Decent Enough
The effort I had to put in to track down a bottle of this stuff was absurd. It was no joke when ATH said this was a limited release. When it finally arrived, I was feeling pretty unsure of it. Being a fragrance that was creatively directed by a YouTuber, it had its fair share of hate online. But, likewise, it had its fair share of praise. I can say, right now, that Smoulder isn’t quite what I was expecting.

Everybody comments on the smoke and, yes, it’s incredibly prominent. But it isn’t the gritty, harsh kind of smoke that’d make your eyes water. It’s very sweet, which I attribute both to the sandalwood and to the neroli and lemon in the top, which seem to just round off the fragrance as a whole. For me, it’s a little too sweet overall, but it isn’t something that makes me retch and want to scrub it off immediately. The longevity is nothing short of astounding. The projection is nothing special, but that suits me fine. I prefer to have a more intimate scent bubble. And for those wondering, yes, it pulls compliments remarkably well.

A good fragrance that I’m happy to have, but not one I’d recommend busting your chops to find. If one happens to fall into your lap, wear it and enjoy it, but don’t spend sleepless nights wondering what might’ve been. It’s just good, not groundbreaking.

First ATH I've tried...
This is my first time delving into the Aaron Terence Hughes line and quite often I hear Aaron describe his fragrances as "massively projecting" and long lasting. He certainly isn't kidding about the longevity - this easily lasts 15 - 16 hours on my skin. Whilst the projection isn't massive, it leaves a lovely trail. For me, I think the projection is spot on for a fragrance of this type. I wouldn't want this to shout and fill a room.

Having never tried other ATH fragrances, I can't say whether this is similar to other fragrances in his line, but I think this is a unique creation. I certainly don't having anything in my collection that smells like this, and I can't say I've tried anything that it reminds me of. I think this is a beautiful fragrance and I'm pleased to own it. I find it to have a fairly dominant leather note, with a light smokiness in the background, and a touch of sweetness. I agree with the other review here, this is definitely base heavy. I do detect the faintest hint of lemon in the first 15 seconds of application, but it very quickly disappears.

I'm keen to dig into ATH's other offerings because I'm a big fan of Smoulder. A fantastic release that I can't wait to wear more of in the colder months.

Getting very samey
OK so I bought Smoulder on its release at 08:00 on the 1st September. It arrived the following day as promised. I have never had delivery problems from ATH. First thing I noticed was the 10ml bottle shape has changed, its thinner and longer. This is my 32nd ATH perfume which I buy as a 10ml. I don't need to buy full bottles and I was disappointed because I have bought a beautiful display case for the others and they fit snuggly. Still the new bottle does just fit.
I occasionally watch fragmental on you tube and Chris always goes on about RD Enigma being his favourite. I on the other hand don't find it impressive at all, so I was pleased to see there is no comparison to Enigma.
My problem is that ATH fragrances are beginning to smell very much alike. Its nice don't get me wrong but as usual the heavy accords just devour the middle and top notes. So you end up smelling the heavy accord all the time which of course makes it project but it just smells the same as many other of his creations.
I'm not going to say pass but I do feel ATH creations are beginning to smell the same.
Update: Second day of wearing it and it does remind me of Fan Your Flames by Nishane.
