Quentin Bisch and Akigalawood again
Very good fragrance. Quentin Bisch continues to create formulas where Akigalawood becomes the star of the overall profile. Bois Imperial and Ganymede being the best in show, I can now put Kenzo Homme EDP 2022 as the designer/more reachable alternative to the former 2.

That patchouli note you see there, is Akigalawood. It is much more than just patchouli of course, it is synthesized from patchouli essential oil, but has a rich black pepper facet as well as a clean oud profile - very abstract note that many noses are not even used to it, it's a Givaudan captive, which means it is not widely used and offered only for Givaudan perfumers, which means Akigalawood makes a fragrance smell unique "today". In 10 years it can become public and we can experience it much more to the point that it becomes boring. So this EDP is one to enjoy today while it lasts. And it is very much enjoyable at that. Much more than the Intense EDT I think...

The EDP flanker is quite similar to the Intense EDT original, but differences are clear. The EDT has somewhat lactonic, somewhat green fig notes and a prominent Calone/Cascalone-like seawater-watermelon note. I always assumed it is Calypsone, which is a new generation aquatic ingredient, and safe to say some people perceive it as raw or rotten eggs, freshly washed dish/washer steam - that I also understand how that is perfectly making sense, knowing the seaweedy breeze on a humid day always made me think of raw eggs too. Safe to assume the seawater note in this EDP is also Calypsone, but not as prominent as the EDT.

The EDT also has a strange vibe, which I can only describe with a color - grey with blue shade. The EDP feels more refined, the leather and Akigalawood takes center stage, aquatic weirdness with fig note less prominent, hence the increased similarity to Ganymede and Bois Imperial.

So all in all, I liked the EDP much more than the EDT, it will smell unique to people who haven't smelled any other Akigalawood fragrances (which is, most people). Women who are familiar with Miu Miu - Miu Miu fragrance will definitely pick up the same black peppery patchouli spicyness.

An ode to leather and patchouli
If you like Ombré Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum but find its nuclear sillage nauseating, Kenzo Homme (2022) Eau de Parfum should be the perfect substitute. Quentin Bisch has worked with Sonia Constant on a few projects and likes to use a similar car interior leather accord. In this case, it's toned-down and elegant.

Kenzo Homme EdP only has three accords and might come across as too linear for some. As a fan of intricate perfumery of contrats and transitions, I must say I admire how simple and high quality this scent actually is. Given Quentin's mastery of synthetics, it's easier to wear and more pleasant on the nose than compositions relying on raw materials.

There are no spices, no florals, just a refreshing marine accord at the top. It's pronounced during the first hour, then it fades into the background. It takes 10-15 minutes for aquatic freshness to fully blend with leather. Meanwhile, akigalawood starts coming to life, adding chocolaty and woody nuances of patchouli to the mix.

That's it for the scent profile, don't expect any twists and turns. Yes, it's simple, but also versatile. You can wear it all year around, for any occasion. The marine quality makes it work in summer, while other notes are dense enough to cut through low temperatures. The performance is decent, expect 9-10 hours on skin with moderate to soft projection.

I reach for it when I want to wear a leather perfume to the office, or when I want a break from challenging fragrances. It's a classy and masculine masterpiece from Quentin Bisch. You won't be disappointed if you enjoy leather and patchouli - it's an ode to these notes.

Mature Freshness
Making a fresh summer fragrance that stands out these days is no easy challenge. The typical citrusy, aquatic, maybe a touch aromatic compositions are well-renowned and nothing to be impressed by anymore. And sure, maybe the whole idea of summer fragrances is to stick out less, keep it simpler and to be not as much "in-your-face", to say so. Nonetheless, a touch of sophistication and uniqueness is never left unappreciated among us, fragrance connoisseurs. So how do you blend freshness, simplicity, and sophistication? I think Quentin Bisch has just the answer.

Kenzo Homme (2022) Eau de Parfum has rapidly become one of my favorite hot-weather scents. Its opening is an immediate marine, aquatic freshness blended in stark contrast with a smooth, not too strong, yet still rich-enough leather note - the key ingredient for the fragrance's unique and mature touch. The patchouli adds this sensual touch of woodiness, slight earthiness, and an edge of sweetness. And... that's pretty much it. It's simple, yet complex in richness. The way these notes come together just invoke a particular image in my head - you're in the middle of the ocean, on an old wooden boat, deteriorated, but with a rich history from its countless voyages. Its crew, all passionate for the sea, are adorned in jackets worn of weathered leather, salt and storm. And as you walk along the boat's deck, something hits you - not perfume, not deliberate, but something that at first whiff seems external, extrinsic. An earthy and woody sweetness flows through the air, something hardly ordinary in an endless sight of the sea. What could it be? Where could it come from? “That’s for you to unearth,” says a fellow from the friendly crew. "Now come, captain, for we are ready to make sail. Loose the topsails! Let fall!"

