A fantastic lipstick scent (from someone who isn’t too fond of them!)
As someone that’s not big on powdery scents, I actually really enjoy this perfume. It aptly named and smells exactly like a tube of lipstick. It’s remarkable what notes can be thrown together in a perfume to create such a photorealistic and nostalgic scent.

While the scent is vanilla forward, it’s not actually very sweet. So if you’re looking for a saccharine sweet vanilla with this, you won’t be finding it. To me, it’s more powdery than it is vanillic, and I think it’s because iris is really the star of the show here.

The performance is moderate on this in both projection and longevity, and I think it’s a a very versatile scent that can be worn year round. It does smell very fancy, but I think you could wear this whenever and it would be fine. I’m happy to have a bottle, but I’m not sure if it’s a scent that I can reach for and wear often. I may decant some to keep for memories, and sell the rest.

Why was this discontinued? Perfect lipstick scent
This is the only heliotrope heavy fragrance I’ve found where the heliotrope didn’t smell just awful on me. It smells like the actual flower, very pretty. I find this a lovely opening, very retro smelling but not overpowering. And YES the opening has a distinct vintage lipstick note that is extremely realistic and, accordingly, nostalgic. I imagine this is what a glam lady in the 1950s would have smelled like! Dry down is a smooth vanilla blend with a little something else, maybe the waxy iris others talk about. I think it’s one of the most perfectly balanced, cleverly constructed perfumes I’ve smelled. I absolutely love it and am sorry it was discontinued.

My grandma’s lipstick
Wow—I was shocked at how upon first spray this perfume literally smells like my grandma’s lipstick. It literally took me back to the 1970’s and I recalled that wonderful smell while I rooted through her makeup drawer.
That lipstick smell is immediate and unless you know what it is you will miss it. It’s quite wonderful! It only lasts a few minutes though, evolving to a fizzy vanilla cherry soda smell. Very warm, subtle, inviting, 1950’s all the way through. My mind is still in shock! I absolutely love it!

I can’t stop smelling myself today and intend to buy a full bottle as soon as I can. It’s truly unique and absolutely incredible!

Sillage: close
Longevity: average
Tester bottle used

My only brand suggestion is to put this magical juice in a lipstick shaped bottle.

… a touch far removed from feminine elegance
On some days, it happens. On days when the memories become overwhelming. She sits at her old vanity and looks at herself in the mirror, sees her sunken face and her tired, watery blue eyes. Then she reaches for jars and brushes and applies theatrical makeup, powder, blush, and lipstick. It may be a bit too thick and garish, but her eyes have long since become more forgiving. She has kept some of her old stage costumes, even though they no longer fit her. Too much liqueur and chocolates to soothe the darkness in her heart. Sometimes she holds one of the flowing gowns to her chest and timidly turns in front of the mirror. And still, she always has - draped in a kitschy vase - flowers on the dresser, just as they once adorned her wardrobe. She always loved how the aromas of lipstick and sweet powder mingled with the intoxicating scent of the blossoms.

Her gaze wanders to the old framed photograph. He was the love of her life - her husband, her lover and friend, her constant companion and protector, her rock and inspiration. She was happy and secure with him, never diva-like, for she always wanted to be just the girl by his side. The marriage remained childless; this one sacrifice they both made for the stage. She missed nothing - back then. Until the day he left her alone. Quite suddenly, after a heart attack. A rift in her life, so deep that it would never heal. After that, her voice became as fragile as her abandoned soul. She closed all the doors behind her and turned her back on the stage. The money was enough for a modest living. She never liked waste anyway. So many years ago. She rarely leaves the apartment anymore for short walks. The world outside her window has long ceased to be hers.

The sound of the key in the apartment door pulls her from her thoughts. It’s the sister from the nursing service. She comes by as always in the late afternoon to check on things. This young thing, so casually friendly, so eager and dutiful, undoubtedly professional. At least she diligently does the shopping and brings her flowers every week when she asks for them. She does need a little help, her old bones and creaking joints are too tired by now. One shouldn’t be ungrateful. So she patiently endures the cheerful chatter that inevitably interrupts her daydream.

Now it is quiet again in the apartment. Only the antique clock ticks reliably and evenly as always. She looks out the window. Outside, the autumn leaves tumble down onto the damp, shiny sidewalk. Dusk comes early in this late season. Tonight, she doesn’t feel like turning on the television. No, tonight she has made herself up. The makeup as thick as the chunky rings. The eyeliner redone. Bright lips. She wants to dream again of the days when the stage still belonged to her. Flipping through yellowed photo albums, listening to the old arias. She has taken the flower vase from the dresser and placed it on the small round tea table. With slightly trembling hands, she puts a record on.

She sits there for a long time, in his old armchair, from which she could never part. The music has long since faded. She should really get up to turn the record over. She will do it, but not right away. She closes her eyes and listens to the steady rhythm of the tireless pendulum clock. I want to dream, yes.

She must have dozed off for a moment. When did the clock stop ticking? She must have forgotten to wind it today. This has never happened to her before. Bright warm light seeps through her closed eyelids. She couldn’t possibly have slept until morning.

