green-golden afternoon
Golden afternoon light lies over the hilly landscape, gentle fingers of sunlight brush over the leaves of the vines, which are already slowly turning autumnal colors, and warm the hanging umbels with their plump, almost ripe grapes.
There is already a fine fruity hint in the air: which grape might it be that will later accompany us and our meals as a welcome wine?
I would love to taste some berries fresh from the vine.
The cypresses of the nearby avenue proudly stretch their sharp green spears into the air and exude their spicy, resinous aroma; their shadows are slowly growing longer.
How I like them, these sun-warmed southern trees - including the sprawling pines and the cedars with their trunks shimmering like silk - with their coniferous robes, which are not at all stingy with their aromas at this time of day: they embrace generously and thus share their green life.
From somewhere, a cloud of lavender scent floats through this golden impression, also already of afternoon ripeness: richly spun from flowers, foliage, woods and earth!
I'm still enjoying myself in the shade, surrounded by the fine dampness of moss and a touch of vetiver, but I'm about to enter this wonderful scenery that "Cypress & Grapevine" conjures up on my skin and feel comfortable in it for a while - perhaps until sunset? - feel good.
As you know, I love these clear fragrance creations that are so typical of the brands and Jo Malone and Patricia de Nicolaï; they are always so cool and fleeting, but perhaps that is precisely why they form a welcome time-out or accompaniment for me.
"Cypress & Grapevine" is also expressive, but like many of these creations, not made for hours of contact; I don't expect more.
That's why I affectionately refer to this genre as "scented water"!
My flacon only contains a dregs of this wonderful composition and only came to me by chance.
I have never experienced the usual samples at Jo Malone brand depots: they were tested on the spot, on the skin or on the strip; always accompanied by friendly, knowledgeable conversations.
Now, at the end of July, our Galeries Lafayette store here in Berlin was closed and, after many years (was it 30?) of working together, it was only natural for me to say "Au Revoir" in person, albeit almost at the last moment out of cowardice!
It was very sad to see the much-loved gourmet department in the twilight, with only a few, almost empty shelves, when they were still trying to maintain the illusion of a "normal" sales operation.
The feeling of farewell was spreading.
The perfumery department didn't look quite so lifeless, even if many of the test bottles and cosmetics and make-up displays (all those lovely little things) had already disappeared.
I must have looked pretty sad when the lady from Jo Malone approached me, so we got talking while she picked out a fragrance here and there and let me test it. After all, we had time!
"Cypress & Grapevine" was unfamiliar to me, but I immediately liked the scent that appeared shortly after spraying it on; although I wouldn't have bought it.
It was probably due to the exceptional situation that I was given this tester as a gift - probably before it disappeared into one of the waste/remains containers.
(I can't imagine how many fragrance treasures shared it!)
So it's not just the mood of a golden moment in the south, but also a hint of melancholy, almost sadness, that accompanies me with this summery, spicy freshness and reminds me:
Golden autumn, bright late summer: it was beautiful - merci!
