Old School Aldehydic Floral Green Oakmoss Chypre
Yes, that's a mouthful, and CLIMAT, from the Lancôme La Collection reissue of a series of the house's classic perfumes, is a noseful! Oak moss may not be listed in the official hierarchy of notes, but it is patently present and explicitly named among the ingredients on the box: evernia prunastri. That's right, not evernia furfuracea, so oak moss lovers lamenting the substitution of furfurfacea for prunastri said to be necessitated for compliance with IFRA restrictions should definitely consider seeking out the coffret of four of these .5 ounce perfumes in beautiful bottles and a lovely white box display.

Wearing CLIMAT is like taking a trip back to a time when popular perfumes did not fall into the category of either sweet patchouli or sweet laundry or shampoo scents. CLIMAT is a complex and thoroughly composed perfume. The aldehydes are just as bright as the oak moss is gray and fuzzy. Adding to the complexity, a bountiful floral bouquet lies at the heart of the composition, and everything is held together for a very long time with a substantial base. Because of the aldehydes, CLIMAT manages not to feel too weighted down, but it is still densely grayish green. The drydown becomes slightly soapy, also a classic touch.

I've seen reviewers compare this perfume to Amouage DIA and GOLD, but really CLIMAT is much more of a floral green chypre than it is a floral aldehyde perfume. It's strictly classic and means business. Only adult perfume users need apply! Wearing this beautiful creation every now and then is a great way to connect with perfumery as it was once done, before the advent of mass launches and minimalism. This perfume was not composed in a week.

Purity, Antiquity, Rarity In Today's World
Old-time aldehydes tinged with smokey soapiness open Climat. This is not a "today" perfume or a "foodie" fragrance, this is a mature perfume, an experience into perfumery on how it used to be done. Some very old, quite vintage Avon perfumes from their beginnings have this opening, such as Moonwind in the original packaging of the tall blue glass cylinder.
Civet and wood are strong also, while it lasts. Head out to a used book store in some vintage garb wearing Climat on a Saturday afternoon and you'll feel at ease with your world. This is a choice of an adult perfumista who has tried a world of perfumes, one who has stepped amongst the florals, the chypres, the gourmands, the woods and so many others. Climat is for one who understands vintages in their purity. But also appreciates them for what they bring to their lives.
This is a combination of aldehyes, civet, woods, vetiver, florals, mosses, powders and others that blend together in such an old-fashioned manner that it is a perfume that should be experienced. Spraying it on creates such a perfume aura, almost one of antiquity, one that is unspoken of in these fruty-floral days.
Is it old-fashioned? Or is it a perfume for the mature nose? In doing a comparison of Moonwind, I found that vintage Moonwind and Climat(La Collection Fragrances by Lancome) were very difficult to tell apart. The smokiness of Climat, the vetiver and the soapiness lingers throughout in such a classic well-mixed manner. For me, this composition sadly fades quickly. Two hours later, it was gone. But the experience was not, and that I appreciated.
This is a perfume I would pull out infrequently. When I am tired of everything else, and I seek something that reminds me of ball gowns, my college sorority formals, of dancing under the moonlit sky I'll think of reaching for Climat. It's sophisticated. It's mature. It's elegant. It's a completely different experience.

Capable of creating a special atmosphere
When I brought the bottle to my nose, I felt shades of rose and jasmine, but they were elusive to me. When I applied the scent to my hand, I smelled lily of the valley, jasmine, violet, rose, peach and bergamot. The aroma begins with soft floral and fruity notes with the addition of citrus sourness. The middle reveals aldehydes, rosemary and tuberose. The aroma becomes fresh, with notes of wax, subtle pine and not much sweetness. At the end, musk, sandalwood, bamboo and vetiver begin to smell. The scent ends on woody herbal notes with characteristic bamboo and smoky undertones.

I have to repeat myself...
I am very pleased to have snagged a mini of the original bottle shown above from Ingepetras almost inexhaustible supply. I am repeating myself for the umpteenth time, but Climat is indeed a perfume from the good old fragrance era, when perfumes were made for decades and not just for a season.

Climat also has something extraordinary, as the aldehydes do not appear as usual in the top note, but instead help the heart of tuberose and rosemary to shine. The top note with its floral notes seems relatively ordinary - just a floral scent. Elegant, but not really extraordinary yet. But then it becomes spicy, almost heavy but not sweet. Upon entering the base, Climat reveals its sensual, very feminine side, and with very good longevity.

Climat shows no change in character throughout its progression, but a clear transition from floral to floral-spicy to floral, woody-animalic. So there is no danger of suddenly wearing a different perfume after a while than the one you initially sprayed. While some may find that exciting, I prefer it this way. And one more repetition: It’s a shame that Climat is no longer available today.

A Picture from the Past
Turandot, you speak to my soul. Back then, when fragrances were made to last for decades. I experienced a piece of that time.
As a native Russian, I remember from my childhood how my mother was so happy - a perfume for her birthday. No, not just a perfume, THE PERFUME! There were only two - Chanel No. 5 or Climat. Both were incredibly hard to get, and if you managed to snag one, you were simply overjoyed!
To wear a piece of France, yet to be something different from the others with their creations from Nowaya Zarya or Dzintars (Riga), which were also very good.
But Climat, in particular - that was an explosion of feelings, concentrated happiness! Floral, spicy - spicy, slightly woody - you somehow have it all! You felt like a lady in an evening gown at a gala dinner, even if you were just invited for a birthday celebration.
Climat was cherished, always kept nice and dark and cool in the bedroom cabinet, where of course I discovered it. And naturally, a few drops were always stolen, which of course was always found out.
But at some point, it was simply gone. Mom was sad. In the 90s, there were a few new discoveries, but Climat always remained THE PERFUME! And when you encountered it again in the 2000s, you were shocked by the change.
That's how you might feel when you see your first love again after years and think - Wow, you were so different back then. Where is the joy, the depth, the strength? The liveliness? My nose can't be deceived, I've smelled this fragrance hundreds of times, THAT is not it!
Oh well, some things you just have to part with. Still, Climat remains one of the most beautiful, elegant, and timeless fragrances I have ever known. A little photo in the album, where I was so young and on the back it says "Forever Yours," sprayed with the scent and never sent to the beloved.
I didn't dare. Now it's over, but I have my memory, the earth keeps turning, and life goes on.

A little musk bomb, beautifully creamy and floral.
A light hint of animalic notes, rounded woods, subtle spice.
Very smooth and supple.*

The ideal climate for unusual flowers, delicate dry woods. Subtly underlined warmth and animalic notes. A perfume without mood swings. Fine!

Really great chypre with bold aldehydes, daffodil, and lily of the valley, plus fresh-green accents from a truly amazing vintage (1967).

It has a soapy-floral-spicy-greenish quality, can't pick out anything individually. A strong scent from the past, good, but not for staying.

It plays in the same league as Chanel No. 5 for me, just more beautiful, spicy, and interesting. Is it okay to say that?

An uncomplicated, cheerful companion: lightly fruity, with early summer flowers and an interestingly arranged animalistic base.

A scent from the old school, you’d want to call it Eau "Parfum" too, it’s that good. Fine. Elegant, understated, cool. Complex. Good.

Fresh, noble - soapy, floral, unsweet. Timeless elegance, enchanting, great! Could be the predecessor of Dia Woman/Amouage :)

A guest appearance of a cold spring morning, mist over flowers, the almost-night frost transitions to a warm day. Followed by a cool, earthy evening.

A scent of the flower bed in the morning dew, caressed by the cool wind. A timeless classic. Beautiful for dreaming.
