Banana pudding at the beach

Of all the new Kayali “Vacay in a Bottle” scents, this is the one that took me for a surprise. It’s actually a very nice, wearable banana scent for the heat. We can all agree that banana isn’t a note we see all too often in scents, so when I heard the set was being dropped, I was most excited to try this one and Capri (the lemon sugar one - which admittedly, disappointed me).

Mau’i is a soft and sweet banana scent with a creaminess from the coconut cream. The banana initially has a greenness to it, but that goes away quickly. Now, the coconut cream has this beautiful duality that adds a gourmand touch to the scent, but blends nicely with the sandalwood to give it that “beach” and “by the ocean” vibe. It’s not too sweet and I think the florals help to keep the scent from skewing too gourmand (especially with that vanilla in there too). It’s cute and playful, but also exotic and kind of sexy! I think it would layer nicely with other sweet/floral summer scents too.

Not mad at this one at all and wouldn’t mind grabbing another 10 ml or a larger bottle when the one I have runs out. I only have one other banana scent in my collection, so this one is a nice little addition. Definitely worth a try for anyone looking for something different for summer!

Most synthetic banana I've ever tried

If you love Kayali fragrances, maybe your experience will be different - but I went into testing this knowing that I've never liked a Kayali fragrance. This isn't on purpose, I have no grudge against Kayali - but everything I've sampled from this house unfortunately has a very synthetic quality to my nose. I thought this could finally be the one for me, as I love banana and all things tropical - but sadly, Maui In A Bottle Sweet Banana | 37 turned out to be just as synthetic as other Kayalis.

This opens with a strong blast of artificial, musky banana candy. I've tried as many banana fragrances as I can find (it's been one of my favorite notes for many years), and so many turn out to be artificial - but this one actually wins for most synthetic banana I've ever tested, in my entire life. Think a slightly-creamy "Runts" banana candy, but far more synthetic - it almost scratches the back of my throat, from how artificial it feels. The banana note quickly fades into a synthetic pear + jasmine mid, but this also disappears fast.

So within a matter of mere minutes, I was left with a quiet dry-down of synthetic coconut cream (that turned sharper the more it developed), a bit of musky + artificial sandalwood, and a hint of lingering, synthetic pear in the background. The longer this went on, the more the base notes muddled together into an artificial blend that resembled something like plastic.

I hope I won't offend those that love it - I'll be glad if you have a different experience! But unfortunately, every part of this was headache-inducing for me. I actually can't remember the last fragrance I tried where every note was so strongly-artificial as this one was. (Which is saying something, since I sample a lot of "budget" and "cheapie" fragrances.) Even as a banana-lover, I'm thankful I only sampled - as I wouldn't say this is blind-buy friendly.

Banana flavored whipped cream

When I saw the leak of the Vacay In a Bottle set, I knew I was gonna get the 10ml mini bottle set and not the sample set. I was pretty curious to see Kayali tackling summer scents and the notes didn't seem bad for each of these perfumes. I decided to test them in their box order which is why this one is the third up for a review.

I was not expecting loving it as much as I did. I don't have any banana fragrance in my collection so I didn't really know how it would turn up on my skin. For the first few minutes, I get this light airy, creamy delicious banana flavored whipped cream with just a hint of that tropical coconut goodness. Pears give it that uplifting freshness and adds another touch of fruitiness to it all. It's scrumptious, delicious and simply amazing. As the perfume moves forward, it's the sandalwood, vanilla and jasmine that come to the front. Sandalwood with its creaminess that keeps the perfume from going too sugary and a beautiful warmth. Jasmine with its delicate, powdery white petals that unfurl as the perfume evolves. Vanilla, the one we all know and love from Kayali that is a touch of gourmand and sugary sweet. Coconut cream recedes in the background giving the perfume that crisp coconut shaving scent with a bit of charred bits. Banana fades behind the more prominent notes I've mentioned. The drydown is more woody with the sandalwood becoming more prominent and sweet with the vanilla taking a part of the spotlight.

All in all, it's a beautiful fragrance that stands out from those I have tested up until now. There's a slight synthetic note at the edge, but nothing too strong or too annoying. I am really pleasantly surprised by this lovely perfume that smells tropical without that sunscreen vibe (something I often get when coconut is a note in a fragrance). I probably would go for a full 50ml bottle if Kayali ever decides to release them in different full bottle sizes and this one made the blind-buy more worth to me.

A note on the Vacay In A Bottle set:
While I do not regret my blind-buy purchase of the 10ml mini bottles, I recommend people try out the sample set before going for the 10ml. All four of them were lovely, but I don't feel like they were on par with older Kayali fragrances. Personal opinion incoming: I think Kayali should slow down on the releases and work towards solidifying their brand and their intentions. The Vacay In A Bottle feels a little bit gimmicky to me, like a cash grab. I would've seen them as body mists instead of perfumes. The perfumes aren't really unique and I've often thought of them as being a bit generic.

In order of preference: Maui In A Bottle Sweet Banana | 37, Maldives In A Bottle Ylang Coco | 20, Capri In A Bottle Lemon Sugar | 14 and Marrakesh In A Bottle Orange Blossom | 24. This is a little bit surprising as I thought the order would look like: Capri In A Bottle Lemon Sugar | 14, Maldives In A Bottle Ylang Coco | 20, Marrakesh In A Bottle Orange Blossom | 24 and Maui In A Bottle Sweet Banana | 37.

Creamy dreamy banana beach

Banana is such a cool perfume note.
It's fruity and pleasant, but always kind of unexpected because it's less popular than other fruit.
In Maui Sweet Banana, it's relatively subtle. You can definitely smell it, but it doesn't hit you over the head with a pungent banana candy note. To me it smells like a medium ripe banana, neither green, nor on the verge of decay. It's a bit sweeter more candy-like than a banana in real life, but not overly artificial. Really "just right" to my nose!

The rest of the scent is a beachy blend of coconut, vanilla and soft florals. It all feels very creamy and I get a hint of a salty sun-kissed skin note. Maybe it's the sandalwood.

This is a playful, summery gourmand that transports you to a sunny island in your mind.
I can't decide if I like this one or Capri Lemon Sugar the most out of the vacation set. Let's all hope that Kayali will issue full bottles of all of them soon. The single minis that came out a few days ago were a step in the right direction, but I want more!

Sunscreeny but add nanners

Takes the typical sunscreeny coconut scent profile and adds a fluffy floral touch and a powdery woodiness. You get a subtle sweet banana in the opening for a cheeky fruity touch paired with a sweet pear, that develops into a creamy coconut and jasmine combo. The jasmine here is fluffy, lush, sweet, and the coconut leans a bit sunscreeny as is expected with this sort of vacation esque scent profile. Dry down offers a powdery woody touch with some sandalwood and leftovers of that creamy coconut and fluffy jasmine. Overall a lovely take on a vacationy scent profile with fun additions of subtle banana notes.
