When Fig Trees Weep
We stood before an old gate, tightly entwined with green foliage. The evening breeze played within it, making the leaves dance, while the last rays of sunshine broke through the vines in golden splendor. I placed my hand on the warm wooden gate and slowly pushed it open. Before us lay a garden - a sea of blooming roses. But my gaze was caught by a single flower: the Centifolia, which shone in deep purple. People called it the Forbidden Rose.
But a legend surrounded it: above it reigned a mighty fig tree, deeply rooted in the earth. He loved this rose so much that night after night he leaned his crown towards her, as if wanting to touch her velvety cheeks. But his roots held him fast. He could never reach her. And so he wept in the dark golden tears of love, nourished from his innermost being, sweet as fig jam. The rose, however, opened up and received the tears in her chalice. She transformed and gifted him a scent, as lovely as an invisible kiss that touched his wooden heart.
Perhaps this sounds like too much of a fairy tale. Probably, the fig tree himself would have just rolled his eyes. But this is precisely where I find the magic of Forbidden Rose. This fragrance has conjured an entire legend before my inner eye, and not every scent can achieve that.
The fragrance notes sound very tempting to me as a lover of sweet perfumes: juicy fig, sweet jam, lush rose, and a warm musk bed. The opening, however, initially seems a bit confusing, as the fig wavers between bitter freshness and fruity sweetness. But it quickly decides on the sweet path. I would have done the same. From that point on, it seems to ripen before my eyes. From unripe fruits, plump, juicy beauties emerge, which eventually burst and pour their jammy sweetness into the blossoms. The rose radiates powerfully, surrounded by an aura that shifts from fresh green to deep dark red. In the end, it loses its velvety petals, which softly fall onto a warm musk bed.
Sensual, seductive, almost like a reflection of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden. No coincidence that Adam and Eve reached for fig leaves. Forbidden Rose is officially a unisex fragrance. However, I suspect that Adam would have been rather reserved with all that sweetness. Yet, had he smelled it on Eve, he surely would not have been able to resist her.