This journey would be plenty prolonged. On my skin, Kenzo Homme (2022) Eau de Parfum held on for a very solid 8-9 hours, which is quite the feat for a predominantly fresh/aquatic scent. Of course, the leather and heavy patchouli are the key characters that contribute to the fragrance's lingering presence, which would travel through the air to other fellow sailors quite aggressively. For the first two hours, the fragrance peaked at around two feet to maybe even slightly more of projection, afterwards settling for about a one, one and a half foot bubble around me that would remain consistent for much of the remaining journey. But around the six-seven hour mark, the moisture would settle on deck, trapping the scent closer to the voyager. Nonetheless, the performance here is more than satisfying and strong for the type.

For occasions outside the rather 'niche' sailing image I've created, Kenzo Homme (2022) Eau de Parfum will hold up with nearly anything you throw at it. High-heat, scorching asphalt, and uncontrollable sweatiness? Check. Moody, rainy spring afternoon? Most definitely, check. Autumn days bringing the transition from summer's heat to winter's freeze? Check. School and/or work? Check. Formal, dressed-up meetings? Check. In my opinion, it's quite a versatile weapon. Definitely not THE MOST versatile, but enough to pull off and fit in about any context. Just do keep in mind it is fairly strong, so I wouldn't pass the 5 spray mark.

As much as I enjoy Kenzo Homme (2022) Eau de Parfum, I know well enough that it won't suit everyone's taste. It's a different take on an aquatic, particularly adding in leather which isn't a go-to note for most fresher options out there. But since I absolutely love leather, it's no wonder that Kenzo Homme (2022) Eau de Parfum has become a favorite. It's manageable leather, however; hardly overpowering. If anything, the patchouli screams the loudest. Nevertheless, this isn't your typical citrus-forward, aquatic, out-of-the-shower-like cleanness composition. This is what you turn towards (and similar blends) when you want a distinct, mature, aquatic freshness that won't have you smelling like lemon juice or piña colada.

I’ve compared this one to the EDT Intense…
… and the EDP won my vote, hands down.

You can definitely tell that they are in the same bloodline, but the EDP has a smoother, darker feeling richness to it. Don’t get me wrong, they both smell VERY similar, but the EDP is done much, much better. The sharp “edge” that EDT intense shouts out is rounded out and softened, but the projection, sillage, and longevity are not affected at all. This is much easier to wear, while maintaining the uniqueness of this line. It is definitely not guilty of being a “main stream designer scent”.

As I said above, performance is GREAT. Projecting 3ft+ in radius while leaving a sillage trail that points directly to the wearer, and lasting 10+ hours. If you want longevity, this one is no slouch.

The issue with this one is going to be that people either love it or hate it. It’s either perfect, or hideous. I haven’t seen a tester anywhere, so I blind bought it. I can definitely understand WHY it is this way. It’s because of its uniqueness. People say they want something different. This is definitely different. Are you READY to experience this uniqueness though?

It’s got a “greener” feeling freshness, but it’s not “green”. Not soapy or blue. It doesn’t go with the “tropical island” advertisements that promote it, either.

I get a fresh, slightly green woodiness, and it get better in the drydown. As it dries, it becomes darker and richer. The drydown is where it shines. It speaks out with confidence, but isn’t self absorbed. If I compare it to its EDT Intense brother, I say that the EDP is the older brother that has already succeeded, but doesn’t tell everyone about his success. You can just “feel” that he is able to do whatever he wishes. He doesn’t need reassurance, he has been there, done that.

Not everyone is going to like him, but that doesn’t matter, because he is going to do what he does, regardless.

Future classic
Quentin Bisch work it's surely there. You will definitely recognise some bits of Ganymede, just because of the akigalawood note. But it's not only that. Definitely a marine scent, but it's not made to fit only summertime. It can easily be worn all year round. Leather gives it a more serious tone. Dark, masculine, not playful at all. It's like the man who sits quietly at the corner of the bar, but everyone at the bar noticed him!very long lasting with big projection.

A fresh, aquatic patchouli with a small dose of leather which adds some nice depth. So simple, and yet so beautiful; a mature freshie.

An aquatic for sure, but with a persistent woody accord reminescent of cedar, coconut and allspice. Better when smelled from a distance.

Very good! Edt intense+Akigalawood. Reminds me of Ganymede. Mineral-leather-patchouli vibe with this fruity-marine accord of the EDT intense

Dark, masculine, alluring, and exotic. Quite an interesting aromatic presence of mineral notes over leather and patchouli.
