Polo shirts fade! Fragrances stay?
Lacoste... in the 80s you couldn't really avoid the brand, the polo shirts were omnipresent, even and especially on vacation you were followed by them on all markets. Initially sold as remakes from suitcases, they were later sold in stacks and boxes in all the colors of the rainbow in the stores near the beaches. There was something inflationary about it over the years.
The 1984 fragrance was different... it was elevated above the polo shirt army, more sophisticated, independent, the epitome of masculine charm in high society on tennis and polo courts. After all, the founder René Lacoste himself was a promising tennis talent whose "toughness of a crocodile" is said to have earned him the nickname that would later become the company logo.
I recently received a sample of the latest "Lacoste Original", which always makes me happy.
One spray immediately revealed a herbaceous, initially mentholated freshness, a few minutes later it developed a certain warmth (presumably the floral heart notes) and something sweet.
In comparison with the original at the time, however, it lacked the special ingredients of cyphre and fougeré, then sun-warmed green moss in the finish.
Lasting at least 6-8h, lasted a long time. The Lacoste changed little, came across as kind of herbal-candy-like, but I wouldn't want to use the word gourmand here.
The drawback for me is the modern update, which unfortunately has completely faded the original character.
The original base notes with ferny, mossy and green notes are unfortunately missing. What remains is a "Ricola".
The 80s were over 40 years ago after all...
how time flies *sigh*.
If you like it and are looking for it, you will find a herbal-sweet fragrance in the current Lacoste Original. Unfortunately no longer the old-fashioned fragrance. From today's perspective, this one will probably no longer find any nostalgics due to the revision, even if the old crocodile still adorns the bottle, which is reminiscent of that time.
