Oddly comforting

I received a sample of this fragrance from Sephora with my order this month. It was a great surprise. I had read several reviews online in regards to the fragrance, but most of them compared it to potpourri.

I totally disagree.

This is a very warm, woody, and inviting fragrance with a hint of smoke. It’s totally “autumn” for sure, I definitely would not be wearing this any other season. There’s something a little bit sexy about it, maybe the pepper? The frankincense? I don’t know but it’s a very nice, comforting, and somewhat sensual perfume.

Also, to note, I don’t normally wear woody fragrances. This is a shock to me that I like it as much as I do, which goes to show me that what I think I don’t like isn’t always the truth. I love this one.

I would definitely consider buying a large bottle. My husband also enjoys it.

Autumn scenery – through a dirty window of a locked room in a derelict house

I spray it once and immediately get the full picture of what's in store for the next ~3 hours of my life. A lot of coriander, not much cardamom, immediate overload of carrot seed.

A prominent labdanum backdrop – almost leathery. Like an old book cover half-eaten by time. The kind you could find in an abandoned mansion and get excited for a moment, only to have it disintegrate into dust as you try to turn the first rotten page.

And an unpleasant sweet undertone. Once I notice it, it soon becomes unignorable. I assume that's frankincense, because what else would it be? But it also smells... off. More like frankincense flavored coffee syrup, if such a thing existed. The kind where everything except sugar is barely a gimmick – subdued, dusty, dull.

It doesn't add much to the composition, just makes all other parts of it sweeter. And mixed with the earthy spices and a leathery backdrop, all that does is exacerbate the flavor of decay and rot. I feel almost annoyed on behalf of it. Such a beautiful resin, and you've used it for this?

Don't get me wrong, generally speaking – I am a rot and decay aficionado. Fungi are my favorite kingdom; and I don't shout about my love for the forest from the rooftops only because I can't find words to say that would be safe for work. So when it comes to nature inspired scents, I suppose I can be overly critical...

But I see nothing of nature in this perfume. Fallen leaf piles don't smell like this. Foggy mornings don't. Cold wet sidewalks don't. Chilly air, bright and crisp, doesn't. Autumnal forest, lush and moist and delicious, definitely does not. Every part of this composition is man-made (derogatory). Locked in a room with barred windows. Discarded to rot.

It's a gimmicky tourist trap spice shop at the edge of a dying small town. Every item – dusty and long past due date. Every shelf – half-empty and half-rotted. As you drive off, it slowly fades from view, but the memory lingers. Heavy. Hopeless. If that is truly how this perfumer sees autumn, she has my sincere condolences.

Nope, try again

At first sniff, Autumn Vibes from Maison Margiela is an intensely smoky, peppery amber. Somewhat briefly akin to the splendidly smoky amber crackling autumn bonfire of Sonoma Scent Studio’s Ambre Noir. But then, in the span of a split-split-split second, it transforms into a sour, sulky citrus. Ray Bradbury has a quote along the lines of how for some people, fall is the only season, the only weather, and there is no other choice beyond that. These “autumn people” are full of the dust of the grave, with the night wind in their blood, and a whole bunch of other spooky goth stuff about worms and toads and snakes and the frenzy of souls and sinners and the starlit abyss. Thank you for summing us up so beautifully, Ray! So. Imagine you’re a regular denizen of Mr. Bradbury’s Autumn People Cocktail Bar, and there’s a whole menu of delectable October libations to choose from. One day this tourist shows up, and when presented with the option between the house special smoked bourbon old-fashioned with a wedge of spiced pumpkin pie on the rim...and a screwdriver...this guy inexplicably orders the orange juice & vodka. This is the sad story and evolution of Autumn Vibes. Autumn People, be warned--you’ll want to get your creepy cozy, harvest-season, sweater-weather vibes elsewhere. This one's for the (GASP) Summer People.

A Scent Portrait of Autumn

I'm a little surprised by the low scores. I think this fragrance is pretty great stuff. Autumn Vibes is so evocative of an autumn evening, after a storm. It makes me think of kicking through fallen leaves, London Fog trench rain coats, long walks in the woods and spicy drinks.

I don't get anything very synthetic or any sense of the "rot" others mention. On the contrary, Autumn Vibes has a freshness, like crisp autumn air but without anything ozonic, I like a lot, from the coriander in the opening through the carrot seed notes in the heart. The carrot seed is surprisingly pleasant. It works so well with the frankincense and nutmeg notes. The drydown is soft and woody but has little sillage.

The longevity is average, about 5-6 hours, with the last couple hours being very intimate. I find Auntumn Vibes to be perfectly unisex and good for layering. I don't know of anything which is similar to it either, which I think of as a plus.

Autumn Vibes

First things first — the name Autumn Vibes sucks ass. No matter how much I might like this scent, I couldn’t confidently purchase it and tell someone I was wearing Autumn Vibes. It’s like having a scent called Rosy Rizz or Delulu Dahlia. WHO approved this lol.

Rant aside, I think it’s really quite lovely. It does sit somewhere between Santal 33 and Replica’s own By the Fireplace (BtF). This is neither a dig, nor a boast so much as a casual descriptor. It’s woody and sweet. Tam Dao is my benchmark for cedar scents, and in comparison, it doesn’t have the same “dry woodchips” effect. A little bit smoother, it carries something akin to BtF’s vanillic sweetness that I think might be the muskiness of carrot seed and syrupyness of maple. (This is a shot in the dark, I’ll admit. Not sure if they were referencing maple syrup or if there’s an actual scent to maple leaves and woods. In my experience, there isn’t.) I can’t really clock the other notes like cardamom or nutmeg, even after running to my pantry for reference lol.

I’ve heard it compared to SJP’s Stash, and I’m sitting here with my own bottle and have to disagree. Stash has an aromatic, herbal quality to it. I think it’s the sage, maybe. Autumn Vibes stays sweet and woody.
