It Smells Like White Clouds Over The Sea
What do Hugo Man original and Hugo Reversed have in common? Nothing, apart from the iconic shape of the flask. Reversed is not a flanker of Hugo Man. Instead, it is a scent on its own. The bottle inspired by the cans of the soldiers, this time is solid white, in a ceramic style liken M&W Tabac Original, same screw cap with a black ribbon as Hugo Man classic.
Despite the few notes contained in the olfactory pyramid, Reversed is not a linear perfume, but a scent that ranges between a citric head, an aromatic heart, and a woody and earthy base. As soon as you pop the cap and the juice comes out of the sprayer, a massive cloud of fresh citrus fruits wraps the air, the grapefruit feels bitter, pleasant, it makes you want to drink it like freshly squeezed juice. The savoury blend of bergamot and grapefruit give a beautiful effervescent citrus tone to the overture, somehow tart, tangy, and refreshing. Miserably, the top notes stay only for half an hour for my skin.
The herbal heart mingles aromatic rosemary, with slightly green and camphorous quality, and pamplewood synthetic molecule, which adds a fresh bitterness. If I smell the scent directly from the sprayer, I get a delicious taste of blood orange juice, which I surmise is coming from the pamplewood. Conversely, on my skin, the heart hides some wet and powdery facets, as if the heart notes were featuring violet leaf.
The woody base rests on the earthy breath of the vetiver and a kind of dry wood. The vetiver is indisputably detectable, yet gentle, with its smoky, warm and bitter facets of chocolate as if there were also some modern patchouli. However, it is not the vetiver we're used to, as in Guerlain or Carven for instance. For me, there is also a hint of sweetness in the base, which appears quite soon in the heart and adds a twist akin to CD Sauvage, and I won't be surprised if tonka bean or the new normal ambroxan was contributing to this. The overall base is soothing and calming, it does not scream loud.
I don't think it is all too synthetic or scratchy. It captivates the attention without being too loud while relying on the subtle blending of its few notes. Both sillage and performance are averages, more than half a day on my skin and clothes. The fragrance does not fill the room but moves when you move. Perhaps, it is targeted towards a younger audience. Still, I do like it. The incredible freshness makes Reversed suitable for warmer days, Spring and Summer seasons fit the best. It is a daily safe, polite, and casual fragrance, for leisure time as well as office, or school, why not? Reversed is definitely an excellent compliment getter, outstandingly safe and stand out crowd-pleaser.
This review is based upon a 75ml bottle I own.
Stay well; stay healthy.
