There is this spot...
... where a white shirt collar meets the skin of a freshly shaven man. I want to press my nose against this spot and take a deep breath.
We are sitting in the airport lounge, our destination is anywhere beautiful. In front of us are two drinks he has ordered. When I am with him, I can let go and relax. Because he has everything under control. I surprisingly enjoy this unfeminist role, maybe it’s just this fragrance. This scent does not remind one of a young man emerging from the Mediterranean in tight swim trunks. Instead, it evokes the image of a not-so-young gentleman who knows the finer things in life. Who prefers the simplicity of opulence but still appreciates comfort. Who keeps an eye on his companion, opens doors for her, and helps her out of her coat. The goodness of the old school has emerged, leaving behind the unpleasant condescension. He is a free spirit, dressed conservatively and with excellent manners.

One encounters men like James from time to time. Each time it evokes a longing to feel safe and secure at the side of such a man. And from this security, to come into full strength.

James threatens to replace Terre de Hermes as my favorite in the realm of masculine fragrances. Vetiver is my guilty pleasure.

Who is James?
He wants to remain unrecognized for as long as possible. He comes from the esteemed family of Atkinsons. But he doesn’t brag about his last name.
Recently, I ran into him at the airport. After a brief introduction, we became friends.
He is rather the distant type and avoids larger gatherings. Many of you will therefore never get to know him. He prefers to have real friends rather than many acquaintances. Don’t be upset. That’s just how he is. If you do get to know him, he may initially come across as a bit aloof. But those who have won his friendship will consider themselves lucky.

Enough chit-chat.

Yes, James is actually a perfume name.
But my introduction already says a lot about this “guy.”
In short, I would say: It is a wonderfully aromatic vetiver scent.
Not a “sweet-talker,” but something for connoisseurs and lovers of herbal-spicy fragrances.

Often, the first impression is very decisive in our judgment.
And I must admit that for many who test it briefly, this may not be the “chocolate side” of James. A bit of herbiness comes at you, as if you are fighting your way through scruffy underbrush. There’s also a tendency to bring your nose close to the wrist right after spraying to sniff. This is not ideal for the first contact. I find the scent really pleasant when inhaled with a bit of spatial and temporal distance. The herbiness is complemented by slightly sweet aromas, creating a masculine yet elegant impression.
The sillage could be positively described as not overwhelming. Unfortunately, the actual scent impression that I find very pleasant noticeably diminishes after about an hour, although the scent lasts at least 5 hours when sniffed directly from the skin.
The perfume should match the personality. I see it especially suiting mature men over 40. This perfume can fit them well. It is versatile in its application and suits both elegant evening wear and rustic or sporty clothing.
Anyone who gets along well with vetiver scents should definitely consider this “James.” Furthermore, it’s also a good choice if you want a less sweet-spicy fragrance in your collection.
Those who know perfumes like “Encre Noire” or “Sycomore” have an idea of what to expect.

007? No way
Atkinsons. James Atkinsons. Was the similarity in naming to the 007 actor intentional? Of course, the founder of the company was the namesake of the fragrance, yet the first name somehow seems to seek applause. A rascal thinks ill of it. As if one wanted to draw any link to James Bond, which could indeed be beneficial for sales success ;-)

The bottle stands a bit shy and reserved in a showcase at my regular perfumery, already just from a color perspective. Not something that could visually catch your eye, but it’s always about the inner values.

So first, I spray it on, take a look around, let it settle. Then I bring my nose to the fragrance and - well, what actually? At first, I feel disappointment. I have the impression of testing a scent from the last millennium. It could be from the late 70s or 80s. That doesn’t necessarily have to be negative, quite the opposite. But for a fragrance that is supposed to be modern, the result is somewhat sobering from my perspective.

I make my way back to the office and initially forget what I’m wearing. Only after an hour do I start sniffing again, and I have to sniff because James doesn’t make himself known on his own - the result remains the same. For me, it represents the green-spicy-earthy category. Positively put, one could say it’s an elegant, unobtrusive, well-wearable fragrance with slightly woody and minimally fresh accents. Negatively expressed, the wording would rather be: unspectacular, uninspiring, somewhat trivial, slightly old-fashioned, interchangeable, moderate longevity, and even more moderate sillage.

And so James leaves me somewhat perplexed. Although it’s not a bad scent and certainly not repulsive, ultimately it has too few arguments to trigger a purchase urge in me. No man will earn bad reviews with this fragrance, but is that good enough? A fragrance doesn’t have to fog up the entire floor for me, but there should be a certain presence. Therefore, in my view, it’s a missed opportunity for Atkinsons to place a great (fore)name alongside an equally great fragrance. It’s a pity, really, it could have been more.

Would you like some herbal earth, Miss Sophie?
Already with the first spray, a blend of herbal bitterness and a certain earthiness unfolds, characterized by pink pepper and vetiver. The pink pepper adds a slightly spicy note that blends well with the patchouli and vetiver. In the opening, everything has a very clear green-earthy freshness.

What makes this fragrance special for me is exactly this simplicity. There isn't much happening in the development, but what is there remains consistently present and doesn't lose its clarity. After the initial herbal-fresh impression, the composition settles a bit more reservedly on the skin, but remains present with a slightly woody base. The earthiness from the opening continues in a subdued form, merging with the subtle woody tones and providing a dry, almost cool finish.

The longevity is decent - not outstanding, but sufficient for a workday. The sillage remains rather subtle. It is unobtrusive, does not disturb in enclosed spaces, and adapts effortlessly to any everyday situation.

In summary, it can be said: An uncomplicated everyday fragrance with a green, herbal heart and a woody-fresh base. Not a statement scent, but a solid companion - especially when you just want to spray and go in the morning without having to think about your fragrance all day. Those who appreciate green notes, subtle spice, and a natural radiance will likely find this appealing.

"Astera"
I was recommended "James" by Atkinsons today at the local perfumery.

To put it briefly.
So fresh and so clean!
Very fresh, very clean!

In my opinion, it smells almost exactly like my favorite shampoo, Astera by Rene Furterer (Paris).
Pure soap with menthol and a subtly spicy, bitter pepper note.
"James" leans, in my opinion, towards Prada (L'Homme).
Definitely a good and fresh scent for men!
It will surely be well-received, as the lady kept coming back to it and told me how wonderful she thinks the scent is. And this was despite it being a luxury perfumery with significantly expensive products. I need to keep an eye on this!

An exciting and elegant battle between sweet-earthy patchouli and dry-woody vetiver. Sage and violet watch in fascination.

Very typical of those synthetic vetiver scents that have this rubbery green note. It’s accompanied by spice and artificial wood.

A relatively straightforward vetiver profile that sits somewhere between Cowboy Grass and Encre Noire.
Neither new nor innovative at all.

Starts off fougère-like, classically, but quickly takes on the vibe of modern, earthy-woody, vetiver-green scents. Not bad.

Peppery-fresh and resinous-soft, then a dense, not uncharming vetiver-patch-wood base. Clearly synthetic, but that doesn't have to be °°°
