Poetic!
Christine Nagel at her finest, no surprise she’s been chosen to inherit Ellena’s throne. A charming whiff of sophisticated, mellow, androgynous, hyper-modern, clean yet somehow “mysterious” and moody spiced Oriental orange-infused woods. This is Oud & Bergamot by Jo Malone, a refined, minimalist, very well conceived experiment around the contrast between the aromatic, luscious smokiness of oud and cedar (and suede, I think), and the graceful, pastel, zesty and slightly floral touches of bergamot and citrus, with a hint of cinnamon-like touch of sweet – just as in Fendi Theorema for women, also composed by Nagel. All done with an amazingly well-engineered weightless texture taken to the very extreme – basically, pure thin scented air. It feels like a perfect olfactive rendition of some abstract watercolour featuring harmonic drops and brush strokes of pale orange, pale brown, pale black. All smells even, smooth, airy and pale, yet totally “there” under your nose. It’s like smelling a linen shirt previously sprayed with a hypothetical “true” substantial version of Oud & Bergamot – this is how the actual Oud & Bergamot smells. It’s there, and yet it isn’t. Like the suspended memory of a scent, more than an actual scent, and yet it’s there materializing under your nose. Fascinating to say the least. And it’s all done so terribly right, as all notes manage to smell crisp, smooth and clear, yet subtle.

The scent is very simple actually, basically a fairly linear and “white-ish” sort of musky-suede rendition of (synthetic) oud and cedar tinted with some orange and cinnamon. It’s the way Nagel made it that makes it so special. It takes some guts and skills to take these notes and turn them into an impalpable whiff of watercolour mist (I mean, it takes some guts to do it right and not end up with an ephemeral fart of a constipated princess). More than compelling and more than a scent, a little piece of minimalist art. Obviously not a “bomb”, very subtle but quite persistent, more than one may assume: somehow you smell it around yourself for hours and hours even if it seems disappearing from your skin soon. This close to smelling just dull and weak – and maybe it is, and I’m just overestimating it – but I find it just lovely.

A great potential destroyed by weak performance
Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot is a nice but overpriced scent, but, to be fair, I’m not an ideal customer of Jo Malone’s Oud & Bergamot, and I can understand all the hype behind this fragrance house.

It is also a safe blind buy for almost anyone who is just starting to get into the oud game and a nice twist since it’s one of the rare oud-based fragrances you could actually pull off in the summer.

TOP NOTES
The fragrance starts promisingly strong with a natural-smelling combination of bergamot, lemons, and orange, paired with hints of petitgrain to give it a slight floral touch.

The initial strong blast settles down quite quickly which is a shortcoming of many Jo Malone fragrances which rarely push far from the applied place.

HEART NOTES
In the heart notes, the fragrance reveals more woody nuances with oud being the most prominent accord. I say accord since the oud found in this fragrance is not natural, no matter what Jo Malone sales associates are trying to tell you.

At this price point, there is almost zero chance to get the real thing in fragrance since real agarwood is more expensive than gold these days.

For anyone familiar with oud accords found in popular fragrances such as Tom Ford Oud Wood, or Yves Saint Laurent M7 Oud Absolu.

BASE NOTES
In the dry down, what are you left with is a nice cedarwood, traces of herbal spiciness, and a touch of aromatic quality.

The cedarwood here is a straight Iso E Super molecule found in other superstar fragrances such as Escentric Molecules 01, and Dior Homme 2020.

A scent for a new Richard Curtis film
I don’t mean this in a derisory fashion or sense; but this whole brand just makes me think it was created to fragrance a wonderfully, saccharine and awfully quaint Britain created through the lenses of both Richard Curtis and some lazy Hollywood producers.

You know the kind of place where everyone speaks with that clipped dry but every so sardonic Middle-English accent even the comedic Scottish/Welsh or melanated characters. The place is inhabited by lank haired protagonists and slightly spirited American women.

Smelling this fragrance, for the briefest fucking time, I instantly imagined a young Anne Hathaway bouncing down a typically Curtis-esque London borough getting gawping huffahs, Harrumphs and fussied bosoms from bowler hatted older gents and gussied-up older women.

But mind you you’re going to have bury your face into your wrist or wherever you’ve applied this, as it really does not lift off the skin at all. When you do catch a whiff it is very very ‘nice’, by this I mean it’s nice. It’s Daytime TV nice. It’s so incredibly inoffensive it’s hardly noticeable.

I struggled to register ‘oud’ in this, I get some kind of wood-like presence. But it’s not even the cleaned up ‘western’ oud. The bergamot is a clean citrus, it doesn’t have that slight ‘juicy’ element that some citrus notes present; nah this is just citrus.

