A Surprisingly Pleasant Scent
It is surprisingly a pleasant scent, which I like quite a lot, it is BOSS Selection from Hugo Boss. Hugo Boss is known for producing some great fragrances, from the pillar original HUGO Man to the flankers, Boss Bottled, The Scent, as well as many more. I think that Selection offers something unique and pleasant to smell, something different from the rest of the colognes in my collection.

BOSS Selection welcomes you with a blast of the lively, green, and leafy accord. It is fresh, wet, like the morning dew on the grass. Soon a sweet, spicy pink peppercorn jumps in, together with a gentle touch of hesperidic mandarin and bittersweet grapefruit, not all too citrus. Thus, the opening results refreshing without too much zesty vibe, it's a quite refined style of citrus, and you can detect a hint of musk and spice and a beautiful warm woody floral accord that lasts quite well on my skin.

At the heart of the fragrance, the traditional and refined fougère theme has been reinterpreted with geranium and cedar leaves, enlightened by star anise and petitgrain, expressing a clear and distinctive masculine character. The abundance of cedar, in leaf and wood forms, creates a slightly camphorous feel that, when married to the musk, creates an almost animalistic edge.

The magnetic woody dry-down of patchouli, vetiver, and facets of cedarwood is rounded out by the softness of heliotrope and modern laundry musky notes creating a smart, authentic signature. Even after the dry down, the top notes of grapefruit and mandarin orange were still in evidence, along with a spicy edge. I would describe the base as mossy, with a dominant musk, and feeble patchouli, which does not overwhelm other notes but adds a bit of darkness, and a slight touch of earthy vetiver.

It's crisp, soft, clean, summery and exotic, BOSS Selection is a light style of scent, making it perfect to wear during the daytime, at the office, or just out and about in the city. It's quite a grown-up style of smell, and you get the greens' instant hints, the leafy accord shine through initially. It will not offend; it's strong enough to be noticed without being overbearing. As for longevity, you can expect to get a right half a day from this one quickly. I prefer to wear it during the Spring days.

This review is based upon a decanter I own and tested on my skin.

Stay well; stay healthy.

Fresh and Soft Spicy Scent with Star Anise note
Awesome Fragrance ! Fresh , Spicy, Clean, Modern, Mild and Unique. It smells so good and very pleasant with reasonable price. This is perfect for rainy days in the spring and fall. It opens up with slightly sweet fresh spicy, citrusy, floral and warm spices notes in the background then dry down is semi sweet musky woody. This review is based on the new reformulation and my bottle is made in Spain. Longevity is Average , I really enjoy it and I like it. The Pink Pepper, Star Anise and Geranium notes are dominant in this perfume. I love Star Anise note and I bought Hugo Boss Selection blind-buy for this reason.

Nice Modest Woody-Greeny-Vetivery
Nice Modest Woody-Greeny-Vetivery. Not a big deal either way -- probably not worth full-price (but then some 'fumes are ^made^ to be sold at °discount°, aren't they?). ^Not^ one of those that get you thinking "might have been a small amount of minlet 'fume-wise; but I've just ^completely^ thrown it away here" - no, ^not^ one of those! (and I've had one-or-two of those!) - it's well clear of ^that^ band, IMO.

Just ... alright ... innit!

Perhaps ^even^ a tad °interessante°! And a decent muskiness score - it's not listed here; but then, it's so °default° an ingredient it often isn't: but there's clearly a fair bit in this.

Actually, this 'fume calls to (my) mind Versace's ~Pour Homme~, and might well be a viable purse-friendlier (at its °discount° price) substitute for it.

Actually, having now blotter-tested this over a couple of hours, I'm beginning to think it's really not bad atall. 'Sbeginning to get rather °soapy°. And I love °soapy°. (Have got the Bond N°9 eponymous one - the one in the gold-coloured bottle & the logo done in ^absences^ of the gold-coloured coating; and ^that^ is one ^soap-bomb^, if ever there were one ... & I ^love^ that 'fume! One of my chief apothecary's personal recomnendations, it was!)

Businessman's Choice par excellence
Boss Selection is a serious, everyday / office and business suitable, elegant male, fruity spicy fresh fragrance.

