Rouge Sarây Atelier des Ors 2020

Atelier des Ors Rouge Saray is a dense, sweet, woody, and ever so slightly powdery/floral blend featuring a big heart of dates, patchouli, and heliotrope with support of cinnamon, guaiac, jasmine, and plum. It definitely gives a bit of the “spice market” vibe while being nuanced and different from other examples of this, somehow both plenty sweet (a little vanilla, a little fruit) while also floral and also spicy. It’s an odd intersection but one that’s well-achieved via a good balance, as none of the aspects seem to especially outshine another. I also get a bit of a resinous vibe throughout, though no resins themselves are listed in the note breakdown.

Its concentration is EDP and it’s sold at Luckyscent for $275 for 100ml. It performs quite well, better than Larmes du Desert, even though I prefer the LDD scent itself.

To me, it’s good but not great, a like not a love, but surely still worth trying as I could see many people loving this.

Close your eyes and imagine yourself transported into a caravan somewhere in the Middle East upon the Silk Road. Rich, sweet fruit notes and exotic spices mingle with the heat and shimmer of the desert.

This fragrance transports me to the glory days of the Silk Road. I imagine myself as a Bedouin walking with camels, heading home with treasures from the East. On my skin, the scent opens with juicy, ripe plum married to dry, pungent cinnamon and hints of indolic jasmine. As it dries down, a sticky, delicious, and tantalizing date note emerges. Personally, I get the specific richness of a Medjool date (which honestly makes me want to go grab some for a snack!).

This is accented by the honeyed sweetness of powdery heliotrope, which clings to and enhances the date note perfectly. An earthy touch of patchouli brings the sweetness down just a notch or two, balancing the composition beautifully. A thick, syrupy vanilla—reminiscent of a fine vanilla liqueur rather than pure sugar—comes into play, alongside creamy sandalwood that adds yet another luxurious layer.

Is it a gourmand? Perhaps. Is it a spicy fragrance? In a way. Ultimately, it is simply marvelous: warm, soothing, bewitching, and sexy.

Rouge Sarây by Atelier des Ors is a refined gourmand that has been crafted by one of the best living perfumers, as the rest of this line. As the founder of the brand explained it is inspired to the middle eastern ritual of offering dates to guests and it wants to evoke conviviality moments. Simply put it is a woody dates scent that can make happy the woody perfume lover and the gourmand one as well. This is the second Atelier des Ors perfume I was able to sample. I picked Rouge Sarây as I was intrigued by the whole "perfume built around a date" concept. And, to be honest, I feel like this is a brilliant success having that in mind.

The best part of this fragrance to me is the drydown. Gaiac wood carries the whole composition, making a perfect resinous rich woody background with the help of sandalwood. It feels almost leathery and sticky, reminiscent of the date looks. The date itself is mixed with the juicy plum and green patchouli, making it slightly more reminiscent of a smoked prune. I must also admit the unique use of jasmine, that represents both overwhelming sweetness and slight freshness. Use of cinnamon is also unique, giving the whole composition a heady spicy feeling with a hint of refreshing zing.

The perfume itself might look cloying or heavy judging from the description, but it's actually the opposite. This isn't a "let the whole room smell me" sort of fragrance, the sillage is very subdued. The drydown especially is very close to the skin and not overwhelming at all. But it stays resolutely for a day or so, not requiring much of any refreshing.

Overall, I'm very very impressed with this fragrance. Truly, a unique and well-rounded masterpiece. This is not something I would personally wear, but something I would definitely recommend to anyone who wishes for a spicy fruity scent that can be wearable at any occasion.

This perfume really took me on a journey... The first impression already evokes various images in my mind... a compote of dried plums refined with rum and cinnamon... vigorously stirred, and a syrupy sweet veil comes forth... the whole thing is simmering on an old stove fueled by wood! I perceive slightly smoky notes like a fine tobacco rising to my nose... The entire ensemble concludes with resinous sweet balsamic tones! Intense impressions that gently glide away, making you want to spray it on again and again... Rarely does a perfume manage to tell such stories that I love to listen to over and over!
