Le Mâle in Blue Jean Paul Gaultier 2026

Why people hate this is mind boggling. This one smells great. It has that Le Male DNA in the background. I find it similar to the original Le Male. You can definitely see the lineage.

To me it's most close to, a favorite of mine, Armani Code Parfum. Its ArmanI Code Parfum with the lavender turned down a bit and Anise added. Where Armani Code is pretty linear. This JPG really changes throughout the wearing experience - giving you Anise 'Arak' boozyness in the drydown. Scentwise, to me, it has a better scent ..than Code but the sillage and projection is less.

Le Male In Blue takes the classic Gaultier DNA and slaps it with a high-voltage shot of star anise. That instantly recognizable lavender opening is right there, but it’s hijacked by a crisp, liquorice-tinged kick that gives it a seriously punchy, electric vibe.
As it dries down, the sharp spice cools off into a smooth, resinous benzoin warmth. It trades heavy vanilla for something sleeker, moodier, and a bit salty-sweet think the original’s cooler, spicier sibling who stays out past curfew.
With solid seven-hour longevity and project-across-the-room performance, it’s an absolute winner if you want the classic Gaultier style with a massive anise upgrade.

I saw some other reviewers claim that this is like a fresh Le Male Le Parfum. They are in fact correct. Or you could take the OG Le Male and replace the mint and orange blossom with anise and make it more modern. It smells incredibly good in the air. Projects well with good performance. Limited edition so check it out before it disappears would be my suggestion. Fantastic flanker!! I ordered a 4.2oz as soon as I sampled it.

I admit, for several years there hasn't been a Le Mâle Eau de Toilette in my cabinet, neither the original nor any other from the line. Not out of aversion, not out of defiance, but rather out of this mix of saturation and respect. We had experienced a lot together, we knew every facet. The sweet, lavender-infused projection, its often raw material-related changes, and actually everything had been said, or at least I thought so.

A few months ago, JPG launched a big campaign for a new bottle. Everyone who wanted to participate was invited, which turned out to be quite clever in hindsight, but more on that later.
Then the first fragrance notes and the name appeared: "Le Male in Blue | Jean Paul Gaultier" and I was pretty excited, as I am an absolute lavender fan. Added to that were anise as the opening and benzoin resin as the base. I imagined a modern, maritime, perhaps even somewhat minimalist interpretation of the classic. But more information didn't leak out at first. The irritation grew larger, as there was NOTHING. Nothing, nada, zilch, no opulent notes pyramid, no dramatic tension arc, but also no obvious reinterpretation of an already significant icon in the perfume world. It seemed almost restrained. And that made me a bit anxious for a moment. Then the release came, and I saw the first reviews on YouTube and here on Parfumo and thought, "…oh my God".
But yesterday I received my sample from a dear Parfumo friend. I could finally test it myself, and what can I say, all my doubts were cleared up for me personally.

At the beginning, a sea of lavender immediately washes over you, caught by a fine, fresh anise note. The anise note slowly but steadily bids farewell, revealing the original DNA of Le Male. But it is not overly sweet; rather, it remains relatively fresh despite the disappearing anise note. Unlike Le Mâle Eau de Toilette, here they opted for benzoin resin in the base, which is a very good choice in combination with the lavender. And yet, a fine-spicy, amber-tinged vanilla note resonates throughout the entire fragrance journey. It is certainly not a beast in terms of longevity and projection, but it does its job damn well. It is the typical "daytime fragrance," which is absolutely fine, and it radiates but does not overwhelm your surroundings, making it a really good everyday scent… just like the original has been for years. "Le Male in Blue | Jean Paul Gaultier" does not smell like a desperate attempt, and finally not like a calculated "We're doing it a little differently and calling it Parfum Elixir Absolu Extrait." Instead, it remains surprisingly clear in its identity. The lavender is at the center, clean, underlined with fresh anise, and with a subtle, creamy warmth in the background. It is not a cotton candy explosion, nor a synthetic sledgehammer. Rather, the fragrance feels like a confident reduction to the essentials, with a really very good subtle depth. It carries the heritage of the original without copying it and without trying to reinvent it awkwardly. The crucial point is not that this fragrance would be revolutionary. Spoiler: It is not. I believe it is not supposed to be. For me, its strength lies in knowing exactly where it comes from. It does not change the DNA; it simply illuminates it from a different angle. You immediately recognize that you are in the world of "Le Mâle (Eau de Toilette) | Jean Paul Gaultier," but you simultaneously feel a fresh breeze that makes it all feel absolutely contemporary. Gaultier has given the sailor shirt a new cut without transforming it into a completely different garment, aiming for modern intensity.

