the dance partners meet until the drydown, because the maritime disappears temporarily, but then comes up again.
The performance is really brute; the fragrance lasts a long time and projects strongly, like many of the SoD.
A really great fragrance that executes this basic oceanic idea extremely well and creates a really opulent aura. But you definitely have to be ready for this complexity.
