Heady Rich Dark Fizzy Pop Dreams of Fame
Canyon Dreams is bold and substantial. Opulent Oud mingles with a dried mandarin rind note into a golden maple syrup and toasted almond covered antique rose. This is not overly sweet or cloying, but it is no light weight Spring fling, either. It last all day and night on my skin and though it isn't leaving a vapor trail 6 feet long, it is also noticeable to the person sitting next to you on the train, the plane or in the club. Personally, I would wear this in Autumn and Winter and while I think it is gorgeous, it doesn't whisper devious thoughts in my ear late at night. It has a bit of a cola fizz and flavor that is really not my thing but fortunately that is well-balanced with the beautiful powdery rose and sandalwood notes. This scent was made for the Theatre, the Ballet, Broadway lights, and yet it has something Shalimar-esque about it that tells me, the right Man or Women could wear as a bold daytime statement- but you better be ready to bring the heat- or call for back up- or walk the talk...if you show up at 8:30 am to the board room in this one, because heads will already be turning- lights, camera, Hello...You're On the Air !

Rich and Spicy Floriental
Another rich, substantial, perfume-like eau de parfum, CANYON DREAMS, from the Keiko Mecheri Bespoke collection, is a rather spicy woody floriental composition with a lot of oomph. This is one of those perfumes where I am constantly aware that I am wearing it, as wafts continue to emanate from my skin for hours after having put even a small amount on. From the notes, I have no idea what is making this perfume seem spicy to my nose: sandalwood, almond, patchouli, bergamot, mandarin orange, rose and agarwood (oud). That sounds pretty tame to me. Is it just that these elements are combined in richer concentration than usual? Or are there some mystery notes, as well?

As I have come to expect from Keiko Mecheri, the ingredients seem top notch. This is yet another excellent example of why people turn to niche perfumery. Super high quality. Whether or not you like one of the particular perfumes in the Bespoke collection will turn only on your feelings about the notes, not the materials. CANYON DREAMS is, again, really quite spicy, so it's not going to appeal to everyone, and I do believe that it is more feminine than masculine, notwithstanding the name, which to me at least sounds more masculine than feminine. (It also reminds me of the name of one of Andy Tauer's perfumes, LONESTAR MEMORIES, although that composition is very different...)

CANYON DREAMS seems to me like a great wintertime perfume, and I'm happy to have purchased the Bespoke coffret so that I can wear this again once the weather has cooled off. There is a lot of complexity here, with many different layers emerging and developing in interesting ways over the course of a wear. For that reason, I find it somewhat indescribable! (-;

Noble Simplicity, Quiet Grandeur
For a very long time, I had intended to order a sample of "Canyon Dreams." I had imagined the scent so wonderfully: after the citrusy, rather sweet opening, Oud, almond, and rose for a lush indulgence. To round it off, sandalwood and as a balance, smoky patchouli - or something like that.
But "Canyon Dreams" is quite different. It is a very noble and quiet fragrance. Along the way to the conjunction of the scent, there are various fragrance stations. And then, as I imagine it, I reach a Shinto shrine, one of many on a pilgrimage route where visitors are rare. You arrive. It is quiet, no one else is there, incense wafts delicately and smells of patchouli in the way it is always described by Japan connoisseurs.
So I embark on a dream pilgrimage with "Canyon Dreams."
After applying the fragrance, it smells of balanced citrus. A more tart mandarin and bergamot in harmony, so that I do not perceive them individually, and it is exquisite. After half an hour, the scent of resinous smoke emerges, initially distinct, then fading.
I now expect Oud, almond, and rose. However, "Canyon Dreams" becomes only slightly and delicately smoky. There is no Oud as I know it. So I am on a path I do not know and did not expect. When rose and almond are present, it is merely as a fine creamy balm underlying the smoke.
This phase of the scent, ethereal and repeatedly interwoven with fragrant transparent smoke veils, lasts about an hour for me. The hesperides slowly recede. Like a citrus grove that gradually diminishes in size while hiking, until it is no longer visible after a curve. Now the shrine comes into view. Noble patchouli blooms. Still, "Canyon Dreams" is creamy-smoky. But gradually, patchouli takes the lead, the smoke almost dissipates. I step into the small temple, which seems to be built from old, still faintly fragrant cedar wood. It is completely silent, and it smells of fine patchouli. Like delicate bells swaying in an imperceptible breeze, some resins join in, giving the patchouli a sweetness and making it milder and slightly sweeter. I stand still, immersing myself in the silence that smells so soothing. Now, there is also a hint of the resinous incense with indefinable spices that other pilgrims before me have burned as offerings. After a long time spent in contemplation and silence, I slowly and thoughtfully leave the place. The Bruckner motet: "Locus iste a Deo factus est," resonates in my head! The fine patchouli is around me, in my clothing, and outside I temporarily perceive a bit of vanilla and almond scent. This noble patchouli fragrance, with very fine spicy notes, lingers with me until the next day. It continually returns the calm I felt in the shrine.
Canyon Dreams is a very sensitive, quiet, indeed contemplative fragrance, a steady companion over a long time. There is nothing loud or spectacular about it.
For those who love patchouli, this fragrance allows one to "arrive." I am not currently walking the patchouli path. I would not have acquired the sample if I had expected such a scent.
But it was nice to unexpectedly have a fine, quiet fragrance as a companion on the pilgrimage path of perfume.

After a cheerful citrusy and bright floral start, it gets really nice. Wood and a hint of patchouli deepen the scent, with vanilla adding a light sweetness.

Not an abyss, but a classic patch with flowers and vanilla. A gentle breeze brings woodiness. The canyon breathes.

Starts citrusy, then becomes softly floral, ending on sweet vanilla patch and wood. I find it quite relaxing.
