Persistent Orange
Like peeling a fresh clementine/mandarine orange - a refreshing, lovely, but warm citrus in the opening. Soon the citrus becomes woody, soft, warm, cozy, but still clearly an orange if you pay attention or are sensitive enough to fragrance. Surprisingly I do find the orange persists through the dry down to woods, making this a very special fragrance, unlike others that open with fleeting citrus or try to create a citrus accord that doesn't quite hit citrus. This one does it. Some Hermès orange compositions are a similar warm orange - but of course this doesn't have that Hermès scent that is in all of their perfumes.

Too Late!
I noticed this great bottle last Christmas. Together with the name, it immediately caught my attention. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get a bottle back then, as it was limited. Now I finally got to test it, thanks to a dear friend from Parfumo! Thank you for that, Henry:-)!
Bitter Orange smells incredibly delicious right from the start. A slightly sweet orange meets a lightly fresh-bitter Petitgrain/Bergamot. Radiantly bright, as if kissed by the sun, with an extra dose of Vitamin C. Although the notes of the top note suggest a consistent scent experience, it still smells completely unique.
After about 10-15 minutes, a certain sweetness creeps in that I can't quite place. I can't say it smells like prunes, perhaps they contribute to this subtle sweetness. I don't find it wintry or even Christmassy, nor does it smell like potpourri.
But this is the phase where I wish it were below 10 degrees; then I could enjoy this slightly warming phase more than in the current humid 28 degrees.
What I can identify quite precisely, however, is the enchanting mix of spicy-aromatic sandalwood and dry papyrus. Because this very successful mix is also offered to me by Bentley Absolute in the base; you just have to fade out the frankincense and partly the cedarwood, and then the same "accord" remains. Balsamic-creamy with a hint of orange on top, this is how Orange Bitter ends for me after 5-6 hours. The development takes about 45 minutes, and the sillage is quite strong, which might be a bit much in summer.
When I was at Ludwig Beck in Munich at the beginning of June, I received the pleasant news from a Jo Malone salesperson: This limited fragrance is supposed to remain limited, but will be re-released in November for the Christmas season. Let's see in what sizes it will be available then, because with this strong scent, 30ml would probably last me forever. No matter... I won't let it slip away again;-)!

The Woody Orange
Here I am testing a Jo Malone fragrance again after weeks.
Actually, I went into the fragrance shop without a specific goal, but a friendly (and by the way, really nice :) saleswoman "pulled" me over to the Jo Malone stand, as she believed I absolutely had to try this new scent. However, I had also hoped to discover something new... I just didn't expect it to be a Jo Malone.

Of course, I trust her taste very much, and I was looking forward to a scent I didn't know yet, but I approached it with a certain skepticism, as I had found some good fragrances among the many Jo Malones, but hardly any of them truly convinced me.

Well, this was supposed to change with this fragrance here...

The Fragrance:
Wow,... as a citrus fragrance lover, I can't say anything else at the beginning. The scent starts with a wonderful and natural orange. Initially slightly sweet, it then becomes a bit spritzily bitter, as if you were smelling the peel of this fruit. I must admit that I first thought of mandarins when it came to the peel, but it turned out to be orange peel after all.
The fantastic top note is almost like a mix of the two Hermès fragrances Mandarine Ambrée and Concentré d’Orange Verte.
The plum in the heart note blends more with the other slightly sweet notes and is therefore not very noticeable. Over time, the fragrance becomes a bit spicier or more autumnal.
It is soft and especially woody in the base, with a light, earthy note. This earthy note is the patchouli and remains more in the background. The amber is also a bit light, but gives the fragrance a nice, sweet note. The oranges are still somewhat present in the base, but as mentioned, the scent becomes increasingly woody. All in all, a really successful fragrance.

The Sillage and Longevity:
The sillage is above average, unfortunately, as I would have preferred it to be stronger for a fragrance that can also be used well in winter. But well, it is still just barely noticeable, but it won't leave a fragrance cloud behind. I believe one should really spray it on clothing as well.
The longevity is somewhat better; the fragrance lasts about eight or nine hours on the skin, although it is noticeably weaker in the later hours.

The Bottle:
The bottle is rectangular and has a golden cap, which somewhat resembles a (door) knob. In terms of shape, the bottle looks just like most Malone bottles. The label on the front also displays the name and logo of the fragrance as usual. However, the bottle is "covered" with black diamond patterns, giving it a great and varied look. Everything is nicely done and looks a bit better than the standard bottles.

Have I already said "Wow"?
But seriously. I have tested really many Jo Malone fragrances lately (especially in summer). And I mean really, really many (I just haven't commented on most of them...), so many that I have been to the Jo Malone stand so often that the girls at that stand have probably already given me the nickname "The Sniffer"...

Anyway, some of the fragrances were okay, some were so-so, but there were also quite a few really good ones among them. However, I hardly discovered such a wonderful fragrance as this one among them (aside from the beautiful Rare Tea fragrances, which are also great and some other exceptions), which may be why I am so excited about this one.

The fragrance has turned out really beautifully and with its orange notes, mixed with woods and sweet scents, it feels nicely autumnal or wintery and even a bit oriental. However, I think the sillage could have been stronger, because as beautiful as the fragrance (and especially the top note) is, it is more suitable as a daytime and casual fragrance, as it is a bit too weak for going out.

Furthermore, I think that Orange Bitters also stands quite well on its own. After all, most Jo Malones can be layered well together. But precisely for that reason, I find some of the fragrances somewhat "unfinished," as if they are just waiting to reveal their true effect when combined with other fragrances, but this one smells quite good on its own.

Well,... in any case, it is a fragrance that should be tested, best as soon as possible, as it is limited. Of course... now that I really like a Jo Malone fragrance again, it is not only limited but almost sold out again... ugh...

The most realistic, fresh-peeled orange rind I've ever smelled. Pulpy, zesty, citric. I only wish it lasted longer - it's so refreshing!

I enjoy the woody orange for something different and refreshing. The orange is bright at first, quickly drying down to the bitter woodiness.

Citrus fruit & bitter herb, overwhelmed by a palette of substitute wood, part of which pretends to be coconutty tonka bean sandalwood.

Beautiful bitter orange scent, but like with many Jo Malones, the initial excitement fades into a somewhat synthetic base note.

A lovely everyday scent with great orange in the opening, then it becomes increasingly creamy sweet with sandalwood. Nothing bitter at all.
