A wonderful memory
About 20 years ago, I was on vacation in Morocco with my family. I must say that we like to do adventurous things, like cutting straight through the desert with our Fiat Uno only armed with a compass, when the wind had blown sand across the roads, or for the simple reason to go fast.

One day we saw two little boys who were standing at the side of the road and were stopping cars. We stopped, took them in and drove them to their place of home.

When I remember back now, to this day I cannot figure out how to interpret the look on their father's face. Was it horror that the boys went on a ride with strangers, or was it surprise that we brought them home? Anyway, we were invited into a large Bedouin tent which was put up in the middle of the desert. We were offered heavily sweetened tea and sat on piles of rugs. My mom and I received silver bracelets and carpets were promised to our men (my dad and my brother). My mom brought out salted peanuts which were not really appreciated by our hosts. Using "hands and feet" to explain, plus the little broken English they had, they insisted that nuts are sweet and therefore the salt is not appropriate.

This day in the desert is etched in my memory. And this is exactly what "Sandflowers" smells like: Dry heat, desert sand, salt, aromatic notes, and a whiff of sunscreen which was a must for our pale faces.

This fragrance seems to confuse other people - I have already heard "you smell like a caramel biscuit" or "are you wearing 'Sunflowers' today?"

The sillage is amazing ... even after 4 hours, my colleagues in the office could still point out the room where I had been last. I myself can still detect a faint scent of "Sandflowers" on my skin after 6 hours. On clothing, guaranteed to the next day.

Originally I had expected a desert memory association from another scent 'Saharienne' which is a pleasant enough perfume but has nothing to do with the Sahara.

Oh yes, half a year later, rugs were delivered to us by mail.

Juniper-infused Aqua Motu?
Montale SANDFLOWERS evokes immediate memories of Comptoir Sud Pacifique AQUA MOTU. Something about the algae and the sea water. In waves, SANDFLOWERS has a strange oriental vibe to go with the muskiness. AQUA MOTU is even muskier and perhaps more musky than aquatic. The biggest difference between the two is the juniper in SANDFLOWERS, which is quite marked especially the opening, making this creation seem rather aromatic and the algae very mossy and green.

My understanding is that Pierre Montale was formerly associated with Comptoir Sud Pacifique, I presume as the perfumer. The similarity between SANDFLOWERS and AQUA MOTU may not therefore be my imagination! The bottles are similar, except that the Montale version of the aluminum can ends up looking sleek and niche, while the Comptoir Sud Pacifique version imparts the decided impression of being some kind of budget drugstore body spray. Is it just the trinket on the Montale that makes the difference? I don't know exactly why, but I really like the Montale bottles and really dislike the Comptoir Sud Pacifique bottles.

I am not much for aquatic fragrances, so SANDFLOWERS is not really my kind of thing, but anyone who likes AQUA MOTU is bound to like this composition, which is unisex and even leaning a bit toward the masculine side. I consider this to be an atypical perfume for Montale. It seems more like a vacation scent to me. Maybe it should be called SAND DOLLARS?

For sandpipers
Despite its marine aquatic environment, this Montale looks on the one hand moist, but on the other hand dry, like the fine sand on which you walk barefoot.

It doesn't stick to the skin - and you don't sink into it with difficulty.
The air is ozone rich and soft, with a slight salt note.
Spice is also in the air, and something vegetable.
I suppose it's beach oats mixed with yellow flowers growing on the dunes.

I don't notice any algae - although there is a subtle green note.
The dry breeze is cuddly due to sandal, but remains airy.
Also oakmoss does not weigh down the scent, but gives depth and durability without being bitter.

A scent for sandpipers, but also good to wear indoors.

Known algae-aquatic DNA
I still have to submit a review of this fragrance: The Sandflowers from Montale. This fragrance has been in my collection for several years and I'm quite happy with it. Meanwhile, there are really many fragrances with this typical algae DNA a la Acqua di Sale in my collection, including this great "original". Opinions on this salty, algaey DNA are divided and this is by no means just a crowdpleaser. But it sells well and now many brands have a fragrance that goes in this direction. Of course, Montale also has one in this huge range, where there is something for everyone. This brand has not achieved great fame with fresh fragrances, but Montale does have a few good freshies. As an aquatics fan, I also really like this Sandflowers.

In terms of price, this silver range is quite inexpensive for this brand and you can get fragrances from this range for less than 100€ per 100ml. The fragrances come in a simple cardboard box and in this typical Montale bag. Bottle disappoints many as such a cheap lightweight material is used. The weight is a touch of nothing and feels somehow empty, especially since you have no insight. Could have been done better.
In terms of scent, as I said, you get this algae-aquatic note with a subtle spiciness. I always get vacation vibes from fragrances in this direction. In contrast to Profumum Roma, this Sandflowers is a little smoother and goes much more in the direction of the great Salina. The top note of seawater, aquatic notes and algae says it all: aquatic fans are catered for here and you get a great combo of salty seawater and green-aquatic algae. Algae notes are not for everyone and you have to like them. Sandflowers is rather tame and becomes very mild from the 2nd hour onwards with more spice, which goes well with this salty-aquatic note. Juniper also comes through slightly with a gin-like note. The aquatic notes last a maximum of 3-4 hours and then this fragrance becomes spicy-woody, but remains really soft. The wood in the drydown is very soft and the DNA ends sensually and gently. All in all, a great modern release that is quite pleasing without being too ordinary. This fragrance is absolutely unisex and can be worn in many situations, especially on sunny days.
Performance is in the medium range. Longevity is very solid at around 8 hours and the sillage is in the medium range. The first two hours are quite good, after that it is more skin-like. Well suited for sporting activities or in your free time.

All in all, a great summery alternative to those 0815 summer DNAs. You have to like this salty and salty note, of course. Goes down quite well and is pleasing.

In love on Fuerteventura
Here it is, my first review.
The first snoop takes me straight back to a salt extraction plant (what are those things called?) on Fuerteventura.
We stroll along the lower part of the beach on a small rise, already slightly cooked by the sun, with a good breeze blowing.
We are freshly in love.
Algae-like plants - the non-expert suspects succulents - with small marbles grow on this small hill, and it smells of the sea, algae, herbs and sun.
After 20 minutes, we were also done with the salt production and headed back to the car to drive to the north of the island for an unforgettably wonderful day at the beach.
The first impression of the sand flower lasts just as long.
The second impression, the second sniff, takes me to this very beach as the sun slowly disappears into the sea.
This fresh but at the same time slightly sunny smell, after the sun cream (no no coconut, no tiare), the light salt crust and the hair matted by the wind, and some herbs in the distance.
Oh wonderful!
Yes, this sand flower is vacation, feeling good, being in love, MINE!

Epilogue, which should be a prologue:

Sunny day, sandy island, windy, sunset.
I am lying on my boyfriend's chest. He came out of the sea half an hour ago.
Sunscreen, salt, skin, seaweed, remnants of his spicy perfume.
Happy security on a dreamy beach.

Menthol, parsley and non-cloying green coconut. Weak sillage, yet superb longevity. Worth a try.
