Get it away from me ASAP
Do you know the feeling of being super excited to try out perfumes from a niche Italian house but feeling like your local fancy department store doesn’t stock them so you make use of your Italy vacation to go to this tiny teensy tiny niche perfume store and make the store person try every single gourmand and sweet fragrance from this house on you and you end up thinking “they’re all meh” but you already put the store person through so much trouble so you feel awful and buy a small bottle of the least offensive scent to then walk home and realize that you hate how it smells on your skin – a kind of boring hospital-grown vanilla that was mixed with plastic notes of hell-baked candy – and the smell refuses to fade because the perfume is so high quality but so annoying and oily but you don’t realize how oily it is until you realize that your white t-shirt is all stained as if you joined a free for all piss play party so you end up going back home from your vacation to then pop up at your local fancy department store to find out they stock the entire line and when you see it you just feel like screaming until every follicle in your body falls off?

falling in love with vanilla again
Vanitas is a gourmand delight and an olfactory antidepressant. The vanilla smells rich and decadent, with a citric sweetness from the orange blossom and some smokiness loaned by the myrrh. Vanitas would be the centre of attention not because of a unique personality but for being as delectable as a caloric-infested, caramelized sugar bundt cake and as sweet and charming as Snow White circa 1937 (especially the part where she sings Someday My Prince Will Come and the animals are dancing around her, every living creature as high as a kite). Sillage is soft but the longevity of this is ridiculously tenacious, no fear of it ever disappearing unless soap is applied with a strong arm. On the "interesting" scale, this lies at the polar opposite to Mona di Orio's Vanille, with Lutens' Un Bois Vanille in the middle of the scale and Tihota in Vanitas' camp. Vanitas would satisfy cravings for sweets whereas Mona's Vanille would enter a debate with you regarding the same.

Cakey
My foray into this brand has met with some success: Vanitas is a satisfying cake. The opening is a bit medicinal. I can notice the citrus but not the myrrh unless that stinging medicinal note is that!

The sweet vanilla is just robust enough but it does not smell like vanilla pods but more like the whole baked cake covered in icing. Reminds me somewhat of the more sophisticated Note Vanillee. Vanitas is for yourself, when you want to smell like cake and eat it too.

My holy grail cotton-candy vanilla
If I have to pick one *simple* vanilla to wear for the rest of my days, it would absolutely be this one. In my opinion, Profumum Roma has really mastered the art of “simple beasts” and this is definitely one of them.

Vanitas is a linear vanilla with superb sillage and longevity. A little bit goes a VERY long way, and because of its more oily formula, it really has a way of sticking itself onto your skin and clothes. The myrrh give the vanilla a slight resinous edge, giving the fragrance a cooked sugar/cotton candy vibe. The orange blossom is there in a trace amount, giving the scent a gentle brightness. It’s so effortlessly beautiful and can be worn in all seasons without being annoying/cloying as vanillas and sweets can usually be in the warmer temperatures. Vanitas is also wonderful for layering and when you want to add some sweetness to another fragrance.

Yes, it’s quite pricey, but for a 100 ml bottle of perfection, I think it’s worth every penny it costs. This will always be a staple in my collection. 100/10 for meeee!

Aspartame vanilla
Vanitas by Profumum is built along the same lines as Montale's Vanille Absolu, Arte Profumi Sucre Noire, Mazzolari Vaniglia, etc., etc., meaning it dries down to a big, old plain synth vanilla (vanillin). Now, the scent of white sugar being stirred into a bowl of hot milk or cake batter is far from unpleasant, especially if you yearn for the simpler comforts of a childhood where your mother baked, her kitchen warm with the aromas of butter, sugar, and (if you're European) those little Dr. Oetker sachets of vanilla sugar. It's a monolith, this accord, but if you like it, it can't be big enough.

However, Vanitas innovates on the model by pairing it with a sharp, latexy myrrh and orange blossom that gives it a quasi burnt (almost singed electrical wire) slant that makes it borderline ugly in the first hour or so. It reminds me of artificially sweetened things like candy or syrups that are so intensely sweet that they can seem intensely bitter at the same time. Call it the aspartame effect. Vanilla lovers can do better.

Sweet vanilla with a spritz of bitter citrus that quickly turns syrupy. Artificial raspberry/cherry/strawberry-ish. Sickly-sweet.

Sweet vanilla and fruit candy, those Cherry Merry Muffin scented dolls. I am sure it's for *someone*, but not for me ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Reminds initially of vanilla caramel with a slightly alcoholic syrup filling. Later, quite interesting tart note joins.

This is nice but not for me. The balmy Myrrh and vanilla mix is warm and comforting, but think Batitto D’ali might be more up my street.

Airy, floral, citrusy vanilla. The myrrh gives it a spun sugar quality at distance, but up close, there’s an initial burst of tart citrus.

This smells much more fruity to me than vanilla, for some reason

Reminds me of the violet shaped candies old women used to keep in their purse. Sweet and medicinal vanilla with a lot of creamy myrrh.
