What do I actually expect from a fragrance?
When I wear a fragrance, it is even closer to my true self than my clothing. It can make a deep statement about my self-image. However, this self-image is not homogeneous - for very few people is it that way. It is more than just the fact that we have to fulfill different roles, something we also express by wearing something different for the office than for a festival visit; it also has to do with how we characterize ourselves and the fact that these character traits can be quite contradictory.
There is so much within me: For example, a tendency towards unexpected breaks, polite understatement, or a sense for decadent passions. And for these aspects, I can immediately think of the suitable fragrances.
There is also something in me that resonates with Shoku Him. Perhaps not loudly, but at least loud enough that I enjoy wearing the fragrance. What could that be?
The fragrance navigates through a twilight: The freshness is broken before it becomes boring, the development is unremarkable, the character does not come across as intrusive, yet it does not hide either. Well-balanced, one might say; one could also say it lacks character, and yet mean the same thing.
And when do I wear it? Perhaps when I am in a similarly indifferent mood, as it does not hurt this mood, nor does it want to twist or sugarcoat it. It does not push itself forward any more than I would in such moods. But then something peppery crawls out like a fine ray of sunlight.
I cannot wear Shoku Him all the time, and it took me a while to warm up to it, but when I wear it, it brings me joy - and that is what I expect most of all from a fragrance. It certainly does not represent the most exciting sides of my personality, but neither does it represent the worst.
