Leafy Bergamot
Continuing on my journey of the L'Art & La Matière extrait collection, I land myself on the most peculiar of the bunch, Bergamote Fantastico 11. This is, without a doubt, a great and highly pleasant scent, but unfortunately it seems there is more going on here than simply bergamot, and I found it to be a bit muddled. You do get a very vibrant and fresh bergamot in the opening, which is positively gorgeous, but as it dries the bergamot leaf note actually becomes very present and highly noticeable. There is just a tinge of a vanillic/resinous note in there as well that makes this extrait present as if it were something it isn't. I believe these extra notes are present to root the bergamot to the fragrance a bit more, as citrus is obviously quite fleeting, but I think they're just a bit too overbearing. The result is something that, for $600+, smells oddly boring compared to the rest of the collection.

For the bergamot fans with well-lined pockets, I can see this one being a win, but for the average wearer like myself, this one is going to remain in the 'decant only' category of my collection. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing unpleasant about this fragrance and it's actually very nice, however for the same experience at a better price, I recommend Escentric 03 which captures the same feeling as this for much much less. As an added bonus, this does also layer well with Herbes Troublantes for those who own/have decants of both!

Photorealistic calabrian bergamot in all of its glory
When I first heard about the Extrait sub-collection from Art et la Matière, I was a little bit skeptical given the pricepoint. I never even thought about getting decants / samples from that collection because of the money involved. At the beginning of 2024, when I bought Fève Gourmande at Holt Renfrew, I was given three samples of the extrait collection. I stashed them away in my little box of samples, in fear of trying them out and (unfortunately) falling in love with one. I'm not rich by any means, although I do recognise my privilege of being able to live comfortably (and I do have a nice collection of full bottles of perfumes). I've never asked myself what is my limit when buying a perfume, but with those extraits, the question must indubitably be asked.

Thankfully, it's not with this extrait that I'll be asking myself the question. Don't get me wrong. It's a fantastic extrait de parfum, a truly photorealistic rendering of a calabrian bergamot transformed into fragrance. It's tart, bright, juicy, citrusy, fruity. It's got that amazing warmth from the amber and a hint of woodiness from the gaiac wood. I do smell some type of sharp green aspect at the beginning. It's a pretty masterful and seamlessly well-blended fragrance. But... I have to say it's not too far from Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria, a fragrance I already have in my collection. Both have similar profiles and although this one has amazing longevity on my skin, I have to say Aqua Allegoria is overall better in terms of quality vs price. I also have to add that because of the gaiac wood, and the undertone of deep, complex and warm woodiness, the perfume leans more masculine to me. I prefer smelling it on my boyfriend, than on myself, while I prefer AA Bergamote Calabria on me.

I do have to say I'm pretty relieved I won't have to empty my wallet for an extrait. Something can definitely be said about the price of this extrait vs what you're getting and willing to pay. I've seen both sides of the argument. If you're one of the few lucky ones who can spend this much money without batting an eye and have a deep love for fresh, citrusy fragrances, then go for it. If you're part of the mere mortals like me, you might find solace in other citrusy fragrances like I have with AA Bergamote Calabria. One extrait down, a few more to go ...

How can a lemon smell so good?
Of course, citrussy fragrances can start with "Kölnwasser" the so called Eau de Cologne with Neroli and Petitgrain and go up to the Guerlain Bergamot Fantastico .. both in longevity and price.

What can be said about this smell, it is quite unique but also familiar in the same time, the bergamot will steal the show, the petitgrain makes it stable and the amber keeps things cool.

Longevity about 16 hours, with one shower and many times washing the hands.

By no mean the price is for us, the mortals .. but for the selected few which will get one of these bottles, it will be a scent to remember.

A Splash of Summer
A fragrance that smells like bergamot (well, it's called Bergamote Fantastico after all!) and lemon.

It’s a classic citrus scent: fresh, crisp, and perfect for summer. There's also a subtle woody base that becomes more noticeable as it dries down.

It smells really great, but in my opinion, the price is a bit over the top for what's essentially a fairly classic citrus fragrance.

A Touch of Italian Sun and a Dance Between Freshness & Elegance
Well, I finally got to receive the Bergamote Fantastico Extrait 11 this week and I must say that this noble, albeit overpriced drop has pleasantly surprised me, as it is somehow multifaceted, even though there is a very clear direction and focus pursued with the Extraits.

What do I mean by that? Let's get into Bergamote Fantastico Extrait 11:

- The scent is a real freshness explosion upon the first spray, which automatically catapults you into beautiful Italian landscapes, where you let the sun work its magic on you early in the morning. Of course, the name also reveals the main actor of this fragrance, namely bergamot. However, it does not just stand as a simple accord, but as a multilayered experience. The bergamot smells so authentically good that you genuinely feel like you are cutting into a fresh lemon; not a bitter-sour one, but a wonderfully fresh one.

- After that, the bergamot gradually fades and a slightly woody, minimally ambered, marginally but really marginally floral drydown emerges, which dances with the bergamot. Yes, even though the bergamot and this absolute freshness gradually fade, the core note remains for a long time, and I feel that this must come more from the bergamot leaf, as it is somehow fresh but also slightly greenish, and floral-herbaceous.

- I find the longevity to be very good actually, surprisingly positive for a freshie! The scent really lasts a long time, even though the initial freshness eventually dissipates, you get a nice base, nothing groundbreaking, but good :) The projection is also very good for a freshie at the beginning, then, typical for freshies, it becomes closer to the skin, but still quite acceptable. In summer, the scent should work even better :)

Overall, a nice, fresh fragrance, which is already very much at the limit for the price tag, I must say :D It is a wonderfully crafted bergamot that has been implemented brilliantly, but to spend so much money on a freshie, well, you really have to be a Guerlain lover.

The most photorealistic calabrian bergamot bottled up as a fragrance. Fresh, citrusy, tart, and juicy with a hint of woodiness and warmth.

A pure and elegant citrus scent with solid longevity. Great quality, but overpriced for what it offers. Lovers of bergamot will still enjoy

Positive surprise, I’m not a fan of Bergamot normally. This is tender and soft, not sharp nor crisp at all.
Great with Vanilla Planifolia.

It had me in the beginning... Green, crisp, slightly bitter Bergamot. But the base is so incongruent and unpleasant to me.

A rather bland bergamot with metallic
woody notes.
It feels masculine,
and I don't particularly like it.

herb-fresh bergamot, including the slight bitterness of the leaves, gently ambered and rounded off with a noble guaiac wood touch...

Initially zesty bergamot like EdC Imperiale. Unfortunately fades quickly and becomes citrusy-watered down. Price: scandalous (550 €/50 ml).

It briefly flashes what could have been beautiful. Then a slightly piercing (artificial?) wood base clogs my sense of smell.
