Syrupy berry-ade spilled on suede
Byzance is the scent I probably liked the most out of the La Route de la Soie collection, which is strange, because out of all these not-very-Ormonde-Jayne-smelling scents, Byzance is the least Ormonde Jayne of all. Perhaps the fact that Byzance is so far outside of the Ormonde Jayne envelope that I stop expecting to find all the signature OJ tropes and enjoy it for what it is.

A plush, dove-grey suede accord underpins everything here. Byzance is big, luscious, and unusually for Ormonde Jayne, exuberant to the point of loudness. It smells like a fizzy, cherry-flavored milkshake or sherbet that's been dumped all over a new suede couch, causing the suede to hiss and effervesce like a Mentos popped into a bottle of Coca Cola and shaken hard.

I honestly can't think of anything else that smells like Byzance, except for, perhaps, a few key portions of Diptyque's Kimonanthe (intense apricot syrup over Japanese incense) and État Libre d'Orange's Bendelirious (cherries over champagne and face powder). It smells so outlandish that I start to wonder if Ormonde Jayne really meant to make a perfume that smelled of pink antibiotic syrup spilled over the inside of a luxury car, or if it was an accident that got bottled up.

Either way, it's fun. For Ormonde Jayne, this is punchy, hyper-gourmand stuff with a smile on its face. For those of us still trying to find that line between class and sass, this could be it.

From Another Realm
Do you know those daily, hardly explainable, very personal connections, déjà vus or "coincidences" too? It doesn't happen every day; on some days, I might not pay enough attention. Or they simply don't occur every day. Or it's just a figment of my imagination. Nevertheless: these little connections and winks of fate, when life shows you: listen, everything is fine, it all fits together. Everything is connected. Or at least everything is as it should be. Negatives as well as positives.

When you talk to a buddy about your favorite movie in the morning and it suddenly airs on TV that evening? When you see a meme on Facebook and that exact scene appears two hours later in the episode of the series you are currently watching? When you think of strawberries for no reason in the morning and then your wife surprises you with a strawberry sundae in the evening? When you hear a song about Egypt on the radio and later that day there is an attack there? When you drive past a workshop, knock on wood because your car has been running smoothly for so long, and twenty kilometers later a tire bursts? When you see an ad for Mexican tequila on the tram and later in the day your colleagues surprise you with tequila as a farewell drink? Or like today: when you come from your grandpa's funeral, who used to pick currants from the garden for you as a child and mash them in a pot with milk - and then you reach into your sample box at home and test "Byzance"...

It may all be imagination, but it always brings me a good yet mysterious feeling and a smile. And "Byzance" of course in a very sad yet beautiful sense. A farewell greeting. Everything will be fine. Think of the good times. I will be there. May the currant be with you. Or something like that ;). In any case, "Byzance" by Ormonde Jayne is an exceptional perfume. Even without any sentimentalities and invisible strings of our world. "Tuscan Leather" with a currant heart. "Baccarat Rouge" in fruity and rosy. But still, especially due to its deep brown leather, anything but girly. Simply heavenly, milky, and delicious. Sinful, straight, never cloying or sour. That's often the quick downfall with milky scents. Not here. "Byzance" has an aura, has numerous unique features, has charisma and character. And my grandpa would have surely liked it.

Bottle: quite pleasing to the eye
Sillage: quite assertive due to its leathery facets
Longevity: 7 hours, the base has staying power

Conclusion: one of the most unusual, deepest, and most beautiful little fruits on the market. Or one of the most playful and feminine leather fragrances. However you want to see it. In any case: warm regards from Grandpa!

Byzance or not, that is the question.
Byzance from the "La Route de Soie" series by Ormonde Jayne opens with blackcurrants and a hint of milk. Until now, I couldn't imagine this milk note, but it is indeed present. Later, it becomes a bit softer, with a delicate hint of wood and iris, but the berries run through the entire scent progression.
The base notes are, for me, hardly perceptible.
With the name Byzance, I unfortunately have a preconceived notion from Rochas Byzance 1987, which gives me a different impression, but this one cannot be blamed for that.

I use this comment to briefly summarize my impression of the "La Route de Soie" series.
Four fragrances have been grouped under the title "The Silk Road": Damask, Tanger, Byzance, and Levant.
Anyone who thinks of strong orientals with these names is mistaken. For me, all four are suited to warm spring days.
All four are related, despite different ingredients, and share a similarity. They are soft, rounded, and harmoniously coordinated. And while I can appreciate this, it doesn't quite hit the mark for me. I have the impression, feel free to correct me here, that the base notes are too weak. It remains fruity-floral, modern, as if a soft focus filter has been applied. In my mind's eye, I see young ladies from affluent backgrounds with ponytails, beautifully smooth complexions, pink-and-white striped shirts, skinny jeans, and Tod's, oh, and we mustn't forget the pearl stud earrings.

Pepper and slightly aromatic blackcurrant in milk. I dont find it very sweet. Unique to me, does not compare to anything else. Comforting.

Sweet milky blackcurrant over very light salty suede. Girly cute for a teenager who wants to feel more grown up.

Powdery-creamy floral-fruity with a hint of wild leather in the dry down. The synthetic elements are noticeable, but that's fine by me.

Fruity body lotion, slightly balsamic, pleasant sweetness, and a hint of leather. Nice, versatile, quite mild.

In Byzantium, there are sour blackcurrants with a big glass of sweet vanilla milk. Served on lots of wood + little leather. Unfortunately, I'm not a milk fan.

I mainly smell milk, specifically hot milk that’s slightly scorched at the bottom of the pot. Very gourmand, almost like Crème Brûlée.

For me, this is a wood scent. Mind you, an incredibly beautiful one. I smell pleasant, softly creamy, very very soft wood.

Soft wooden pencils have been sharpened aromatically and are now relaxing in comfort milk with a creamy, delicate fruit topping.

A balsamic fruity scent, something completely different.
Not too sweet berries in a light milk cream.
Soft and pleasant.
Turns slightly smoky.

Unusually delicious and fruity scent with a soft milk accord. A very pleasant, calm, slightly woody fragrance that lasts well.
