Cozy skin signature scent
Jo Malone London Sea Salt & Bergamot

This smells like clean cotton bedsheets during an afternoon nap in a coastal city. Bright bergamot, subtle salt, nothing complicated. Just makes you feel fresh and calm. I wear it constantly. If you want a fragrance that actually feels good on your skin without trying too hard, get this one.

A gentle hug in a fragrance
After the big disappointment I felt in Jo Malone’s Wood Sage and Sea Salt (I had high hopes as an aquatics lover) this scent has restored my faith, a bit, in Jo Malone as a house, if not one that actually understands that the word “aquatic” means it should smell like water; here it should smell like the ocean, or at least ocean adjacent if we want to get technical about the point that it is named “Sea SALT” versus “Sea” (however if we’re going to get that pedantic then, technically, “salt” wouldn’t necessarily mean aquatic, right? Rather some kind of mineral.)

Besides, no one in this industry seems to get it and my search for an ocean-smelling aquatic continues, hopefully not in vain forever?!

But as for what the fragrance is, as opposed to what it is not, I don’t get my ch sea salt here’, either. Rather, I believe this must be a nice example of bergamot, which is a component of many of the fragrances I like, but I’m still not entirely sure what the scent is (I feel as if I am lagging very far behind in my learning….I don’t know that there is, as of yet, one single note I would be sure about, save the obvious vanillas, roses, strawberries (maybe. Would I know it if it wasn’t clear in the name that it would be there?) and coconut. I’m still hopeful I’m going to get better.

Anyway, this scent is nice. The bergamot(?) smells sweetly floral without being over effusive and there IS an underlying note of something else that I can’t identify but I find quite nice in a very gentle way. “Gentle” is how I feel about this one. I like it. The house’s discontinued Earl Grey and Cucumber and Orange Blossom are still my favorites and I haven’t yet tried the popular Wild Bluebell, but this one comes in third. The rest of the sample will be something I will use when I want a comforting scent that won’t overwhelm (myself or others) while still being enjoyable.

Almost forgot to mention that the longevity of this one rather outshines most other Jo Malones….are they learning? Surely not after all these years, but it was stronger than most offerings from the house from the beginning and I took a nap with this one in and when I woke up the scent was still very present and still lovely.

I call this one a winner and I’m a bit surprised to see that a majority of those here who have opined on the fragrance so far (only seven total, I think) don’t enjoy it much.

expensive hotel by the sea to mildew-ridden rocks by the dirty pier
the opening has fresh, salty-aquatic, and mineral-like notes, like stepping into a spacious hotel lobby with stone fixtures and facades at every turn, but that interestingly layered scent slowly becomes a smell resembling something thats been wet for hours being aired out for the first time

the opening was honestly pretty good then it went downhill from there because after about three hours it smelled like mildew on my arm and i wanted to scrub it off; reminded me of the rocks i took from dumbo to use for an archi project and also the pier by the coca cola sign aka dirty salty water

date tested: 260812; size: 1.5 ml

first spritz: reminds me of a manhattan-esque hotel lobby; definitely picked up the sea salt in a very bright and slightly fresh way which i'm assuming is because of the bergamot; i can smell the mineral notes but they feel polished, like an expensive granite countertop

two hrs later: scent is only really on the inside of my elbow; still very mineral and sea salt heavy; lowkey smells like if alejandro was a perfume (reminds me of his architectural style when we were in college); reminds me of shades of gray, primarily the darker shades

four hrs later: scent lingers on the inside of my elbow; reminds me of damp rocks with algae growing between them getting struck by small waves in an unpleasant way; reminds me of how the water smells like by the pier near the coca-cola sign (dirty); the dark green note is probably from the moss and i dislike it immensely

six hrs later: wet moss smell is close to disappearing

eight hrs later: scent disappeared

Simple Summer
As a full bottle owner of Wood Sage and Sea Salt, I was excited to give this one a go. In typical Jo Malone fashion, it's not a loud or overtly complicated scent, staying very true to its name. Bright bergamot, slightly sharp and bitter to start, with a very oceanic sea salt finish. I really enjoy this on my skin as a summer scent but I do find it leans ever so slightly masculine.

Unnecessary attempt with a bitter aftertaste
I don’t really want to open up the discussion about whether this fragrance should still be sold under the Jo Malone name at all. But somehow I have the feeling that the quality of the fragrances has declined since Jo moved on. She could have taken the name with her too.

And before anyone says: “But the fragrance isn’t even inspired by Wood Sage & Sea Salt!” That’s not what I mean at all.

It’s more this playing with the name that irritates me. You read Jo Malone and expect something similar to what you know and like, you think of that special fragrance world, and then there’s a bitter bergamot salt mixture in the bottle. And unfortunately, to my nose, it’s also more bad than good.

Maybe it’s simply a small olfactory identity crisis. Not every fragrance has to appeal to you, but here the main question that remains for me is: What exactly was this supposed to be?

I only wish they had kept the names and the expectations associated with them a little more honestly separate. Then the disappointment would probably have been smaller too.

But well, Jo, you kept the name. Now someone just needs to find the right fragrance to go with it.

Like an inexperienced perfumer's dupe of Hermes' Eau des Merveilles Bleue. Get the original which is far more detailed and mesmerizing.

Agrume salé. Odeur propre de spa. Pas mauvais, mais ennuyant.

summer freshie scent on hot day; fresh sea water on warm skint; type of scent, similar to Hermes EdM Bleue, less intense and more synthetic
