Great Pirate
Excellent parfum of Atkinsons, based on rum, vanilla and cocoa, which however may fall somewhat short for those looking for something more powerful and strong.

Explosive start of dry, very strong and alcoholic rum, very promising. After 5 minutes this note is going down in intensity and leaving a sweet unisex aroma of vanilla and cocoa powder, quite linear until the end.

Perfume quite original, I do not find great resemblance to any other, brings me some vague reminiscences to Sorriso of Profumum Roma. Very pleasant to wear, versatile and suitable for spring, autumn and winter.

Moderate intensity.
Medium-low trail.
Duration: 4-6 h. projecting decently. At skin level I can feel it 8-10 h. without problems.

Former Pirate Finds Zen
I must admit when I first bought this, I was expecting something that would conjure up images of Captain Jack Sparrow. Something overtly boozy, daring, and dangerous. Atkinsons has this marketed as having been inspired by Sir Francis Drake, an “English gentleman pirate.” I’ve seen some reviews that devolve into debate about whether or not he was a “gentleman” or simply a plundering, murderous pirate. I must admit I’ve no opinion on that. I’m not quite familiar enough to make such commentary and I’m here for the fragrance, not the inspiration beyond thinking “gentleman pirate” versus a slurring, law dodging Jack Sparrow type.

To my nose, I can see the inspiration of a “gentleman pirate,” going further this conjures up images in mind of an aging former pirate in retirement. He looks back on his life, seeks more meaning and wisdom, meditates regularly, and seeks out a zen consciousness.

As someone who imbibes alcohol a handful, or less, times per year, I’m not really drawn to overtly boozy fragrances. At the opening on skin, I do get quite a bit sweet rum which is just perfectly balanced in my nose’s humble opinion. It’s not something that I’d wear and be worried one may think I had just had a drink or were sweating out alcohol from the night prior. It’s a perfect level of booziness in fragrance for me. After the initial blast that lasts on my skin for 15-30 minutes, the fragrance becomes rounder, fuller, and more pleasing than the initial sweet rum blast, the Jasmine and Heliotrope offer a powdery, sweet, and indolic mix with the rum. It gets softer. The retired pirate began his meditation practice, wanting to find a path to counter some of the chaos his prior life of plundering brought about.

Into the mid, the cedar, geranium, and cocoa bean really begin to reveal themselves. The geranium supports the sweet aspects of the opening, while sweeting up the cocoa revealing itself, while the cedar provides a comforting woodiness lingering behind the cocoa as it begins to lead the charge off my skin.

The vanilla began intermingling with the cocoa as the dry down took hold, and once into the full dry down, the patchouli supports the cocoa and I’m assuming it’s the vanilla that seems to go the leathery root - one part sweet gourmandy vanilla, and an equal part vanilla in its raw form with a leathery aspect, while the heliotrope continues to push a powdery aspect. The pirate has seen, accepted, and embraced a path of correcting course, has become less abrasive, and used his life experience to counsel other younger would be pirates to steer course to a gentler more gentlemanly path devoid of drunken plundering.

From start to finish this fragrance tantalizes me. There’s something uniquely comforting I find in this fragrance and in my collection it’s quite unique. When the dry down really hits and it’s a powdery sweet cocoa overtop a soft suede leather with the lightest hints of leftover rum in the background, it’s just magic to my nose. I wore this for the first time in at least a few months a few days back and every time I smelled my arm or caught a wiff of it in the air, I couldn’t help but let out a comforting sigh.

Atkinsons as a whole has left me in awe at times. From seeing the prices these can be had from discounters, I must admit I’ve been quite amazed they don’t get more love in the fragrance community. While 90% or so of my collection came from some bulk purchases from someone where I paid a fraction of discounter site prices, I would highly recommend several Atkinson’s offerings based on pricing. I believe they punch above their $ weight class and deserve more love. Particularly this, His Majesty the Oud, 44 Gerrard Street, and 24 Old Bond St Triple Extract among some others.

Treasure chest found
Considering the main notes in Pirates' Grand Reserve, rum and chocolate, happen to be two of my favorites this fragrance was always going to be a pretty safe bet for me. And indeed I happen to love it; it's sweet, boozy, gourmandy and grown up, a permanent presence in my winter rotation.

That's not to say the fragrance is without its problems: it would have been nice for the rum note to last longer than 15 minutes, both longevity and projection could be better and the price... well, unless you end up loving the juice madly it's going to feel overpriced since there are similar fragrances in the market available for less money. Still, whenever I spray some Grand Reserve it brings a smile to my face and makes me feel for a moment like an intrepid Caribbean pirate. Hard not to love that.

