For men and women
I've only recently delved into the house of Jo Malone, and from what I've experienced so far, I'm impressed. Many dislike the simplistic nature of these colognes, and as a result, Jo Malone has been discussed frequently on our forums as not being worth the money spent. I agree that they can put a dent in your pocket, but I do enjoy them for layering purposes or even to spritz on when I don't want anything too loud or offensive.

Amber & Lavender is a charming unisex fragrance. It opens slightly masculine, with rich aromatic qualities and a heavy dose of lavender. I love lavender and often use it for soothing purposes. I'm also one of the rare few that find the smell of it rather seductive and alluring.

It's not all about the lavender of course, but it does feature strongly, particularly in the opening and the heart. I absolutely love the way Amber & Lavender settles on my skin; aromatic yet oddly clean. It's refreshing at the best of times and very easy to wear.

There's a glorious, subtle hint of mint that really freshens up the composition, also making it suitable for the warmer months. Although I would prefer this fragrance on a chilly day, the options are endless as it's a fairly versatile scent.

The amber accord isn't syrupy nor outrageously oriental like you may expect it to be. Every note in this fragrance is quite mellow and smooth. Patchouli and myrrh only add to this fragrance's beauty.

Another wonderful thing about Amber & Lavender is that it lasts. This can't be said of every Jo Malone fragrance, so I consider it a big plus. I'm surprised that this fragrance isn't more popular. I can only assume that women may forgo this fragrance thinking that it is only intended to be worn by men. I personally think it could go both ways. You'll either buy it for yourself or for your partner.

Aristocratic Archetype
Opens bright with lavender and soap. Continues to wear somewhat medicinal and clean. This feels like an old idea of a clean scent, aristocratic cleanliness, it's what you might have expected classic fragrances from Penhaligon's, Geo. F. Trumper, Truefitt + Hill, Floris, et al. were supposed to smell like, but don't. This does.

I Need a Daisy
Somewhere I read or heard, probably in Hamburg at the Jo Malone store, that these fragrances are those with clear statements. What’s in the name is right there in front. On the Jo Malone website, the description mentions only lavender and amber alongside petitgrain. The other details above come from an article from another source, yet they seem plausible. I came to basil myself, for example.

Right after applying, I initially thought of fuzzy, unripe bergamot, but after a short moment, petitgrain actually seems more coherent; the citrus note is darker and heftier, also oilier than bergamot usually is. Still, a bergamot impression is not completely out of place.

So far, so good; so moving on, so hm. I fear the combination of lavender and eugenol does not work at all on my skin. Lavender alone is often problematic enough, and to add that biting ingredient, which primarily resides in cloves but also lurks in nutmeg and some cinnamon… Oh dear! For hours, the matter oscillates back and forth, hence the idea of the daisy, with which I can pluck petals in the old-fashioned "He loves me…he loves me not…" manner between "It stinks" and "It doesn’t stink."

Throughout the morning, the already diagnosed aftershave quality by the previous commentator emerges, which could indeed be called "quite classic," yet remains airier and spritzier than what grandpa’s waters allowed according to my childhood memories. I’m sure it’s a great thing for fans of classic fragrances to be served in such a light-footed manner.

Amber takes over in the second half. As the fragrance has darkened a bit by noon, its appearance can now be described as "pretty classic." In style, it reminds me of Elite by Floris, which I find more consistent, fuller, and rounder. I certainly wouldn’t buy it today either. Yes, perhaps that’s the best comparison that comes to mind for me as a self-proclaimed non-expert in this fragrance direction. The final touch is provided by the gradual fade of Amber & Lavender throughout the afternoon. I sense musk there, which not only shows a similar character but also has a calm yet confident presence.

Conclusion: It seems extraordinarily British to me. A recommendation for fans of such designed fragrances. I find it a bit boring and intermittently not very pleasant.

I thank MisterE for the sample.

The higher the expectation, the deeper the disappointment!
How I rejoiced when I unexpectedly uncovered the small sample of Amber & Lavender from the large brown envelope. I love the components included: amber, lavender, bergamot, myrrh, and patchouli; just thinking about these beautiful notes makes me want to roll my eyes in delight. Based on the fragrance pyramid, I anticipated a fresh, herbaceous-citrusy start, already underlined by warm notes of cinnamon, a hint of clove, and perhaps even a hint of amber and myrrh. My expectations for this scent were so high...

... and just as deep was the fall of disappointment after spraying it on.
The top note was nearly pure biting alcohol, soon accompanied by a sharp, spicy clove note. The lavender then added a slightly herbal-medical flair reminiscent of cheap aftershave... But I remained patient; the warm notes from the base components had to come at some point... But no, even after 2 hours, there was still nothing to smell from them, although the aftershave stench thankfully began to fade.

Well, I thought, maybe it doesn’t suit your skin chemistry... so I borrowed my sweetheart's arm as a scent carrier: with exactly the same result. And my sweetheart wrinkled their nose in disgust and went to wash their arm... Okay, I thought, the sample might be off, so I noted it on my testing list. What can I say? Even in the perfumery tester, it was the same result.

Amber & Lavender can stay where the pepper grows... it’s not coming near my skin again, that stinker!!!

Gentle scent reminiscent of aftershave
For some time now, I have been eager to test Jo Malone fragrances and I was lucky enough to enjoy my first sniff, and I am thrilled. I generally don't like lavender, but here it doesn't bother me at all.

Especially bergamot and amber are clearly recognizable, with the lavender being very subtle and not intrusive. I find the scent on my skin wonderfully gentle and warm, but very masculine, in my opinion. This is how a man should smell... elegant :D

My husband also said it smells great... is that aftershave *laugh*

Very correctly done resinous fougere, especially in the opening: old-school, lavender heavy and herbacious. EDC performance, weak.

For me, one of the best in the line and the most underrated. Don't know why. This is pretty decent compare to some v. fleeting airy ones.

Lavender is sometimes bitter and warm-spicy, which seems quite quirky for this light blue plant: original and edgy.

Here, spicy-fresh greens come together with fine spices, aromatic lavender, and a generous dose of erotic undertones.

This wonderful pain of short-cut fingernails and biting aftershaves. Now also with lavender!

A fine old-school herbal musk with a hint of smoke, which I would replace and forget for good with "Derby (2005)."
