masterpiece!
This scent is a circular skin scent on me. At first I smell a sweet tobacco, then vanilla, then tobacco, then vanilla. The dance continues until the base where they stand arm in arm exhausted and calm. The entire time I could smell both at the same time. Very well blended and beautiful, but did not last as long as I had hoped.

Synthetic flowers
Oh no, no, no, NO! This fragrance had me cringing from the very first spray.

Sure, Magnifique is unique, but perhaps Lancome took their new daring approach to making fragrances a little too far this time.

I really expected Magnifique to smell magnificent; rich, elegant, powerful and almost regal. Honestly I don't find anything wonderful about smelling like a piece of burnt plastic and synthetic flowers.

The alcohol is so strong in this fragrance, it almost wipes out the notes completely. I have smelt cheap drugstore deoderants that smell better than Magnifique.

If you can manage to get past the overly strong opening notes without washing this scent off, the scent does improve slightly. Magnifique becomes a woodsy fragrance, yet I'd say it is more masculine smelling than feminine.

I very rarely get headaches from fragrances, yet Magnifique has succeeded in giving me one. I think it's because of the strong caraway and vetiver notes.

I don't know if I could ever recommend this fragrance, I'm rather glad I don't work behind a Lancome fragrance counter, otherwise I'd have to lie and don a false smile everytime someone bought this fragrance.

So two-years-ago?
In 2011 I turned 40. I threw an informal party and invited a lot of good friends, colleagues and family, and I still remember this a great day with lots of love, laughter and music. Just the way I like it. One of my presents was Magnifique. I had not made a wishlist, so everyone was free to bring a gift or do whatever they wanted. It was a dear aunt that gave me this gem, knowing about my expensive and eccentric hobby. While handing the gift she said: “I asked the lady in the store to find something interesting. This is what she gave me and I would like to know what you think”. Already wearing a different perfume I told her, that I would give her my opinion within the next week.
When spraying it the next day I knew I had found myself a long life companion. It starts out really crisp with an almost chalky sharpness and yet with a rosy note. The combination of saffron and flowers makes me think of berries - I do not know why but it is pretty fruity to my nose. Then Vetiver and sandalwood makes the fragrance a lot more spicy and this stays for many hours.
I love the bottle. Simple in a beautiful colour. I love this design, which looks a lot like Oriflame’s Amber Elixir, only taller.
Luca Turin rates it with two stars and writes “so two-years-ago”. I do not always agree with Mr. Turin. I am amazed that Lancôme have not made a series of flankers for this one, since I find it one of their best perfumes. I have not tried the edt, but according to the ratings the edt is way better than the edp, so I guess I shall try to get my hands on it. Unfortunately, I only have about 10-15cl left in my edp bottle. Sad but true.
Oh, btw: I did call my aunt the next day. I told her exactly how I felt about the perfume : marvelous, wonderful… Magnifique.

The perfect balance. Worth every cent.
This is a review from a 2008 formulation, not the newest formulation

It opens with a strong saffron and a bit of powder (just a hint from the rose I think). There is a slight spice but not distinct enough to say for sure it's caraway. I actually think it may be the cypriol oil. I don't get any of the rye bread caraway scent, anyhow. There is definitely that synthetic thing going on that others have complained about but it's not too overpowering to ruin the scent for me. I wish there was a bit more warmth in this though. The opening has an unfinished feeling to it.

Now we get to the magic of this one. The heart. I checked back in after an hour of application and I am getting a sweet rose. Very similar to the rose in Tresor, I can see why people compare the two. But unlike Tresor there is Saffron behind this rose cutting the sweetness and adding more depth to this composition and grounding the sweet rose. It's lovely. The warmth I wanted in the opening is here in the heart thanks to the saffron and spice (maybe caraway most likely the cypriol oil, but I still can't say for sure). The spice is subtle and soft, a very goldilocks amount. Not too much, not too little. Perfect. The synthetic thing is all gone now too.

I'm checking in on the dry down nine hours after application. It's definitely a skin scent now but it's a beautiful soft sweet floral with a slight hint of sandalwood. There is also a memory of the saffron and spice that sits behind the sandalwood and rose.

Yea. I love it.

Wolf in Sheep's Clothing
Having never tried it in the stores when it was available, I became curious after viewing the notes and reviews so I bought a mini of Magnifique. You can imagine my surprise when found that this is actually an immortelle bomb with a fresh rosey almost verging on peony aspect to it.

Saffron and caraway are easily discernable but the base is syrupy, caramelized, spiced, immortelle through and through with maybe just a touch of sandalwood. Up close it is all you can smell on the skin. Eight inches to two feet away the fresh rosey aspect which I would have identified as peony is very prominent with only a hint of the caramelly spiced based.

Overall Magnifique has an interesting and unusual composition. The listed notes here made me think I might be in for an overtly Middle Eastern styled rose scent but that's not what I got at all. After smelling it for myself and identifying the immortelle note, the disparate reviews make sense to me now. I like Magnifique, but I don't know that I love it. The dichotomy of fresh floral and then sweet spicy then fresh spicy in one perfume while unique is a little unsettling. I can't think of anything that resembles this. Given that uniqueness I think this would make a remarkable signature scent for someone you loves it regardless of gender.

A pleasant spicy-flowery scent , where the saffron opening notes are very noticeable.Quite good the bottle too.

Great woody note, nagarmotha, smoky base, new rose. Maybe too innovative for 2008? Unfortunately no longer available.

I love this unique interplay of rose and woods ... or was it that one woman who always wore it? Great bottle, by the way.

Starts exciting with spices and I also perceive a bit of leather, then a wonderful transformation to the finer treasure. Beautifully romantic!

Saffron + Rose + Wood = Niche
At Lancome 8-) this equation just couldn't work. It was, IMHO, way too exotic for the mass market.

Slim rose, harmless jasmine, bright wood, fresh-spicy sharpness. Very artificial, very colorless. Plastic & soap, India-hippie shop. Awful.

Starts with a sparkling, effervescent freshness of flowers, then fresh fruits + flowers. Becomes waxy-soapy, vetiver/sweet grass + possibly patchouli takes away the lightness.