This scent. It is still there, even stronger than before. Powdery vanilla, dust-born iris leading the dance of the other flowers, creamy lipstick, soft and sweetly rounded, a little exaggerated, a bit kitschy. Full-bodied opulence, occasionally interrupted by almost girlish moments of fruity cherry red. Always a touch far removed from feminine elegance. How fitting. She almost would have giggled.

Someone takes her hand. It must be the nursing sister. She must have given her something for the pain, for she hasn’t felt so light and carefree in a long time. Please let me keep dreaming.

Whispered words reach her ear, a man’s voice so warm and familiar. She sighs resignedly and slowly opens her eyes. He is kneeling before her. It is his hand that holds hers. Boyish joy sparkles in his eyes and endless love. He is so young. His chestnut brown, full curls shine in the light. He leans towards her, gently strokes her cheek, and kisses her tenderly on the forehead. “You are here.” His smile merges with her smile. He has prepared the stage for her.

She is no longer asleep, and she no longer dreams. She is home. She knows it.

Just another powdery iris lipstick accord fragrance?
During my vacation, I also spent a few days with my parents. Whenever we have the chance, my mother and I take these opportunities to simply go on a shopping spree. So, we did this time as well. Of course, our path led us to "Douglas," as my mother urgently needed a new lipstick. It should be "something between pink (not too pink) and definitely not bright red." All clear? Not for me, at least. Well, lipsticks are just not my domain ;-)
Anyway, there was an older couple standing next to us, both around 60, very well-groomed and with an absolutely positive aura. The lady was also looking for a new lipstick (is it contagious?), and the saleswoman was eager to sell her a bright red one from Dior, claiming it would be a great contrast to her white hair. The lady didn't seem very satisfied, and her husband also appeared less than enthusiastic. And then he said a sentence that I probably won't forget anytime soon because it came straight from the heart: "Erika, please take a pink lipstick again, because that's how I got to know you, and that was the moment I knew you would be the woman of my life." Needless to say, she then chose a rose-colored lipstick (my mom did too, by the way).

What does this have to do with "Replica - Lipstick On" by Maison Martin Margiela? At first glance, nothing, but what ultimately connects them, I will reveal later.

"Replica - Lipstick On" by Maison Martin Margiela had been on my wishlist for a long time (the terms "Lipstick" and "Iris-Concrete" had done their job), before my curiosity could be satisfied through a sharing.

"Replica - Lipstick On" starts pleasantly and subtly vanilla (Heliotrope) fresh (Neroli), but one should not expect a freshness kick here. It is more of a hint of fresh and slightly citrusy vanilla. However, even in this early phase of the fragrance, the first but clear signs of iris and the infamous lipstick accord appear. I like it, that much is already clear.

The iris impression now increasingly intensifies, becoming more tangible without acting like a fragrance bulldozer. Fine vanilla wafts (bright and sensual) embrace the iris, which completely avoids any metallic or androgynous attitudes, and together they form a powdery scent veil of the highest class. Tonka bean and patchouli subtly blend into this mélange without making it sticky or overly sweet. I would describe this as a mature sweetness.
A slight (minimal!) "bitterness" that is permanently present from the heart note (which I don't know who or what contributes to) also prevents the fragrance from becoming too sweet and cloying.

From here on, "Replica - Lipstick On" does not change significantly (for me). The powdery lipstick accord lies softly on my skin and rekindles anew through body warmth.

"Replica - Lipstick On" is undoubtedly a powdery iris fragrance, yet it is not or only conditionally comparable to Dior's "Homme Intense" or "1889 - Moulin Rouge" by Histoires de Parfums, as "Replica - Lipstick On" presents itself much more restrained and introverted.
The most fitting comparison in terms of scent character would be Chanel's "Misia," only that "Replica - Lipstick On" proves to have significantly more staying power (for me). Therefore, I wouldn't simply dismiss it as just another powder fragrance, but rather grant it its own place in this segment.

"Replica - Lipstick On" is, in my view, a mature, timeless, and unpretentious fragrance that, despite its "sweetness" and powderiness, displays a charming seriousness. A fragrance that does not disguise but rather dresses, a fragrance that flatters its wearer, a fragrance that appears natural rather than forced, a fragrance that provides a sense of well-being.
The simple shape of the bottle, the rather sober label, and the color of the fragrance (not girlie pink, but a mature rose between pink and red) further emphasize these impressions.

"Replica - Lipstick On" is therefore, in my view, an absolute test recommendation for all (female and male) iris and lipstick accord fans who like it powdery, but not overly so.

And to return to my introduction, the riddle is now solved: "Replica - Lipstick On" feels mature, confident, and loving, just like the touching couple who were looking for a lipstick but seemed to have already found the most important thing in life.....

For me, this is one of the most beautiful lipstick scents so far. Moderate powderiness, fine iris, delicate heliotrope, warm vanilla. Yes, I like it.

Dark-earthy-warm iris at the start, then tonka-fresh-vanilla pod accompaniment, dark violet bouquet of violets, powdery without sugar.
November comfort.

At first, a perfectly captured lipstick scent - better for me than Misia or Lipstick Rose. Then sadly, a sweet coumarin bomb.
