Under my skin
Elaborate. Artful and detailed, one thinks one would like to translate it. Maybe even "work for it". If one now considers the chords that are mostly considered archetypes of animalism: civet, oud and musk in a pyramid with leather and a - supposedly - lonely violet, then one could expect an animal firecracker. A fragrance that challenges you and your surroundings so much that it is hardly possible to wear it indoors. But far from it.
This BtV starts close to itself. You have to listen to him with your nose. The "missing" top note leaves me with a short medical, then wonderfully smoky oud and some dark leather. The two share the prelude for a good 20 minutes and just in motion already announces "more". Almost shy and really only as speckles in the deep brown sound, the violet finds a place. I can't identify it as a purely floral chord myself. Is it more of a contrasting, very delicate, almost fruity sweetness. Just like early flowering plants after a long winter. It's like rubbing a petal between your fingers. This opposite pole is carried above all by the musk, which in my perception also has nothing typically animalistic about it, but brings along the vibes of the white musk, which also has a balsamic, reserved softness, yet deburrs the clear edges of leather and oud.
Increasingly, above the 1.5 hour mark, the dark brown aura is broken more and more towards some light. We also owe this to Zibet, who gives everything a certain transparency.
The trivia of the missing top note is probably simply due to the three-division of the fragrances, which is usual at BtV. In Elaborate we basically find a fragrance that does not change or define itself too much through the course of its wear. A very honest fragrance that won't enchant you with a top note that left after 20 minutes and that you will mourn afterwards. No eternal waiting for the heart and the base, because all this is already there after a short time and from the beginning.
Elaborate wants to be developed. He's not a classic quick-win. It's a little gloomy and wonderfully smoky and woody. He's not a crowdpleaser. (Which the few statements and comments prove.) He always leaves, but he also needs a stage (YOU) that can carry him and above all wants to. He needs a feeling for dose, because this calm fervor is easily underestimated in its effect, range and durability.
