O How Refreshing!
This fragrance is absolutely wonderful. Superb in fact.

I had chosen the perfect day to test O de Lancome. A rather humid Summer day in the centre of a busy and steamy city.

I must say that at first the citrus notes came on quite strongly. It was very green and lemony. Although not entirely unpleasant, I was expecting the worst seeing that these fragrances don't seem to agree with my chemistry or my nose very often. I was about to write this scent off the list when I brought my wrist up to my nose for another sniff.

I was met with a delightful, fresh and cheerful blend of honeysuckle, various herbs/spices, jasmine and mild citrus notes. On my skin the heart and drydown was soft, slightly soapy, musky and feminine.

I can't say that I understand the masculine references. To me O de Lancome is girly and somewhat sweet, in other words something I can't imagine a man wearing.

I had no idea that this was a fragrance from the 70's, it is very modern and could easily pass as something being produced today. The lasting power is average, around 7 hours. I do recommend this.

Mossy Cologne
Dark citrus with a touch of florals.
After a regular cologne, the moss in Ô makes it feel like sunglasses on a bright day.

A memory of summer - and my grandmother
From a very young age I remember Ô de Lancôme. To me, it is the smell of summer. A smell of freshly cut citrus fruits and of chopped herbs. The sandalwood and oak moss ground the scent so it does not disappear instantly.
Every summer I went to see my grandparents. Being at their place was an endless row of days with sunshine and loads of exciting things to do. Or so I recall it. My grandparents lived outside the city and they had a huge garden and an old garage with an attic full of things, such as old magazines, a piano and hundreds of jazz records. My brother and I spent hours going through all this. We played the piano and listened to the records. We read loads of Donald Duck and Superman. No one came to check if we behaved. It was great!
My grandmother wore this fragrance. She always smelled so good and she wore it all year round. It stood on the shelf in the bathroom and I went there many times during the day just to smell it.
She passed away way too early - she was in her mid sixties. At the funeral - I was ten years old - I thought I could smell the perfume in church. It is so strongly attached to my memory of her that it sometimes makes me cry. Ô de Lancôme is my grandmother.

Discontinued, really ?
As Parfumo doesn't like when I try a suggestion of revision (I can't no longer suggest a revision anyway), I wanted to add here that I bought this exact bottle directly from Lancôme this morning.
it's available on their French website and last time I checked at a local department store (something like 2 weeks ago), it was there too.

Enchanted April
It happened recently while I was tidying up. Once a year, let's say, I organize my books. I dust them off. I see if maybe I should part with a few of them. I almost never do that, though. On the upper shelves, which require a ladder, are books that I have almost forgotten about, under - sometimes - twelve months of dust. (I am a good and decisive thrower and sorter, but not when it comes to books: the respect for the written word - as silly as it may sometimes be - runs deep in me.) And then - quite suddenly - I had it in my hands for the first time in at least twenty years: Enchanted April, written by Elizabeth von Arnim almost a hundred years ago. I then sat on the edge of the sofa with the dusty book and read its nearly three hundred pages in one go.

Enchanted April is what one would commonly call a 'women's book.' So what? Von Arnim tells the story of four very different ladies - Englishwomen like her, too happy to call themselves unhappy, but too unhappy to be happy - who together rent a wonderful villa on the Italian coast for a month - that very April. And how each of them comes a little closer to happiness in her own way. Von Arnim revels in light and colors, tells of sunshine, flowers, scents - in a language that is light-footed and airy, but never simple-minded or banal. And when I finished reading the nearly three hundred pages - partly leaning on the sofa's edge, eventually sitting, while the already sorted empty bottles stared accusingly at me from the hallway - the villa by the sea and its little happiness felt very close.

The same lightness and airiness, the same faded charm and the same fragrant colors, the same slightly old-fashioned but loving and careful language - and sunshine, flowers, scents, told lightly but never trivially - I find in Ô de Lancôme. Ô comes from a time when it was common to clearly categorize a perfume as a women's or men's scent - by today's standards, its classification as a women's fragrance seems almost anachronistic - being a delicate hesperidic chypre. It is nostalgic and a bit old-fashioned - yet youthful and eternally young. With an almost watery herbaceousness - dry, but not bitter, serious, but not solemn - it reminds me of those four very different people whose souls unexpectedly regain wings in the Ligurian spring sun. A lot of kindness and longing - and joy in the little happiness.

Conclusion: Moments like my leisurely afternoon with 'Enchanted April' have a calm, unexpected, and sudden beauty. And Ô de Lancôme has that too. For women. Men. People.

Outside, madness and heat rage
Inside here: still. I sit
In the moss, hear the lemon brook babbling
And basil wagtails chirping.

The answer to sticky summer heat. Citrusy breeze, tree shade, soft moss. Ooooo!
A quiet regret that it can't be drunk.

Since my youth, no summer goes by without this one. Yes, it has been reformulated. Still, I love it. If you like citrus chypre: give it a try!