When the pirate freezes his butt off on the ship in autumn, he drinks rum to warm up!
Hi folks, I'm back. And yes, I know, and you're groaning again. Or complaining, depending on your mood, just because I'm here again. Meanwhile, I've reduced my presence here to about two, at most three times a week, but no, I probably have to comment… PER MONTH! Do you really want that? :D

Anyway, I recently tried Pirates' Grand Reserve. No, that's not the name of the new Pirates of the Caribbean film, but the fragrance from Atkinsons from 2017. Although I wouldn't mind seeing a new Pirates of the Caribbean film again, especially one with Johnny Depp, which probably won't happen since the new films are supposed to feature Margot Robbie and Disney has written off Johnny Depp due to his marital problems (so he won't even appear in a supporting role...). One more reason for me to hate Disney after they messed up… uh, ruined Star Wars, although they did manage to create something really great with The Mandalorian series… but I'm not here to talk about Star Wars, which by the way I haven't done in SO LONG, but to share my impression of this pirate scent.

After all, it's from Atkinsons. Maybe not everyone knows this brand, but I would recommend trying Atkinsons fragrances from time to time, as they have some really nice scents. Well then, let's get started.

The scent:
The scent doesn't really start with the notes listed in the fragrance pyramid. Instead, I initially smell smoky notes and leather, then a bit of rum and vanilla. The combination is okay, even though the leather somewhat distorts the Caribbean feeling, doesn't it? Regardless, the scent is still pleasant.
Later, the vanilla is more prominent, but I still smell smoke and leather, although now a bit weaker than at the beginning. Rum is now only present in a rudimentary way, which is a bit disappointing, as I actually quite like alcoholic notes in autumnal scents like this one. But the scent still smells nice, and now a bit of cedar is added to the described notes. Additionally, the scent becomes softer and smoother, which could be due to the vanilla.
I'm a bit unsure about the heliotrope, but maybe you can smell it. If I concentrate, I do perceive a slight almondy note, as heliotrope usually can smell… but it could also be that I'm just overthinking and imagining it :D
Later, the scent remains slightly woody, but mainly soft, vanillic, and warm. Leather fades, but comes through now and then. All in all, a nice scent that doesn't really offer anything new, but is still quite lovely, especially for autumn.

The sillage and longevity:
The sillage is quite good, not a knockout, but still not only detectable up close.
The longevity is also quite good, lasting easily eight to ten hours, although of course not with the same intensity, but that's the case with all fragrances.

The bottle:
The bottle is rectangular, becoming slightly curved at the top. It is also flat or thin, making it look a bit like a hip flask. On the front, there is a round indentation where the round label is affixed. The cap is chrome-plated, trapezoidal, and patterned. Everything looks nice, and the bottle feels good in the hand.

Conclusion:
So, even if this scent may not appeal to many, I quite liked it. First, I must say that this scent reminds me of similar fragrances whose names I can't currently recall, so it doesn't smell particularly new or creative, but it does smell good, and that's the main thing.

With its sweet, soft, and slightly spicy notes, it is a rather nice companion for me in autumn and winter, especially in the evenings when going out. And even though it comes across well on cold days, you shouldn't even think about taking a sip from the bottle to warm up, despite the rum note :D
Not to mention that alcohol doesn't warm you up on cold days, even if you see it differently, especially when you're holding a hot cup of mulled wine in your hands :D
(yuck, but enough about mulled wine… this year there won't be any cozy Christmas market visits, which is particularly terrible for me as a big Christmas fan… :((((
But it's necessary, so a speedy recovery to everyone who has caught the illness, I hope you get well soon! And everyone else, take good care of yourselves, okay?)

Yes, that's it for now, you'll hear from me again in a few days… or only in ONE MONTH, it all depends on you, mu ha ha ha ha :DDD

Curse of Akribik
I love this reserve from Jack Sparrow's grandson. And at the same time, I could puke from this scent. How does that work together? Well, don’t ask me...

On one hand, I see fine piracy, with booze, boom boom, masculinity, beard, leather jacket, wooden deck, and a whole lot of vanilla. On the other hand, this Atkinsons annoys me incredibly quickly. So bad that it’s making me feel this way. A really strange stuff. Maybe it’s not made for my skin, maybe I was in a bad mood today, ate something wrong, or am pregnant ;-)... or maybe the scent is just plain awful.

The vanilla chocolate could hardly be sweeter, more synthetic, or more aggressive. It jumps in my face and hits me on the head. Especially in the first 2 hours. It spins in my head as if I crossed over to America with Columbus. I hope this rascal has a different effect on you and you only see the good. I'm going to get a bucket now...

Bottle: looks good in any men's shelf, the Atkinsons!
Sillage: big mouth upfront, more of a crash at the back. A real drunkard.
Longevity: 8 hours of sailing really take a toll on the migraine pathways...

Conclusion: a pirate-like raid. Cannons & rum, sweat & synthetics, leather & woods. Few scents that I actually find very nice annoy me faster. Test extensively and please don’t listen to love-at-first-sniff!

A wearable alternative of Mugler's Pure Malt. Cake, whisky, spices, donut, but more balanced and not so sweet to be disgusting, quite nice.

Rum and chocolate combo. Great but If the blend wasn't so weak it would be amazing.

Atkinsons deserved a praise on this creation. It is not too sweet, but addictive. Like Thierry Mugler A series, once you spray, you love it.

First authentic rum, then subtle, musty-floral notes & vanilla with a certain woodiness.
The name fits.
