Feels like the daytime/work version of The One.

Maybe it's the marketing but I think they nailed it by naming this the Grey version of The One because that's what it smells like. A slightly darker, more serious version of The One is achieved by taking out the boozy notes and replacing them with vetiver. Feels like the daytime/work version of The One. Light, refined, pleasant, and ready to work. Leave night/play time for EdT and EdP. It's also versatile enough for cold or warm weather.

Projection is average but longevity is good, lasts all workday.

A scrubber

Don't be deceived (as I was) by the wonderfully fruity top notes. These give way to the awful peppery/sage/cardamom fumes found in The One Gentleman. A scrubber for sure! Great longevity - I just wish it would fade away!

Unjustly slammed and discontinued

D&G made a mistake by discontinuing The One Grey, rather than refining it and reintroducing it as The One EDT Intense (2025). Instead, they decided to release a redundant The One EDP (2025) in a clear bottle while simultaneously introducing the brand new The One Parfum, the much awaited deeper and longer-lasting version of The One EDP (2015).

The runaway success of The One EDP (2015) contributed largely to the criticisms of The One Grey (2018) because the fans wanted an improved version of The One EDP but instead got a fresher and more aromatic version for daytime wear. Grey was also slammed for poor performance when it actually performed better than both the EDT and EDP. So it became overlooked until it was ultimately discontinued in mid-2025.

Grey opens with a bright burst of grapefruit and cardamom, followed with a soapy clean injection of lavandin and clary sage. Some claim they can’t detect the tobacco, but the amber and tobacco combination that The One is renown for comes through distinctly in the drydown.

Certain YouTube fragrance influencers bemoan the discontinuation of Grey when they themselves were less than lukewarm about Grey upon release due to constant comparisons to the EDP. Grey was never meant as an update for the EDP; it was a follow-up to The One EDT, but more intense. What should have been discontinued is The One Gold.

Um... Maceration's Important, Mmmlkay?

This one went and caught me off guard. Weeks after purchase, I was rearranging my (then quite meagre) collection, and went to move this to the back, since it had been SUCH a disappointment that I couldn't imagine wearing it. As I went to move it, I gave it one last sniff, as I always like to refresh my impression of a scent as I'm sorting. And WOW, had things changed.

Evidently, the batch from which my bottle came had not fully macerated before being sent out into the world, because 6ish weeks on my bureau transformed this from "a bottle of vodka strained through sawdust" to this subtle, warm, woodsy creature that I had never encountered before.

As I hadn't sprayed on in some time, I gave my wrist a shot, did the neck dab, and wafted... and there was the grapefruit top note I had heard so much about... and then the cardamom, and then the woods in the dry down... I sat in my room for almost a full hour just staring at the bottle, sniffing my wrist, shaking my head, and repeating.

I won't say this is a favourite or anything of that nature, but it DID wind up in the second row back amongst the bottles (back when my collection was a bit smaller), rather than all the way back, as I was planning on placing it. Furthermore, I am very glad to be wrong here, and even more glad not to be out of the near-retail price I paid for it. I give it a solid 8/10, and a tip-of-the-hat for teaching me about maceration and why it's important.

Lavender and vetiver give this a pronounced woodiness that's quite dry but there's also a sandalwood like creaminess in there too. Not bad.
