The Heart of Cuba
The warm, humid wind brushes through the sugarcane. A soft, gentle rustling fills the early night. I sit on the terrace of the old Cuban hotel. Calm settles in the large hall. Every now and then, a quiet clicking of billiard balls and calm conversations can be heard from the men playing at the table. Soft laughter and the clinking of glasses filled with rum are audible. The radio is playing, broadcasting the old Cuban love songs with soothing rhythms.

The large garden is laid out wild and exotic.
The heliotrope is in full bloom, and the wind carries its marzipan-like almond scent to me. The air has become sweet and heavy. The night is starry and the moon bright. It casts its silvery light on the adjacent jungle. The jungle. It spreads its own scent of woody notes and spicy vetiver. The sound of wings breaks through. The birds settle down for the night.

Sweet and bitter is the taste on my tongue from the rum and the cigar in my hand. Tobacco smoke wafts through the terrace and the garden. It is the scent of Cuban nights.

Sweet, heavy, spicy, and tobacco-laden is the warm night. Steps behind me. A tender touch on my shoulder. Followed by a calm, feminine voice that whispers softly in my ear...-Peaceful here!-. And I think,...How right she is!

-El latido del corazón de Cuba es más fuerte en la noche.-
-Der Herzschlag von Cuba ist am stärksten in der Nacht.-

A Visit to the Pipe Shop
My father belonged to the rare species of man who enjoyed shopping.
Especially with me.

This mutual pleasure was always preceded by a long look from him at my wardrobe - resulting in his conclusion that something new was needed.
I gladly agreed.

Especially since we then made ourselves comfortable in upscale boutiques, which I usually hurried past shyly.

The chic saleswomen recognized us as a duo, and Dad was immediately offered a comfortable armchair, along with permission to smoke his cigar while they presented me with original fashion.

I felt like I was on clouds - which were also blue from the good cigar.
We took our time - just as a cigar takes its time.
Not to be compared with a cigarette.

And when the elegant shopping bags were filled for me - then the obligatory detour to the Pipe Shop was due.

The scent in the air-conditioned cigar room was as much an experience for me as the stay in the boutiques.

The tobacco scent was soft, spicy, and exquisite - and we took our time there as well.
Numerous humidors were opened, and there was sniffing - accompanied by knowledgeable comments from the manager.
Not unlike a visit to a perfumery.

But somehow the atmosphere was almost solemn.
Hoja de Cuba captures this dignified gentlemanly mood well - elegant yet casual.
And radiating a certain calm satisfaction.

I hum softly: Oh my Papa...

In the Clove Coma
Oh, how I was looking forward to this scent!

An almond-cherry note in the opening? Bring it on!
Sweet pipe tobacco? Dreamy.
Turkish honey? I would love that!

Unfortunately, my experience with Hoja de Cuba is different from many of my fellow commentators. Hoja de Cuba does not take me on a fragrant journey to the sultry, Caribbean Cuba. Nor does it lead me to stroll through a southern old town or to the veranda of an old hacienda.

In contrast, the perfume transports me to a cramped, humid spice cellar. Here, tobacco leaves may have been stored at some point, and there is a heavy sweetness lingering in the air from somewhere. But the room is apparently only used as a storage for cloves now. Baskets overflowing with allspice and dried cloves are stacked up to the ceiling.
An escape from this small, poorly insulated room seems unlikely.

In the end, the realization remains that the clove contained in Hoja de Cuba cold-bloodedly and ruthlessly eliminates all other ingredients. And those it cannot completely eradicate lie heavily wounded on the ground.

Amarettini after the rain
For the first time since we have children, we are going away for a weekend alone.
We haven't done this for four years.

We chose a hotel right by the sea. Four seasons. Breakfast, wellness, sea, and finally being a couple again, not just parents.
Even during the drive, our faces are glowing because we are having such a great conversation and can't stop smiling.
We are in love, like two teenagers going away for the first time without mom and dad. Yes, that's exactly how we feel.

We arrive at the hotel in the midst of a huge storm. It's howling and raining in torrents. You brought our rain jackets because you are clever, and I married you also because you always think ahead.
Into our matching tourist jackets, hoods up, and off to the adventure.

We walk 10km along the beach, we have so much to say.

Oh, a perfume shop!
We go in, and I discover wonderful treasures; Hoja de Cuba is my choice, meant to remind me of this lovely weekend.