None of it bad, it’s fine. And that’s the problem, it’s weak and pedestrian. It’s like watching a forgotten Richard Curtis RomCom…with Rowan Atkinson and Bill Nighy throwing in phoned-in cameos. All soundtracked by Coldplay, The Lighhouse Family and David Gray.

Twee.

Purely masculine and herbaceous - indescribably feminine in combination
Oud & Bergamot is, at first sniff, a fresh, slightly herbaceous and yet warm scent that comes across as rather masculine.
You can clearly smell the bergamot, the oud is perceptible in a pleasant dose, and the wood adds its warming effect. If it didn't tend to smell like a man, I would wear it on its own, as it already has a fantastic herb-fresh and simultaneously warm scent, with a hint of leather that almost automatically complements my imagination. But I gladly leave that to the men.
Despite shorter hair, I am quite feminine and want to highlight my feminine aura through the scent, not hide it.
Fortunately, it is a principle (and a great marketing strategy that brings in a lot of money) with the Malone fragrances that they can and should be combined. Therefore, I combine Oud & Bergamot with Malone's English Pear & Freesia, which has a floral-fruity, rather sweet character on its own.
This combination smells incredibly delicious to my nose, reminiscent of a golden autumn forest with colorful leaves rustling in the wind. The scent of pears and roses also blends in through the English Pear & Freesia, refined!
The "scent sum" of these two perfumes perfectly unites woodiness and freshness with floral-fruity notes. This herbaceous, warm depth crowned by floral sweetness simply smells enchanting, rounded, and indescribably feminine!
A scent combination that, in my opinion, fits very well in the golden September.

This rich combination lasts on my skin for a whole day, even the next morning the scent is still faintly detectable. On clothing, both scents cling for days, even weeks when softened.

Best regards, Caecilie

More Insight into the Necessity, Please!
Asparagus with herring, white sausage with sauerkraut, red wine with fish - and oud with bergamot: Jo Malone often chooses a name for a perfume that raises the hairs on the back of your neck. However, upon closer inspection, it turns out that it wasn't meant to be taken that way.

In this case, it mainly concerns the oud, which - if it is even present - at best supports a dry cedarwood note that forms the actual core of this simple fragrance. This note is fine - surely it comes from the stocks of the major fragrance manufacturers, and I believe it belongs to those that are wonderful all on their own. I like the woody, dust-dry nature of this scent referred to as cedarwood. It radiates a sense of poise and a bit of severity; one tends to sit a little straighter when surrounded by it.

One can certainly say "you" to such a note, even as a perfumer. Perhaps it also requires a certain respect to further advance something so attractive. However, a brand like Jo Malone, which quickly releases far too many hastily developed fragrances, may not provide the appropriate framework for such a work ethic.

Oud & Bergamot leaves the impression that it was actually developed not by Christine Nagel, but by the marketing department of this house. Oud must be included in the name because oud is currently in vogue. And since the attractive cedarwood note is so bitter on its own, the whole thing must be sweetened; otherwise, women won't buy it. Thus, the perfume has been poorly improved with a candy-like citrus note of the "Nimm 2" variety. This particularly spoils the top note, and one must wait until, especially in the projection, the beautiful, bitter wood accord regains its space.

No, the well-known saying about opposites attracting does not hold true in this simplification - not even in the world of beautiful fragrances. To form a contradiction or an opposition, there must be a connecting third element between two components, a unity that constitutes the opposition - a bit of Hegel reading would do some perfumers or decision-makers good. In this sense, a wood note and a citrus note can indeed create a lively tension - for example, if the bitterness serves as the connecting link, or alternatively, a particular softness that can be inherent to both. As an example of the latter, one could refer to Frapin's Passion Boisée, where a gentle wood note engages in a tension-filled dialogue with a similarly mild citrus note (mandarin).

Some fragrance notes are so beautiful that it takes considerable effort to destroy this beauty. Fortunately, in the case of Oud & Bergamot, this has not been achieved.

An intriguing & warm combination of bergamot over oud. Restrained & office friendly yet a little earthy. Linear but interesting to wear.

Top class; lemon candies, orange zest and sauna woods. Versatile, sexy, unique, fresh and bold at the same time. My beloved.

Woody for sure, though it’s more cedar forward, not much oud anywhere. Bergamot and orange are definitely present.

Initial acrid pomegranate note fades to green citrus quickly. Floral oud. Very quiet clean/soapy. Unisex and work appropriate.