If you do not know what to wear on serious occasions, this is recommended.
It differs from the rest of the Boss Bottled mush and is very independent.

The fragrance starts with green fruit notes (grapefruit?) and immature mandarin. Fruity tart unsweet.
For me, these notes are kept throughout the scent until they reach the base.
Although cedar, patch and vetiver form the actual basis, the unripe, tart green fruit notes remain.

The Sillage is very discreet. You don't stand out negatively and don't do anything wrong.

Boss Selection reminds me strongly of DKNY Men (2009). DKNY also starts with tart, immature green fruit notes (mandarin) and is followed by cedar, patch and vetiver. Only the DKNY is much more present and long-lasting. It shows its masculinity more clearly to the outside and is by far not so discreet. Therefore not very suitable for business.

I have given DKNY Men 2009 as a fragrance twin, because I see strong parallels in the fragrance pyramid, except for the sillage and durability of the two fragrances they are very similar.

Slick businessman
Greasy guy. Fragment of a quiff. Pinstripe suit. Briefcase. Emotionless facial expression. Empty eyes. Boss Selection Eau de Toilette aura.

The modern businessman who doesn't stand out, who doesn't offend, who is simply there - Boss Selection is made for someone like that. Clearly fresh, but less shower gel, more soap, but not old-school, more modern; the mixture of "green notes" (nice when you don't even want to show off what you were thinking when you mixed it), mandarin, unsweet heliotrope and a little woody cedar make up the main component of the fragrance. This is the equivalent of Clean's "fresh laundry" fragrances for the ladies.
It should be noted that in addition to the impression of freshness, the impression of synthetics is absolutely clear. It is therefore a completely artificial product that has little to do with naturalness. But it fits perfectly into the sterile corporate world. It is simply THE fragrance for the boss's least important companion at a business meeting with another company, who will just be there, say nothing and make no impression whatsoever, except to stand (or sit) there in maximum neutrality and not attract attention. In this respect, this fragrance is a blessing, at least when testing it, as images almost force themselves on the inner eye. Writing about such fragrances is not difficult, they offer enough impressions to deal with.
Ironically, unlike the impression made during testing, this will not leave anyone with one. And it is precisely this commitment, this almost embarrassingly restrained unoffensiveness, that Boss Selection has perfected. You can certainly take credit for that.

Why do I still (only) give it six and a half points? For 2 reasons:
Firstly, the fragrance is "poor" in its own sense (as the opposite of "rich"). It is stripped down, reduced, forbids itself any aha moment. While this is excellent for the intended purpose, it fails completely as an olfactory experience.
Secondly, personal taste always plays a role. If someone gave me Boss Selection as a gift - I would keep it and certainly wear it to the office from time to time, simply because this complete dedication to craftsmanship for the intended use exerts a certain fascination. Olivier Pescheux must have completely ignored any of his own ideas here, any need to add eye-catching accents here and there to the resulting fragrance, and instead stuck strictly to the brief. But that's not what makes me happy. "Simple" fragrances in particular need to be all the more convincing with the little they offer, and Boss Selection simply doesn't do that.
In addition, although I appreciate the synthetic-fresh, maximally clean start, there is a slight change in the course that I dislike somewhat. The freshness fades for the most part (as usual), leaving behind a slightly creamy, spicy note that is indefinable but subtly unpleasant to me.

The sillage is very noticeable, in keeping with the overall fragrance, but never imposes itself and denies itself any loudness. The fragrance lasts about 6 hours in total, the projection begins to diminish after an hour and a half. The price is very fair in this respect. The modern but completely unspectacular bottle with the wonderfully matching grey fragrance oil color is also a success.

Even if Boss Selection is everything but a masterpiece: I appreciate this interesting attempt to create an office fragrance that avoids the typical, widespread spicy freshness feeling and instead presents a maximum reductionist synthetic cleanliness. The balancing act between laundry, soap and shower gel has been a success. The only question is whether such a fragrance is in demand in our individualistic times, when everyone wants to draw attention to themselves in one way or another, or at least leave their very own signature I don't think so.
