Outside Raaawwr, inside Raaaawwr
As a fan of Carolina Herrera from the very beginning, I couldn't help but immediately get and test this flanker "BEASTS" straight from the jungle.
Although I am almost averse to it, I actually prefer the current CH Men (reformulated) over the legendary vintage version.
(Tomatoes are flying...)
The current one is sweeter, which, from my perspective, better caresses and highlights the leather. The vintage version, on the other hand, is rougher and fresher, and somehow stronger.
Interestingly, CH Beasts takes a similar path, as it is also less sweet and rougher than the current "standard" version. So it leans more towards vintage, but with different notes that make Beasts seem somehow spicier, though for my taste, it is also less pleasing and more angular.
I fear it is the violet, cistus, and pepper that somewhat spoil the fragrance for me. Although "spoil" sounds a bit harsh, it is really beautifully crafted. And a scent that will surely appeal to everyone, especially due to the intense use of cashmere wood. Personally, I much prefer the sugary-sweet nature and the smooth "red leather" accent of the original, which makes this fresh-herb version, similar to Grand Tour, just not give me much.
Although Grand Tour is also very leathery, but indeed more austere. In Beasts, the leather is very subdued or even absent, but it is also somewhat fresh and herbaceous.
Okay, with tigers, it's more about the fur than the leather. ;P
But anyone who has always wished for CH Men to be a bit more austere, fresher, and airier should definitely grab this one; it is truly a well-made perfume, with good sillage / longevity. However, from my perspective, it has a lot of competition from its own ranks.
I also want to highlight the presentation: the bottle and box are wrapped in rough velvet, which feels really great to the touch and gives off a truly fine 80s vibe.
That the box attracts dust like a vintage Nilfisk GS80 vacuum cleaner in its prime is just a small downside... :D but it really does look beautiful.
I think a product has been beautifully designed holistically here, with a lot of love for detail, also regarding the fragrance, which, on one hand, follows familiar paths, but on the other hand, still finds a bit of its own trail.
At the end of the day, it is more "for fans," which is why I will probably let my Beast go. ;P