Do you know those round Amaretti cookies that always sit next to the milk coffee cup on the saucer, hoping not to be neglected?
That's what this scent smells like. Cookie-like, a bit of Amaretto. Amarena ice cream sundae. Wintry, soft, and creamy. I don't recognize any of the listed notes in it.
This fragrance is unfathomable, very gentle and special, very cuddly. Sweet, woody, a cherry marzipan dessert.
It is the pure contrast to this rainy, cold weekend. But still so fitting. The contradiction fits wonderfully, and I love to look back whenever I wear Hoja de Cuba.

Maybe the free time and my infatuation have made it a little softer and more beautiful than it actually is, but most things in the world are more beautiful than they actually are when you are happy.

Manolito's Legends
Manolito couldn't sleep
He felt that this night was the longest night he could remember.
Manolito lives with his mother in Montecristo, Cuba.
He listened, he strained to hear, and he tried to smell something.
In Montecristo, there is a small cigar factory, and when autumn approaches, the wind shifts, and Manolito can smell the spicy tobacco remnants.
His mother works in the small factory, and every time autumn approaches, Manolito can't get enough of the morning air. The bitter spicy tobacco and his mother, who prepares breakfast for both of them early in the morning, smells as wonderfully sweet and fresh as only his mother can smell..
Manolito cries, would today be the day he might see his father again on the breaking waves?
These waves that grow so large when autumn approaches, when the wind shifts, these waves that come when he can smell his mother early in the morning.
These waves that took his father from him.
The waves that meant everything to his father.
In the past, when autumn approached, the scent of tobacco, along with the sweet fragrance of his mother, was accompanied by his father's morning aftershave.
In the past, everything was perfect.
Now he listened to see if he could hear the waves breaking. A thunder and a roar. Sometimes a sigh and a lament.
He knew the legend of autumn, when the waves rise early in the morning, just before the sun says Adios to the night on the horizon, just before that, one should see the brave men on the waves, the men who were swallowed by the sea.
Manolito strained to hear if today there might be a chance to see his father.
No matter, the sun would soon say Adios to the night
He quickly got dressed, ran to the sea, he could see the bright horizon, and
He could hear the waves, yes he could see them, he could smell them.
And
He could smell his father, just briefly but distinctly he could smell his father.
The aftershave he had never smelled again.
In the last moment, he noticed his father's wave.
His father was sitting on his board and clearly waved to him.
He was happy, anxious, and he could say Adios.
Manolito, Manolito, manolito he heard his mother calling from afar.
Something grabbed him by the shoulders
Manolito, get up finally, breakfast is ready, the waves have come, you surely want to watch the men. Get up now.

Hoja de Cuba embodies all of this for me.
There is nothing more to say about the scent.
It is wonderfully beautiful, I can even imagine it on some women.
It radiates appropriately and its longevity is great for me, I think it is perceptible for about 5 hours.

It is a warm, cozy scent that can also work in the evenings during summer.

The legend says that little Manolito went to Europe, with the thought of capturing the scents he smelled early in the morning when autumn approached.
Manolito returned to his mother from France only at the age of 38
He probably had 2 suitcases with him, one with clothes, a suitcase full of perfume, says the legend
I hope I haven't bored you with Manolito.

The ideal man cheats on his diet.
Cherry pastries, marzipan pigs, and green energy drinks.
He also smokes vetiver. *

Starts like wood polish (I like that), but quickly shifts to fruity: cherry tobacco with amaretto. Unfortunately, it gets borderline sweet from there.

An explosion of marzipan-like, amaretto-sweet, sugary glittery hairspray for teased tower hairstyles. Tobacco and pepper were out.

Oh so sweet, spicy, almost amber-like, I would say.
Tobacco for sweet-toothed folks, cozy and cuddle-worthy.
But Cuba?
More like sofa.

Great almond-tobacco scent that reminds me of Saturday nights in quirky dives with hand-rolled cigarettes and worn leather jackets.

It smells like a great cherry-almond-tobacco scent to me. If you like fragrances like Naxos or Pure Havane, definitely give it a try. Not a scent twin.

Intense sweet pipe tobacco, unfortunately no hints of cigars. Turkish honey, gourmand, soft vetiver is annoying. A candidate for washing off.
