Zest Over Wood

Santal Dan Sha… A name that conjures up the warmth of wood, a milky and sensual caress, sandalwood in deep meditation. And yet, the moment the juice touches my skin, it’s an explosion of sharp, biting citrus that takes over. Bergamot? Yes. But more than that, a zesty, radiant burst, far more citrusy than the olfactory pyramid suggests.

Where I expected a smooth, woody embrace, an aromatic wave crashes in instead. This fragrance leans towards a masculine character - at least according to my personal olfactory sensibilities. It has a crisp liveliness, an energizing and assertive presence. It’s pleasant, well-constructed, but to me, this is not sandalwood. Or at least, not the one I was hoping to meet.

No love at first sniff for me.

Wood to my taste

For me as a sandalwood fan, this fragrance is a dream. For me, sandalwood is one of the most beautiful fragrance notes in perfumes. The fragrance starts off fresh and spicy, not harsh or pungent, but rather creamy and soft, even if that sounds somewhat paradoxical. It has a slightly soapy nuance, which I really like here. I'm not normally a fan of it. After 30 minutes at the latest, I can detect the sandalwood in the background, which then gradually takes over the leading role. The individual notes intertwine beautifully, the whole composition seems round and harmonious to me. The fragrance lasts at least 6 hours on my skin and is quite strong, which I find rather unusual for an EdT.
This Armani fragrance trumps my previous favorite sandalwood fragrance, Santal blanc by Serge Lutens. I still love that one, but the Armani has more depth and spice. It's a fragrance that suits my taste and makes me feel cozy and safe in cold, dirty weather and in the dark.

The Santal Dān Shā from the Armani Privé range has a "dry" opening.

It is quite sedate. Cardamom, bergamot and the violet leaf are present and the cardamom is also perceptible over the entire time.

After about an hour, the incense is added, along with the resin and musk. The latter makes the fragrance a little more powdery. Finally, the soft, warm sandalwood, among other things.

All in all, a linear sandalwood cardamom fragrance that is neat and quite pleasant for an office fragrance. You stand out without being obtrusive.
