Mysterious, yet Convincing
And the GAoP 2016 in Düsseldorf continues. The booth of Les Senteurs Gourmandes may not be one of the largest, most spectacular, or most original, but this delicious label presented me with three puzzles right away.
First, I wondered what "gourmand" fragrances have to do with oud? Certainly, Les Senteurs Gourmandes has a great fondness for perfumes, especially with vanilla, but also with chocolate, coffee, or fruits. However, oud as a delicacy would be foreign to me.
This leads to the question of why the oud fragrances created by Bertrand Duchaufour, such as Amber Oud, Black Oud, Blossom Oud, and Rose Oud, according to the ingredient list, contain no agarwood at all? It seems that the people at Les Senteurs Gourmandes do not take consistency in their concept too seriously.
However, they seem to take the prices seriously, which brings me to my third question. Because these are remarkably affordable, indeed sensationally fair, considering that the Eau de Parfums consist of 85% seemingly high-quality natural ingredients and are offered for under €30 for 100 ml. Furthermore, the bottles are minimalist but absolutely solid, featuring an exemplary sprayer and a wooden cap. How do they manage that?
So, I take a closer look at Incense Oud, which is supposed to contain oud at least, and I am pleasantly surprised. In the first few seconds, it exudes a valuable aura of soft gourmand saffron notes, sweet light almond to marzipan-like nuances, and a subtle leather touch on noble wood.
The namesake incense remains quite discreet in the background. The oud also doesn't quite dare to unleash its full radiance. Nevertheless, one perceives something resinous-animalic, and the fragrance overall seems much more expensive than it actually is.
There is a minor catch, though: Incense Oud could be more intense. One longs for more projection and longer longevity. As my predecessor FabianO mentioned, it is absolutely office-friendly, which is not necessarily the case for every oud fragrance. Still, at this price, it's absolutely fine, because you get ... that's right: pocket atomizers.
The puzzles may not be solved, but I really enjoy this bargain!
