Dry, orrisy cake spice

Eyes Closed dresses up a dove-grey iris suede (very much like Dior Homme) in a fine coating of baking spices, mostly cinnamon and cardamom. This accord is distinguished in the opening by a remarkable carrot seed material that gives it an earthy, musky ‘cloudiness’ – like someone coming in and smudging all the lines on a charcoal drawing. It smells rather like the dry ingredients of a carrot cake or a Christmas cake before all the booze, melted butter, and sozzled dried fruit get poured in. I like this fragrance because it is arid and unsweet, the richness of its spice mélange untethered to any gooey basenotes, cutting it free to float on the air. I find it to be pleasingly masculine. But it is too intense – almost unpleasant – to smell straight from the skin, and so powerful that the scent gets a bit monotonous after a few hours. That’s why the way you wear this one counts. Like Chergui and Patchouli 24, a discreet dab on the end of your scarf or on one knuckle is enough to scent your entire ecosystem.

WHAT IT IS
The spiced carrot side dish you throw together in a rush for your friend's Thanksgiving party which becomes an unexpected star next to dry turkey, craggy stuffing, and salty green beans. This is a savory-ish gourmand which opens with peppery cinnamon notes, then quickly settles into buttery braised carrots and fresh grated ginger. It's strong for a Byredo with an easy 3-4hrs of noticeable sillage and a lightweight patchouli dry down which can stretch to the 6hr mark. Gets a little loud in warm weather, utter knockout in fall & winter.

WHO IT'S FOR
You just want a little something special for sweater season, but don't want to smell like cotton candy, a speakeasy, or a humidor. You want something unique, a little classy, a little odd.

ALTERNATIVES
Goldfield & Banks' Ingenious Ginger runs parallel in a citrusy fresh direction more suitable for warm weather - if you love ginger, a bottle of each could easily be your only fragrances. On the men's side, Roja Enigma and YSL l'Homme both feature prominent ginger notes, but it's quickly subsumed by the other spices in the blend and neither has the green sweetness of Epinette's carrot.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Most Byredos have a sheer, gossamer-like quality which I find beautiful, but fleeting... and while I'm not usually hung up on projection or longevity, they're expensive for a 1-2hr flash in the pan. Eyes Closed was a shock, an off-chance spritz on a warm June day because ginger and carrot sounded delicious. Two hours later I wandered back to the shop and bought a (small) bottle which has now become my staple for fall. Great stuff *if* you like ginger and carrots.

Hot and cold

Eyes Closed starts out very dry and powdery. The orris and carrot give it a rooty, earthy scent, but also a hint of waxy lipstick. Iris/orris notes can sometimes smell like carrots, too, so I'm not sure where one note ends and the other begins between these two.

The cinnamon is also noticeable right from the start. It's warm and spicy as it should be, and I definitely understand why this is a Christmas scent for some, even though I think there is more to it. The ginger is more subtle, but adds to the spiciness. It smells a little candied to me, not like freshly grated ginger. In the heart of the scent, something darkly fruity unfolds and adds to the festive atmosphere. It smells a bit like a spiced plum compote at this stage, even if nothing in the listed notes indicates it.

Later the scent turns drier again and the patchouli finally shows up, tamed by a dusting of cinnamon and powder.

This has an interesting mix of hot and cold, dry and jammy, sweet and sharp notes. I can't think of a similar fragrance. At times it's a little too cool and bracing for me, but then I find it really cozy again. The cinnamon really makes the scent. I like this a lot, especially for autumn.

Cardamom and cinnamon bomb

Imagine standing in your kitchen on a cold rainy day, the beep of your oven timer going off in your ears. Opening the oven door your body is washed over in warmth, the smell of cinnamon and cardamom overtaking your being. That's what Eyes Closed by Byredo is like on first spray.

Cardamom and cinnamon overtake your senses and radiate off your body. It is comforting and cozy - naming it blanket would have pronably been more appropriate. As time goes on it begins to soften into a powdery and slightly woody orris, the carrot coming through with traces of cinnamon almost giving it carrot cake vibes. Thankfully I don't much, if any, of the patchouli in the dry down just the smokiness of the papyrus.

On me I get about 7 hours of wear time, it projects off of the skin creating its own little bubble and does leave a nice little sillage trail. I was a little worried given the performance of Vanille Antique but I'm glad I tool the plunge.

Decent projection

This fragrance is an orris bomb with a spicy twist from cinnamon. While the cinnamon becomes less prominent in the drydown, it still leaves a warm iris scent.

As someone who isn't the biggest fan of iris fragrances, I find this to be a good option for those who enjoy that note.

If you've found other iris fragrances to smell too much like lipstick, this may be a suitable alternative.

The performance of this fragrance is great, and it has a decent projection.
