What was Ms. Salamagne thinking here…
…is she trying to deliberately mislead us?
The name of the fragrance and its association with the "Frivolité" collection initially sparked great curiosity in me. While I expected it to be a dark and woody-opulent evening scent, after ordering a sample kit, I was quickly proven wrong.
I did this, by the way, before I read some of the rather negative statements about it. Fail or not, was it really a mistake to order a sample of this?
It was good that I did.
Why? The scent is completely different from what I expected; yes, I like it very much and find it quite wearable. It starts off quite herbal and green with what I perceive as a very light aquatic note, which confirms the often-cited slightly fishy impression.
This may be disturbing to some, but at the same time, it makes the fragrance unique in a certain way and gives it a distinctive character. I have never smelled anything comparable before.
As it develops, it becomes smokier and woodier before ending in a creamy-soft base. In the final phase, it at least partially lives up to its name. The "Noir"! We remain miles away from "Night" or even "Frivolité".
I see it as a suitable everyday companion for ladies, gentlemen, and everyone in between and outside, to put it in the words of Mr. Böhmermann. More suited for cooler days in spring or autumn, but that’s something everyone must decide for themselves.
On the house's website, the perfumer's inspiration for this scent states that she wanted to create a fragrance with Noir by Night that expresses masculinity and the French art of living.
Well, there is quite a bit of room for interpretation here; is there really "THE MASCULINITY" and also one "FRENCH ART OF LIVING"? Je ne sais pas.
But that doesn't really matter; I like the stuff and I think this fragrance deserves to be championed.
