Never did I like madness better!
Fit of Folly is the 6th chapter in the journey through the emotions of the Maison Margiela. A tribute to madness, to folly. However, if you expect a crescendo, a furious finale here - I must disappoint you. The perfumers Suzy le Helley and Philippe Paparella-Paris manage to depict craziness with much more subtle means. They take the path of confusion by completely reinterpreting patchouli and misleading the nose.
"We wanted to give madness a face - a liberating state of total surrender. We expressed this through an abstract, unconventionally composed patchouli. Musky notes are vertical, patchouli loses its earthy facets, and amber woods become mineral, creating a complete olfactory disorientation." - say the two perfumers.
And - it works. Fit of Folly comes softly and quietly, yet without revealing much of itself.
A distinct bergamot? Not at all.
The individual components appear distorted - and yet somehow familiar.
To read a fragrance pyramid and then list components here - just to pretend that I can smell all of this - does not do justice to the scent.
Patchouli? Yes, somehow, but not in the way one is used to.
Fit of Folly challenges me, forces me again and again to smell it on my arm to uncover its secrets - and yet I fail. And the craziest thing about it is that I like it so much.
It remains a dense web of nuances and aromas, which wafts spicy, warm, and intense on my skin. The scent changes repeatedly, sometimes seeming almost disharmonious, only to become completely rounded again shortly after.
How this can work is a mystery to me. I perceive it as a masterful achievement by the perfumers.
However, it must be clearly stated that Fit of Folly will not necessarily be everybody's darling. The overall impression is too confusing.
I am already looking forward to further reports, as this scent definitely provides material for discussion. - Thank goodness, I think, because there is already enough that is mass-compatible and boring, isn't there? So let's rather indulge in the (surprisingly quiet) madness!