And here, of course, a little jab towards Dior is worthwhile. The new Dior Homme Parfum (2024) was for many lovers of the line a moment of collective furrowing of brows. Not because the fragrance was poorly composed per se. The problem ran deeper. Dior Homme Parfum (2014) was for many a masterpiece. It promised continuity, quality, and above all, identity. But the implementation into the new, or as Dior proclaimed it, "into modernity," felt like a break for many. When you take an iconic fragrance and give it a new personality under the same name, you are tampering with an emotional memory. And that is precisely what is risky. The original Dior Homme DNA was simply beautiful. It had character, edges, and recognition value. Those who loved it did so for exactly that reason. But then, when a noticeably altered interpretation appeared in 2024 under the same prestigious title, it felt to many not like an evolution, but like an alienation. It was a bit like remaking a cult film, using the same title, but completely rewriting the main character. Technically perhaps well done, but emotionally a slap in the face to the fans, and to this day, no one really knows what Dior was thinking. What is even more surprising is who created this change… right, the very Francis Kurkdjian who in 1995, together with Jean Paul Gaultier, created an icon of the fragrance world, both in scent and design.

Gaultier, on the other hand, chooses a different path with this release. The name remains untouched, but the legend stands firm, and the new creation gets its own subtitle. "In Blue" signals from the outset: This is a variant, a facet, and a complement. Yes, some are surely grumbling the word flanker under their breath again, but in the end, no one is deceived, no one is served a completely different fragrance under a familiar label. I found the advertising campaign around the bottle design fantastic and simply perfectly staged in a Gaultier-like manner. It is an honest approach to one's own history.

In conclusion, there remains an almost ironic takeaway. The very brand that has been playing with sailor shirts, body bottles, and winking provocation for decades proves here to have a greater seriousness in dealing with its heritage. And the venerable house of Dior stumbles with a supposed modernization.
Perhaps sometimes that is exactly what the fragrance world has forgotten: Not every legend needs an update. Sometimes a new perspective is enough. A new color. A hint of freshness.

And therefore, for me, this thought remains in the end: Gaultier does it right, what Dior did wrong. They do not squeeze new juice into a great name. They simply give it a few new nuances and let the icon be an icon in peace.

The classic Le Mâle Eau de Toilette was my very first fragrance that introduced me to the world of perfumes. Why do I mention this? Because with "Le Male in Blue | Jean Paul Gaultier" we return to the origin and connect the old and the new. For me, it's a blend of Le Mâle Eau de Toilette and Le Mâle Le Parfum. Really well done, and it connects fans of both worlds.

Why do they call it in Blue? I assume because the OG was light blue. However, this has nothing to do with a blue aquatic scent. Just a heads up for anyone who assumed that.

On one side, we have the classic lavender note that stands out clearly and is embedded in a base of benzoin and tonka, which you know from the newer versions. This makes the fragrance overall brighter and it loses some of its heaviness.

As a fan from the beginning, I naturally like this and find it to be like its grandfather, an all-rounder that you can wear daily without overwhelming those around you.

PS: I actually voted for the white falcon, but what’s not there can still happen, and in the end, "Le Male in Blue | Jean Paul Gaultier" turned out well.
