A wonderful memory
About 20 years ago, I was on vacation in Morocco with my family. I must say that we like to do adventurous things, like cutting straight through the desert with our Fiat Uno only armed with a compass, when the wind had blown sand across the roads, or for the simple reason to go fast.

One day we saw two little boys who were standing at the side of the road and were stopping cars. We stopped, took them in and drove them to their place of home.

When I remember back now, to this day I cannot figure out how to interpret the look on their father's face. Was it horror that the boys went on a ride with strangers, or was it surprise that we brought them home? Anyway, we were invited into a large Bedouin tent which was put up in the middle of the desert. We were offered heavily sweetened tea and sat on piles of rugs. My mom and I received silver bracelets and carpets were promised to our men (my dad and my brother). My mom brought out salted peanuts which were not really appreciated by our hosts. Using "hands and feet" to explain, plus the little broken English they had, they insisted that nuts are sweet and therefore the salt is not appropriate.

This day in the desert is etched in my memory. And this is exactly what "Sandflowers" smells like: Dry heat, desert sand, salt, aromatic notes, and a whiff of sunscreen which was a must for our pale faces.

This fragrance seems to confuse other people - I have already heard "you smell like a caramel biscuit" or "are you wearing 'Sunflowers' today?"

The sillage is amazing ... even after 4 hours, my colleagues in the office could still point out the room where I had been last. I myself can still detect a faint scent of "Sandflowers" on my skin after 6 hours. On clothing, guaranteed to the next day.

Originally I had expected a desert memory association from another scent 'Saharienne' which is a pleasant enough perfume but has nothing to do with the Sahara.

Oh yes, half a year later, rugs were delivered to us by mail.

Juniper-infused Aqua Motu?
Montale SANDFLOWERS evokes immediate memories of Comptoir Sud Pacifique AQUA MOTU. Something about the algae and the sea water. In waves, SANDFLOWERS has a strange oriental vibe to go with the muskiness. AQUA MOTU is even muskier and perhaps more musky than aquatic. The biggest difference between the two is the juniper in SANDFLOWERS, which is quite marked especially the opening, making this creation seem rather aromatic and the algae very mossy and green.

My understanding is that Pierre Montale was formerly associated with Comptoir Sud Pacifique, I presume as the perfumer. The similarity between SANDFLOWERS and AQUA MOTU may not therefore be my imagination! The bottles are similar, except that the Montale version of the aluminum can ends up looking sleek and niche, while the Comptoir Sud Pacifique version imparts the decided impression of being some kind of budget drugstore body spray. Is it just the trinket on the Montale that makes the difference? I don't know exactly why, but I really like the Montale bottles and really dislike the Comptoir Sud Pacifique bottles.

I am not much for aquatic fragrances, so SANDFLOWERS is not really my kind of thing, but anyone who likes AQUA MOTU is bound to like this composition, which is unisex and even leaning a bit toward the masculine side. I consider this to be an atypical perfume for Montale. It seems more like a vacation scent to me. Maybe it should be called SAND DOLLARS?

For Beach Walkers
This Montale, despite its marine aquatic nature, feels both moist and yet dry, like the fine sand you walk on barefoot.

It doesn't cling to the skin - and you don't sink in heavily.
The air is ozonic and soft, with a slight salty note.
Spices are also in the air, along with something herbal.
I assume it's beach grass, mixed with yellow flowers that grow on the dunes.

I don't perceive any seaweed - although there is a subtle green note present.
The dry breeze is made cozy by sandalwood, yet remains airy.
Oak moss doesn't weigh down the fragrance but adds depth and longevity without being bitter.

A scent for beach walkers that is also pleasant to wear indoors.

Sandflowers - fresh and aquatic? Not for me!
I really liked Dobbs' comment on Sandflowers and was looking forward to a test, as I was sure this scent would be something for me.

What I immediately notice is the slightly oily film on my skin after spraying. When fragrances have this consistency, they are often more long-lasting on my skin, which I consider a positive aspect. I am disappointed by the first impression; a slightly medicinal note hits me, with no trace of sea breeze or freshness. I had imagined it differently. Well, take it easy, I tend to be impatient when the top note doesn't appeal to me right away. This scent is quite unusual; I try to let it affect me and note what I feel. Salty air, damp sand, mud, fine spice, and beads of sweat are the images that Sandflowers evokes. This is not unpleasant, but in a strange way gentle and calm; flowers or berries, which are mentioned in the comments, do not appear to me, or I do not perceive them. Aquatic or fresh, this scent is not at all to my feeling. I seek advice from my husband, who sniffs and says: "Nope, I don't like it." "Do you find it fresh?" "It's not fresh at all, rather dull."

For me, Sandflowers has a rather linear scent progression, changing little; I like the base note with the woody foundation the best. A peculiar scent, I can't say if I like it.

The longevity is quite good, the sillage is in the medium range; I only know the bottle from the photo, Montale bottles are not my thing. I will keep the sample and take it with me to the seaside in spring; there, Sandflowers will be tested again, maybe it will reveal itself to me then.

Thalatta! Thalatta!
The sea! The sea!
One might want to exclaim this when the scent of Sandflowers wafts into the nose. Whether you align more with James Joyce, seeing the sea as a great sweet mother, or with the Greek troops who finally arrived at the Black Sea after the Persian campaign, the sea touches everyone in one way or another.
Regarding the fragrance, I would say that I don't necessarily smell the sea itself, but rather get the impression of being somewhere by the sea. It’s not a vacation beach; there are beach thistles and juniper bushes, along with a lot of wind and spray, the scent of which mixes with the foliage. Most of all, my surroundings have the smell of sunscreen, which I can't confirm for myself. In my opinion, this is not an aquatic, fruity, delicious vacation scent; there has been a serious attempt to convey the impression of beach and shoreline. There’s also a salty note that I can detect.
Sandflowers is quite powerful, and if I'm not careful (never more than one spray), I might even get seasick...

Menthol, parsley and non-cloying green coconut. Weak sillage, yet superb longevity. Worth a try.

My 1st Montale. Totally happy with it. Pure vacation vibe. Salt-aquatic, algae, spice. Just a perfect aquatic freshness. Unique.

In the sand, somewhere far away the sea, seaweed, skin warmed by the sun.
Close your eyes and travel to where the air vibrates.

Cooler, just slightly creamy Aquatic that later becomes darker green, ozonic, and in a darkly refreshing way. Exciting, but not my favorite.

Tingly hot air, the sound of the sea, sand and salt sticking to my sun-lotioned skin... Me: 10, at Costa Blanca searching for crabs.

Ocean scent à la Montale: Linear spicy-fresh, more Dubai beach than Sylt, with oriental (desert) notes. Licorice? I really like it!
